View Full Version : 5shoom?
Footy_Gal 10-01-08, 12:58 PM alright, so i was just wondering about this topic
you know, 5shoom, khshoom or err... nose-to-nose greeting thing :os
anyway, generally people i know (not family) find this disgusting and gay
but for me personally, it's the dominating family greeting i know especially when it comes to males
grandparents - ALL the time, i don't even give my grandmas a kiss on the cheek
uncles - all the time
dad - kiss or khsoom, it varies
aunts - 95% of the time i kiss them
mum - never "khashemd" her :p i only kiss her
guy cousins - OBVIOUSLY i don't kiss OR khashem them!
girl cousins - mostly kiss
What's your intake on this whole "Khshoom" thing?
Have you ever?
Do you do it regularly?
---
btw i'm not bedioun, not that it's a bad thing i just wanted to clear it out
Superbia 10-01-08, 01:04 PM Isn't this an Emrati thing? I only observe this happening from my cousins while I'm in UAE, it doesn't occure in my family over here :p (Thank God!) LOL, I find it silly, why can't you just shake hands? I don' like the kissing business either, whether it's men or female all the same! I'd say: Keep your distance!
Footy_Gal 10-01-08, 01:07 PM excuuuuse me it's not an emarati thing
it's a Khaleeji thing, even Qataries khashem
how is it silly?

LOL, mo darani? (How would I know?) It's just that I've noticed quite a lot of Emaratees doing it, anyways I findit silly 'coz I hate this whole touchy business with random people and family too, I wouldn't mind if it's just my mum, not even sisters! :p
I think it's only available in Dahira region.
Shaking hands is the approperiate greeting for men.
Pen_it_Black 10-01-08, 01:52 PM Moaris in new zealand greet each other in the same way (nose to nose)
Personally we don't "5asham" in our family :p but my family from the UAE do, and the women kiss you 7 times on the cheek which gets confusing as you try to keep the number of the kisses in your head so as not to pull away too early and seem rude O_o
sonrisa_mia 10-01-08, 02:02 PM For me personally, this seems like a traditional way of greeting one another however people tend to think of it differently.
I don't think its only something that is done in the UAE, its a 5aleeji thing.
My family dont 5asham but we kiss :boo:
Footy_Gal 10-01-08, 02:08 PM I think it's only available in Dahira region.
i beg to differ, well yea, i'm from '6ahra but people in sharqiya region also have this

appropriate? are you suggesting khshoom is inappropriate?
Moaris in new zealand greet each other in the same way (nose to nose) haha, interesting

Dam3eti 10-01-08, 02:11 PM Sharqeya, dhahira and batinah region also do this. I've noticed it being done at uni, I hate it when girls do it, it looks stupid then.
3 a b d o o s h 10-01-08, 02:13 PM I Khashem. Usually my uncle and friends.
I 5asham some of my friends and couznz (guys) or a hug or a just shake hands..
for girls .. couznz and friends .. we either shake hands or hug if we didnt meet in a while ..
NiGhTFaCe 10-01-08, 02:28 PM We don't do it in my family. But, I do it sometimes with some guys. Whats so wrong about it?!
I hate this whole Oily noses greeting business.
And you know what I hate most is when (some) women kiss you just right near your lips, very close to your lips for 6 or 7 times . I hate it. I hate it.
squinty 10-01-08, 03:19 PM I never ever did it and I saw this when I was in my last year of high school only!
I don't do it, but some friends from Batna or Burainmi do dat n when dey're here, sometimes i go wid da flow. Doesnt hurt, gives a sense of nearness to ppl not in a gay way.
squinty 10-01-08, 04:38 PM ^^
Some people wanted to do that but I don't like it and I don't know why... :p
So they always give me their nose while i turn and give them my cheeks! :hyper:
I just don't like it and don't want to go with the flow. . .
darkone 10-01-08, 05:01 PM I dont like it either ... Its just not something amusing to touch other guys nose and there are like 2 or 3 CM from your lips ! ...
when some one try to greet me that way ... I just give him 6af :P ( blow him a way )
No one in my family do it al7amdullelah ( thank god )
and when it comes to greeting my cousins ( girls ) I don't shake hands or anything ,,, just say hi from a distance !
UmKhalid 10-01-08, 05:02 PM It's mostly between men. And they don't usually do the Kshoom greeting, they shake hands and kiss the cheeks.
I hope Azzy reads this thread :p
Me and a friend were showing her what Kshoom is, and when we told her it's her time to do the Kshoom greeting, she couldn't, everytime I got closer she would scream: I can't do it!! I just can't!!
:XD:

