View Full Version : Mercedes Cars
Miss Unique 01-01-08, 04:42 PM Hi all,
I’m a new member in English Sabla.
I’ve some queries about Mercedes Cars, I would like to know the difference between the cars models. For example, I don’t know what is the difference between a C class & S class. The only thing which I’ve notices is that whenever the number increases, the bigger the engine. Please help as I intend to buy a new car. :help:
Thanx
UnorthodoX 01-01-08, 04:58 PM welcome aboard
the C class is the basic level for mercedes, the E class is the mid-level and the S class is their top-of-the-line for the sedan.
A Mercedes is the worst car you can buy on the planet. Stay away.

C-Class isn't the basic, as there falls the B-Class.
ti3gib, please save us, this thread isn't about it being good or not.

+1 on that :p
-----------------------------------------------
- Car gets higher in class as the letter goes from A to Z
example: C-class is lower than S-Class
- Exception of G, GL class (SUV cars)
- first 2 numbers represent the engine size (in most cases, they lately messed up the process)
Example: S350 has an engine of size 3.5 Litre
those are very general info
^^Correct, apparently C63 AMG has a 6.2 L engine!

are you sure about that ?! :p .. so is the V-Class the highest ?!!

lol....more like the best cars on the planet.
I have two.

I mean basic in terms of sedan! is B-class sedan? if so then i'm wrong
CompulsiveWaves 02-01-08, 11:37 AM In Mercedes whenever the letter is bigger that means the car is bigger then it depends on the numbers the E200 dosnt have the same features as the E240 the E240 has more features
Haroundb 02-01-08, 12:20 PM E-Class is the best. IT is not so damn expensive to maintain like the S class (which is meant for presidents of countries and Super-Businessmen). C-Class is more of a small version of the E-Class, with a more compact size and smaller engine.
There are some who complained about the S-Class, and others who complained about the C-Class, but very few who complained about the E-Class. In other words E-Class is Risk-Free.
Don't buy a car that you like, buy a car that suits you.
Benz cars are very expensive and they need lots of care thought they are very tough. I myself won't buy a Benz unless I have 100,000 cash money in my bank account and a nice shady place to park it in. Don't get me wrong, Benz is not a car, it is a style of life!
Lightning2 02-01-08, 03:01 PM well.....welcome to ES :).....and good choice.....Benz is the best.....
any way it depends on what type do u like.....sedan,,,,compact ort full size.......cope ....or SUV ...:)......numbers represent capacity of the engine.. :)
Rossonero 03-01-08, 01:54 AM As everyone explained. B class is the smallest and S-Class is the most luxurious. It is the best car manufacturer in the automobile industry, full stop.
I thought A-class is the smallest... or they don't produce A-class Mercedes anymore... ?
netlover 03-01-08, 06:06 AM Mercedes Benz vehicles are way over priced simply because of the name. I'd also recommend you stay away (unless you've got loads of cash).
Go for BMW if your looking for class or Lexus if you want reliablity.
AMARANT 03-01-08, 08:17 AM I thought A-class is the smallest... or they don't produce A-class Mercedes anymore... ?
yah they stopped the A-class and started the B-class instead ...

