Well very true what you guys are saying . The English programe as in what the teach in school its B**l Sh** . All over the 9 or 10 years that you are taking english in school you just feel that you are not going anywhere.

To be honest while i was in School ... I hardly attended any english classes. One reason is becuase I got damen Board from it as all what the teach its just tooo easy for me .. as i did learn english as the real english while I was away .. . I guess the Ministry og High Education should really very much change the System .. or else just don't give english at all . Its either making it better or just nothing at all.

cheers

Hi Em6anash,

You picked up a good subject here, I agree with you that the english programe is week in the goverment schools, but I think the new system of studying will improve it. As you might already know that english lesone will be also given to the class 1 and so on and this off course not like the previous system. Moreover, we will be having a good educated teachers (mostly Omanies) and we hope they will take it seriously.

Yes Victor, u r correct. They are going to start the new system soon and English will be taught at all levels in school. At least this shows that they are trying to improve, but we still have to wait and see the outcome. They may start to teach them from the beginning, but its the STANDARD that needs to be improved! Its the Quality not the Quantity that counts.... http://www.omania.net/evip/ubb/wink.gif

they teach english on the last year in Salalah? how would they ever learn the language in one year?

u guys are right, the system here is bad and should be changed. i'v heard about this new system that they are trying to introduce in schools, teaching english from the first grade or so. but the problem doesn't lay there obly, students who would like to learn the language better should use it more often.

i have many Omani friends who would like to talk to me in english just to keep their language on the use. and it helped them.

even reading and participating here in the Sablah does the same thing.

cheers,

I suggest that, all of you should not take this seriously. Try as much as you can to have some of this language just to keep you alive in this life. What I want to say that you should always consitrate on Arabic language (the mother) which most of us is doing bad on it. We should read alot and we should try our best to dig on the incyclopedias and find out what is correct to be said and what is wrong. We should take English as a way to pass, put not a reason to stay in this life.

WE MUST BE PROUD ON ARABIC, (THE LANGUAGE OF QURAAN)

When I was in Jaber Bin Zeid, I used to correct my English teacher..a Balouchi. My English was much better than his, and yet he was considered a teacher. Also, the overall quality is poor these days because of the schools taking Egyptian teachers even if they are not qualified.

Oman has a long way to go with education standards. Private schools are doing it right. They invest in good teachers, lebanese, Jordanain not Sudanese and Egyptians.

This message is in no way a racist one, so please don't start sending me stupid replies.

We are an Arabic country why do we need English. Most people Outside Muscat do not bother about English. It seems like English is the first language in Oman.

hi all
be it arab, indian or chinese, every country needs to have english in their schools. not because english is better than any other language, NO. it is not. it is however, the UNIVERSAL language. it is wise to know it if we want our country to improve. i agree with em6anash, we should do something, the question is how.
keep thinking.

The English course given in our school is not very effecient but belive it or not that Omanis and Omani students are among the best international studens who deal with English so well.
I met too many students from gulf area and their English are not as good as ours.
Belive me, I don't think that there is a serious defect in the course more than the time allocated for it. Do you belive that 50 minutes a day is enoght to teach a language. I think this problem is out of the Ministry of Education hands. Oman is one of the few Arab countries which start giving English in the 4th grade.
But therte is a very important point, that learning English needs a learner to spend time in self-access study more than in the class, especially with vocabulary. It also needs very frequent practice which we miss with our students.

The ministry are resposible of this .. they should prepare better English courses for their students.. or maybe they should change the higher educatin language standard to Arabic..
If we start learning English from grade ONE we'll be much better than starting learning it at the fourth grade.. kids learn faster than anybody else..
