I came across this odd article a blog I read and thought to discuss it

Malaysian row over word for 'God' (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/asia-pacific/7163391.stm)

A church and Christian newspaper in Malaysia are suing the government after it decreed that the word "Allah" can only be used by Muslims.
In the Malay language "Allah" is used to mean any god, and Christians say they have used the term for centuries.

I really can’t understand based on what these people are creating this, and in fact really annoyed me how Islam is used by those leader to serve their political purpose !

How far they can go with using Islam that way !

BBC and Evangelical Church.
Is this not the Church Mr Bush belogs.

This part is good; the church said the translation of the bible in which the word Allah appears has been used by Christians since the earliest days of the church.

Though the word was Alah , Alah,

The word "Allah" was used by Christian Arabs ages before Islam. This is very stupid!

Allah is God and there is one God after all, doesn't matter what you call Him.

I do believe that Allah is God, and what they call others as "god" is just a spoiled copy from the very truth which is "GOD ALLAH". It the interpretation of unguided minds seeking the truth.

Now if some use it to bring some support or to cease power to a party or a group, then they are just no better than the rest. So I think it is just how life goes on, some will try to make use of 'everything' even the name of God!

Sad.

Elohim El, Elah, Alah
Collected from different source and typed from my printed copy.
In the Bible, God is very often referred to as ‘Elohim’ in the Hebrew language. The ‘im’ in the ending is a plural of honour and God is referred to as ‘El’ or ‘Elah’ in the English Bible with commentary, edited by reverend C. I. Scofield. ‘Elah’ is alternatively spelled as ‘Alah’. The difference in spelling is only of a single ‘L’. Muslims spell Allah as ‘Allah’ while the Reverend has spelled it as Alah and they pronounce it as ‘Elah’. Muslims pronounce it as Allah. Hebrew and Arabic are sister languages therefore we say it should be pronounced as ‘Allah’ and not as ‘Elah’.

Why ?

Why not Elah ?

Other than the fact that you think you are superior ?

If they are sister languages, how do you make the call that the Arabic version is the one to choose ?

Please answer, we are waiting.

Add to it the word "Eli" which means "My God" this is what Christ referred to God on the cross, according to the gospels. It is pronounced the same way as the arabic version of "My God"
Again, Calling God "Allah" is Arabic version and nobody has to follow the Arabic Version of Calling God :) Simply because Islam isn't for Arabs only, unless you think otherwise.
Also, Have you ever heard an Arab referring to God as "Allahomma"? I'm sure you did, thats the same Hebrew word of "Elohim"
so yes, Hebrew Arabic and Aramaic are all similar, we can't impose any Arabic word on any other language, and I'm sure we both agree on this

Isn't it funny?

I remember the Catholic bishop who suggested we should all call God "Allah". There was a great hue and cry against the suggestion.

Now the Malaysians say the opposite and there is a great hue and cry against them.

The world is a strange place! :p

It's even stranger since we catholic maltese call God .. Alla. And even though we don't put an h at the end, it is pronounced the exact same way.

Gesu, iben Alla.
