View Full Version : Question to the Catholic members
Pen_it_Black 09-01-08, 08:26 AM I have a friend here who I think is an Angelican Christian. We were having a relegious discussion when I mentioned something about how the nuns cover themselves. My friend said : "Catholic nuns are not Chrisitian as Catholics are not considered Christians"
I was shocked into silence as this is new info to me. I always thought that the different sects like Protestants and Catholics are still considered Christians, just like in Islam Shi3a and Sunni are all muslims. I tried to get an explanation from my friend but he was pretty vague just saying again how Catholics are not Chrisitans. I guess my friend is just being hard headed but I want to know why he said this?
Please shed any light you have on the matter :)
shamsery 09-01-08, 10:13 AM Dear Sister,
Peace, Mercy and Blessing be on you.
( May I call you sister in humanity)
Why you think your friend is an Angelican Christian?
Next, what is your belief?
It is a serious accusation and your friend can explain better.
Please try to have yours friend opinion and that can help well.
You can communicate what ever explanation you received from your friend, that input will help Mr Jeff or other to continue discussion.
Reasons are very important in theological discussion.
"Catholic nuns are not Christian as Catholics are not considered Christians"
The statement shocked me too.
Islam don’t allow any sects but truth is that there are two major sects based on the interpretation of Hadith and other circumstantial evidence.
There is controversy on hadith and it has many reasons.
One major reason is power to run the government( I mean , head of the state, sultan, khalipa or governor).

lol! You'd have to ask her what she meant! :)
We consider ourselves not only Christian, but to be the only ones fully entitled to the word.
We were calling ourselves Christians and being called Christians before Protestants existed. (You know, Protestants only came into existence in the 1500s. There were 1500 years of Christianity before they came to be! :p )
Some evangelical Protestants consider Catholics to have betrayed the essence of Christianity and to be either not Christian or distorted Christians. But this is a complicated and old fight and difficult to understand if you are not one of us and really interested in theology and history.
But most Anglicans don't think like this!
Ask her what she meant and then tell us more! :p Or better yet, get her to join Sabla! I promise I'll be sweet and nice, no matter what she calls me! ;)
Pen_it_Black 09-01-08, 10:23 AM I'm a Muslim and I remember my friend telling me once that he is Anglican Christian.
I think that it was just a case of him being "brainwashed" into believeing this, but I didn't like how he wouldn't elaborate a bit more on the matter as it's the first time I hear of it.
What are the main differences between the different sects of Christianity, and is the "friction" between them getting quite serious?
Of course, I don't know her. She might just be one of those people who don't know much about her religion and was just repeating something she heard without understanding it.
If so, don't push her. She might get embarrassed and angry or hurt. It's always good to be gentle with people.

Hmmm the thing is...he doesn't wanna discuss it :bored:
Yeah it was King Henry the 8th who brought Protestants to life when he couldn't divorce his first wife wasn't it?
Anywhoo seems like just another case of old people's bickering that'll just continue and continue and continue...but I'd love to know more about the differences in the sects if you dont mind :)

I think the friction is actually much, much less these days than ever before. We are much closer and we tend to work together and worship together much more than in former days.
It's hard to explain the difference quickly. But Catholics and Orthodox are strong believers in the Church. They believe that the institution of the Church is Visible and a real society with rulers (bishops). They believe not only in the Bible, but in Tradition passed down that is unwritten. They believe in Sacraments, visible signs God's grace that actually carry power and goodness from God. They have PRIESTS, and ALTARS in their churches where the priest offer SACRIFICE.
Catholics have the Pope as the Supreme authority, the Orthodox just have bishops but no single leader.
Protestants don't have PRIESTS and often no altars. (Or the just call them tables, because they don't offer sacrifice. Protestants believe in the BIBLE ALONE. And each individual believer reads the Bible for himself and decides what it means. The Church exists, but it is not a society with rulers. It is something INVISIBLE. There are MANY varieties of Protestants, they are quite disunited.
Anglicans are sort of halfway between. They are the official church of England and some consider they are Catholic and they believe very similar to Catholics. Others are strong Protestants and Bible Only people. It's not founded on one idea of Christianity, just on England having a national church not under the Pope. So there are many opinions about what Anglicans should believe. In the US, they are called "Episcopalians".
Pen_it_Black 09-01-08, 10:41 AM Cheers Jeff for the explanation. I can tell you am more relaxed after reading your posts coz what my friend said kinda aggravated me for some reason lol :p
No, don't be aggravated! :p
Historically, we Christians have concentrated on making sure we got it 100% right. Those who didn't were regarded as heretics.
And in many ways, we believe that still. Hanging onto Truth is the most important thing.
But we've found ways in the last hundred years to work toward unity without sacrificing Truth.
I am never hurt when some Christians say bad things about the Catholic faith. Or when Muslims say Christians are going to Hell. I much prefer commitment to a truth that you think matters than wishy-washy stuff.
So what your friend said doesn't bother me at all. :)