Does she say "6af"? :p
That's very funny!
"C'mon, gimme some NOSE..." :o
UmKhalid 10-01-08, 05:21 PM Ohh, I should teach her that word.
Till now she can say: Chap (Shutup), Ma Betyee (She's not coming) and Maskeena (Poor thing).
never done it, never will.
LooL.. I was talking about this the other night with a Lebanese-Saudi guy in my university.. we were discussing this 5shoom & cheek-kissing greetings and how Americans find it very disgusting & gay when Saudi or Khaleeji people do it here in the USA on the university campus , lol.
BTW I never knew that girls/women also do it...
UmKhalid 10-01-08, 08:06 PM ^ In Oman, only woman in Sharqeya. My friend is from Bedeyya, she says old women always greet with Kshoom there. But younger women now greet with hand shakes and kisses.
Footy_Gal 10-01-08, 08:08 PM ^^ '6ahra as well :p
and yea, old people know no other greeting
it's part of the bedu's culture i don't think it's fair to call it disgusting i mean we should respect them right?
Endure Whisper 10-01-08, 08:42 PM We don't do it in my family, but my husband greets his friends that way, sometimes.
i see my uncles and cousins doing it in uae :)

not just bedu :)
"However, perhaps one of the most revolting sites to foreigners is nose-kissing. Two men would stick their noses together then make kissing sounds with their lips. In certain cases, one would kiss somebody else's nose. Kissing somebody's nose is a sign of respect and a recognition of superiority. Look at the figure below for clarification.

hey...don't look at me that way!......i find it repelling too.....neither myself nor any member of my extended family do it.....
In the oilfield you run into interesting cultural phenomena. One of them I like to call: "the Nose-Kissing problem". Since workers in oil locations are required to wear PPE (Personal Protective Equipment), which include hard-hats, nose-kissing ability is impaired. See the illustration below.

Nose-kissing attempt with hard-hats, introducing the nose-kissing problem
The Nose kissing hard-hat trick!
The Omani Bedouins, being the brilliant problem-solvers they are, came up with a solution to this problem. It's simple! One party would tilt their heads to one side and the other would stand steadily to graciously receive the traditional greeting. Unfotunately, I couldn't convince any of my colleagues to perform the trick on camera!"

The things you can find by googling! :p
For some reason, though, it doesn't seem disgusting to me. Seems like Eskimo kissing...
may tulip 10-01-08, 10:21 PM My family doesnt greet that way but my dad usually does it to us when we are mad/ sad :p< i don't know if that makes sense but it does to me
Bint_Arab 10-01-08, 11:41 PM It's 5ishm not 5shoom lol the later sounds like 5yshoom :XD:
Many people in Oman do that but bedwin most does or have the bedwin nature.
I never tried it as in a formal occasion but i do it with my little brothers lol. Once I saw this girl doing it to her mother or so in uni as they came to take her home for weekends.
Footy_Gal 10-01-08, 11:46 PM 5ishm is what you call your nose
you say 5ishmek or 5shoom to someone it's the verb
otherwise maybe i should go tell my family they've been saying a wrong world for their whole life and probably their grandparents too and i dunno maybe their great great grandparents
people from Sur, ji`laan and bediya do it as well, I always greet my friends who are from al sharqiya or al batinah that way.
I don't see anything wrong with it, its a normal cultural thing
Professor 11-01-08, 01:50 AM we dont do it in my family nor kissing on the cheeks or hands.. i find it inappropriate
for ppl who think its ok to do it...
next time u plan to do 5ishmek to some one ... just imagin this ... u or the other person has a small nose then when ur about to reach the person nose one of u slips, gets pushed or an earthquake occuers ..
it wont look pretty unless it was a 2 girls that were doing it
^^ its a matter of intentions ;)
WoLF DoLL 11-01-08, 04:25 AM I hate it when girls do it. :bored:
5ishm is what you call your nose
Maybe that's what you call YOUR nose!
I don't call my nose anything at all. I don't even talk to my nose. Mostly, I ignore my nose, unless it fills up with junk.
If I called my nose something, it certainly wouldn't be '5ishm'. I mean, come ON! I would't even name a hamster '5ishm'. WHY do you guys INSIST on mixing up number and letters? It's a LANGUAGE, for heaven's sake, not ALGEBRA...
WoLF DoLL 11-01-08, 05:03 AM LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL ^ :XD:
every number resembles an Arabic letter that the English letters don't have, that's why :p

getting a bit dramatic aren't we
and omg i shall drown in humiliation at the thought of my lips accidentally touching my dad's in the event of an earthquake, it can't happen, no, no way, i'd die! it just can't happen, it'd be a totally disastrous nightmare, i mean OMG that's just horribly disgusting
BeachBambi 11-01-08, 11:03 AM The Dhofari bedouins do this greeting although i have only seen men do it. I think it is nice.
Oblivious 11-01-08, 11:08 AM I thought only guys do it?
Well, I'm Iraqi, leave me alone:p
I didnt know that girls do the nose business too !!! !!! LOL
Rossonero 11-01-08, 05:39 PM I thought only guys do it?

Yal bortoqaaalaaa (Orange) :p

5alfanooh 11-01-08, 07:42 PM Bidwins do that,, wherever they are... nothing is called Emarati thingy!!!! its really annoying when someone say it!! but Emaraties are successful in claiming everything even these details :p lol nevermind, in Oman.. its as Dam3eti said,, Dhahra, Sharqia and Northern parts of Batina... I never do it unless the other guy started it then I " a5ashmah " in order not to embarass him..
Don't try to do it to yourself!
