Dakar rally off due to safety fears (http://english.aljazeera.net/NR/exeres/911DC83F-F07B-4763-866F-050E6268ECFB.htm)

Eight of the 15 stages were to have been held in Mauritania.

It was the first time in the race's 30-year history that it has failed to go ahead.

The Amaury Sport Organisation (ASO) said on Friday that there had been "direct threats against the race issued by terrorist groups".

In a statement posted on the internet and dated December 29, Algeria-based al-Qaeda in the Islamic Mahgreb criticised the government in Nouakchott for "securing for the infidels a suitable climate for the 'rally'".Look for more of this. Soft targets that are popular sporting events.

What's more:

Mauritania -- all unnoticed -- brought off an election to get rid of an unpopular military government.

A TWO STAGE election, planned and run completely by Mauritanians, that was free and fair, and that everyone agreed to abide by and did.

They deserve congratulations: But self-government is one thing these Taliban type cannot stand at any price.

I think it is the government of G.W. Bush that is to blame 4 this kind of interference in 'another' country's internal affairs. Why shd Algerian-based-AlQaeda intimidate a sovereign state ?

Such rallies brings the badly needed hard currency. Is - is somebody twisting the 'arm of Nouakchott' or - or the freedom of the Maori`tanians is being put to test, eih ?

I sus`suspect that notorious phantom hand is at play, and is about time 'Africa Commandi' is established w/o further ado ;

So, i'd deduce from your comments, that the same value of blame 4 dear old al-Qaeda takes the same level of ....:mmhmm: so the answer is simple, that simply bo`bot`both USA Administration - of the 21st century - graduated from the same school as 'Al-Qaedas' !

Soon the boys down in Jubou are goin to complain of boredom and demand to be shifted to Niger or near that part of the 'globe' so 2 sbeak i shd say .

I see that a new year has not changed Slowth's favourite blame-game

i.e. People are being killed in Kenya as a direct result of Kenya gaining independance from Britian in 1963........and also as a result of Kenya's earlier Colonial 'Masters' - i.e. the Germans, Omanis and Portuguese

You seem to fail to recognise the difference between speculation and fact.

It is a fact that they have been threatened by terrorist groups. It is not speculation.

Speculation is your speciality. ;)