totally agree ..
Muscati 03-01-08, 04:32 PM Mercedes has a very big range of cars which causes a lot of confusion to people who don't know the range very well. A quick guide:
First there are the basics which most people have no problem with:
C-Class: basically Mercedes' competitor to the BMW 3-series
E-Class: Executive sedans like BMW's 5-series
S-Class: the big uber luxury class like the BMW 7-series.
Then it gets confusing
A and B class: these two look really similar and are sometimes hard to tell apart. They are basically mini cars which compete with Japanese hatchbacks. BMW later made the 1-series to compete with them.
CLK - the two door coupe that's based on the C class.
CL - the bigger two door coupe based on the S class
CLS - the 4 door coupe which invented a new niche which will soon be copied by BMW, VW, Porsche and Aston Martin.
SLK - the small convertible roadster
SL - the larger convertible roadster
SLR- Mercedes' supercar.
G - the original MB 4X4 which has been in production since the early 80's and still looks the same.
ML - MB's SUV
GL - A bigger ML
And soon to come the GLK, which is basically a smaller ML.
R - A cross between a minivan and a station wagon. I kinda like these. If I were rich I'd buy one for the house.
V - for once a class where the letter actually tells you what it is: van.
There are some who complained about the S-Class, and others who complained about the C-Class, but very few who complained about the E-Class. In other words E-Class is Risk-Free.
There's no such thing as a risk-free car, particularly a Mercedes. Their dealer in Oman is known for selling the cars at prices higher than the other dealers in the gulf while offering lower options. Their garage also has a very bad reputation for service.
I thought A-class is the smallest... or they don't produce A-class Mercedes anymore... ?
They still produce the A-class which is available in either 3 door or 5 door, and then there's the B-class which is slightly bigger and available only as a 5-door. In Oman they only bring the B-class.
Haroundb 03-01-08, 06:06 PM Thanks Muscati that was very informative! Thumps up...
Lightning2 04-01-08, 12:38 AM Their garage also has a very bad reputation for srvice
who said so ? we had and still have more than a mercdes and we never had any problem with them.......am talking about at least 20 years of satisfaction ... mabey there are incidents but you cant make a general statment of that...because the same goes to junabi ,zubair and bahwan,,,,,but still i cant make general statment !!
netlover 04-01-08, 06:07 AM Again, BMW BMW BMW (or Lexus). The only Mercedes I would consider buying is the new C-Class.
Lightning2 04-01-08, 02:46 PM ^^ based on what?,.,,,,, u people like making general statments !!!!.....
netlover 05-01-08, 04:31 AM It's not statements its a fact. Mercedes Benz are way over-priced.
Take this for example: for the price of a V6 Mercedes Benz S-Class , you get a V8 BMW 7-Series (Same quality, more powerful engine). So why should I spend thousands more just for a badge.
Besides, MB's COMAND system is just a rip-off the iDrive ;)
Lightning2 05-01-08, 10:22 AM ^^ these are statments .....not fact......MB cars are not cheap but that doesnt mean they are very over priced !!.....ok the dealer here is as muscati said selling them over prices with less options but in general prices of MB cars are ok compared with options and quality you get. about the comand system i dont agree with you.....normaly the market leaders in any industry are the ones who are shaping the future of it.....same goes to cars.......gear boxes, nav systems ,saftey......if one of them implemented it before the others it deosnt mean ..the others have copied (ok japanese n korean do copy:) ).....
netlover 05-01-08, 10:49 AM .....ok the dealer here is as muscati said selling them over prices with less options but in general prices of MB cars are ok .
Humm.. isnt this thread about a person in Oman who wants to buy a MB.
NiGhTFaCe 05-01-08, 03:31 PM Again! This this thread is to inquiry about the different categories of Mercedes-Benz models/engines. Its not about comparing it to other brands. Lets keep the topic under whats meant to be.
Lightning2 05-01-08, 03:54 PM well......ur right but i was answering your post....
any way zawawi have a good offer on E280 with panoramic roof...:)
netlover 05-01-08, 08:34 PM Any idea on the price?
Lightning2 05-01-08, 10:43 PM 18k............
UnKnown 06-01-08, 01:11 AM well......ur right but i was answering your post....

