A new law is passed stripping everyone of their first names and requiring them to choose another. You decide not to be a revolutionary.

What name will you choose for yourself?

I love the name Celeborn, though Celeborn himself seems a bit weak compared to his high-powered wife! :p

Make sure you pronounce it with a 'k' sound though: it's Keleborn, not Seleborn.

lol @ Jeff...Elendil it is then, 'man' enough :p

Yes, a true-hearted Man...Man in Tolkien's sense of the great race of mortal persons, not the Elder Race.

"Learn now the lore of Living Creatures!
First name the four, the Free Peoples:
Eldest of all, the elf-children;
Dwarf the delver, dark are his houses;
Ent the earthborn, old as mountains;
Man the mortal, master of horses."

I've always loved Men. My son always asks me which of the People I would want to be. I always disappoint him with the boring answer: I want to be of the Men.

But watch out the guys don't call you "Ellen"! :p

BTW, I haven't forgotten about Namarie. I've just gotten busy, Christmas came, and I lost my voice! :p But be patient...

Elvenblade

Jeff, now on to Arabic 1.2:

There are two sets of etymology for "Sophia". In English we know about the one you mention from the Greek word "sophis". Our sister "Sophis Catrina" knows that one too ;)

But in Arabic, it's different. There are two sounds in Arabic like "s"..one is pronounced just the same (the Arabic letter "seen"). But there is a "heavier" one which you will see members here often transliterate as 9 because it looks like the Arabic letter (9aad). Along with the "fa" and "ya" in Arabic it is the root for the word for purity. So "9afiya" in Arabic means pure.

I'm sure she's pure as well as wise ;)

Hmm...OK, sorry for the digression, time to play the game: Actually some people already thought I would change my name but I never have. But if I did, there are a couple of names I have already been called for fun. One is Ali, which I like because it is simple and begins with the "3ain" sound which I think makes it sound strong and emphatic. And also because it's the name of one of the greatest men of Islamic history. I was once re-named "Qasim" by someone, as a kind of version of my own name. It's quite cool, so that would be OK too. Or maybe "Ghabish", just because it's kind of funny!

Really? pure too? but what about Sophie? (9ofi) lol.

Pure and wise, they totally suit my current name. I've always wanted to have a baby girl (HAH!) and name her Sophie!

Are you saying Sophia and Safiya are the same name? I took it that Obli was choosing the name Sophia. Which is Greek for wisdom.

mimosa
09-01-08, 07:46 PM
I'm saying that from an Arabic speaker's point of view, Sophia is a neat anglicisation of 9afiya. And yes, we're agreed that sophis is Greek for wisdom. As in sophomore, sophistry and sophisticate! I don't know why Obli-Wan chose Sophia though.

And Obli, the etymology of "9oofi" was cover by, ironically, Sophis Catrina in Islamic Sabla "Sufism"!

Isn't language wonderful?

Jeff
09-01-08, 07:49 PM
Speaking of wonderful langauge, why is a 9 written for an S? Or is it not an S?

Oblivious

Obli-wan?

Anyways, you're telling me that Sophie means 9oofi in Arabic which has to do with Islam? OK, I'll stick to the sound of the name and not the Arabic meaning :P

It's a nice name.

In Arabic we have to S's. A heavy one which is a (9ad) and a light one which is (seen)

9ad as in...sun?
Seen as in summer.

Clear?

Jeff
09-01-08, 07:54 PM
And yes, we're agreed that sophis is Greek for wisdom.

Not just sophis. Sophia.

'Hagia Sophia' is the (former) name of the (former) Patriarchal basilica in (former) Constantinople. It means 'Holy Wisdom'.

'Philosophy' is from 'philo sophia', 'love of wisdom'.

Hahaha fair enough, I just thought Jeff might be interested! But stop it with the Sufis now, you might confuse him!

Jeff, as explained above, "9" looks like an Arabic letter which is like a heavily pronounced "s". But as there is another letter that is pronounced exactly like an English "s", people like to put 9 to distinguish the two, because otherwise it might mean something completely different.

Also, there are two "t" sounds for instance, and so one is often transliterated as "6" because of the shape again...and there is a heavily aspirated "h" sound, which is shown as "7" sometimes...not to be confused with the throaty-sounding "'7" which is also often "kh" in transliteration. Now if we get on to "dh" and "th" and "d" sounds we could be here all day...and in Urdu about four of them are pronounced as "z"...

I wonder at what point you stopped reading :D

Anyway...names. My younger daugher is called Sophie, it's a nice name. And she's not a Sufi or an Arab or a Greek, sorry for the digression. ;)

No, I'm a sucker for an interesting long post! :p I read all the way through. I forgot to finish the other post because my philological side got excited by the Sophia/Safiya question...

But thanks for explaining twice! :p

Now will you please tell me what that 9 stands for? Is it some kind of 's'? ;)