I really like the E280 with the bigger rims (18" I think!) and dual exhaust, and now it's with a panoramic roof for 18k! I think thats a reasonable price for a Mercedes nowadays. The down side is that it comes with a 2.8L engine, though I read somewhere that it's actually a 3.0 V6!
AMARANT 06-01-08, 01:22 AM ^^^ it is a 3.0 V6, but Merc like to twist names :p
wow 18K is really good! why the offer? new E-class is coming soon??
UnKnown 06-01-08, 01:23 AM Ok, it's the AVANTGARDE (http://www.mb-me.com/eclass/) version.
UnKnown 06-01-08, 01:24 AM ^^^ it is a 3.0 V6, but Merc like to twist names :p
wow 18K is really good! why the offer? new E-class is coming soon??
But besides the "E280" badge, theres one that says "2.8" !??!
netlover 06-01-08, 01:56 AM ^ Whats so new about that E-Class? Looks the same ! :S
AMARANT 06-01-08, 02:22 AM But besides the "E280" badge, theres one that says "2.8" !??!
no the badge on the right side says 3.0
the E240 has a 2.6 engine :bored:
UnKnown 06-01-08, 02:37 AM no the badge on the right side says 3.0
the E340 has a 2.6 engine :bored:
Yes, I think your right. I mixed up, my bad.
netlover 06-01-08, 05:24 AM Why are their classifications so confusing.
Why cant they be more civilised like others? :p
Lightning2 06-01-08, 10:02 AM ^^ they r very civilised !!! simple..... when u sell a product which has a long history....you have to consider many values....MB had 280 since long......but beside the 280...the 3.0 explains the engine capacity.....whats the problem with that.....same with 500, it has a bi name here in the gulf at least ...so insted of calling it as S550 (as in usa 4 example) the call it 500 but put 5.5 ....and it feels right !!
AMARANT 06-01-08, 09:43 PM ^^^ that's still confusing.
i'd rather they use the real capacity, or round it to the nearest 5...
i really really cant trust the "first wo numbers" rule anymore, cuz it's not right in many cases!
C230 once had a 1.8 engine, and once 2.4,,,,,,,,, what the? :os
netlover 06-01-08, 11:40 PM Yeah I still find it confusing too.
Out of all manufacturers, I would say Lexus have the easiest classifications:
LS 460 - 4.6 V8
ES 300 - 3.0 V6
ES 330 - 3.3 V6
IS 300 - 3.0 V6
LX 570 - 5.7 V8 ..etc.
AMARANT 07-01-08, 12:52 AM ^^ and infiniti as well, very precise
but i dont blame BMW or Merc for choosing different names (IF they are better)
like i'd rather own a 750Li not a 748Li
LS460, LX570, G37, QX56 names arent that cool :bored:
netlover 07-01-08, 06:20 AM ^ lol. It's still less confusing though XD
Spanarr 07-01-08, 12:09 PM Go for the E280. It's sexy.
And about the style number or whatever, if you know the engine size or whatever it is that you guys are discussing, why does it matter? :D Let them be, in the end it's the car itself that matters, not what's written on the back of it!
AMARANT 08-01-08, 07:02 PM ^^^ it does matter cuz some people buy the car and they dont even know the engine size :bored:
and people compare engines sizes when they search for cars :bored:
I think the E series Mercedes look great. But having had one for a rental car once, I have to say it was a massive disappointment. It looked absolutely stunning in shiny black. But although it all worked OK, it was a really dull and uninspiring driving experience. The front end was really vague and soft, handling terribly when you took faster corners. There is no feedback from the front to the driver at all, and for a front wheel drive car, that's awful. I found the interior a bit of a let down too. Pity.
I hope the new one is better, but if you're looking at a used recent model E series Mercedes, don't. There are better cars for your money. I hate to say it, but their old rivals BMW make a much sharper drive and a nicer interior too in the same price range. So do Audi. They are both better choices for a German mid-range saloon. Or come down a brand, and get a loaded VW Passat, everyone loves them.
If you want the best value in the mid range saloon market, then get a full option Ford Mondeo: The Dollar's worth peanuts so it's really cheap, you get loads of extras for the same money, and performance and handling wise, it is head and shoulders above the Mercedes. Car of the Year in too many places to mention.
But let me take a wild guess that the Ford badge is not classy enough for you (fair enough, it looks pretty ordinary). If you love the Mercedes, knock yourself out, but I'm telling you the E240 is only good for taking old ladies shopping.
One more wild card recommendation: Try a Volvo, they are solid as a rock, the performance and styling has really come on lately, it will be different to everyone else, and they are good value too.
netlover 09-01-08, 09:57 PM If you want the best value in the mid range saloon market, then get a full option Ford Mondeo: The Dollar's worth peanuts so it's really cheap, you get loads of extras for the same money, and performance and handling wise, it is head and shoulders above the Mercedes. If Ford Mondeo is in the list, then I would recommend Mercury Milan instead of it. Its a really good car and looks so un-American :D
