So the former minimum wage of 80 RO has been doubled to 160 RO, this law is valid only for those whom have been hired after 1st march 2007
yasirb51 24-05-07, 03:38 AM thats why we only hire maids from sri lanka or indenesia lately ! :)
hmm this is interesting..
this means less n less filipinos in oman, which is good
we stopped hiring them since the mid 90's anyways, they have too much attitude and cause too many problems.
interesting..we have a few Filipino maids, but they're all here for so many years now..everyone is hiring Indonesian maids nowadays anyway..
amo_l_oman 24-05-07, 12:30 PM official minimum wage
Who follows official wages here when is about housemaids ?
Who follows official wages here when is about housemaids ?
I do, at least :)
The minimum wage has been 80 RO for the last 3 decades but many were being paid lesser than that, around 70 RO
But now when it's been doubled to 120 RO, you can't expect to pay them 80-90 RO
Perhaps Oman won't be a famous destination for those maids anymore

Thug4Life 24-05-07, 01:56 PM With or without labour card ?
Why
better, more towards our culture and religion, cheaper than philipino now!,
we need Omani maids
How about this; WE NEED NO MAIDS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I hope that the wages increase more
Arabian Princess 24-05-07, 02:11 PM Maids themselves dont like this rule .. it limit thier job oppertunity .. like said above, no one can afford to pay 120 for a maid when they can pay 50 for another one!
Rumor:
i just heared from Saudi ppl that there are a new distination for maids which have been linked to Russia and the goverment of KSA and Russia was in talk for 3 years to reach on some conditions which as i heared have approved....i don't know how true is it....
yasirb51 24-05-07, 03:09 PM i agree with getting omani maids ! :)
Valentina 24-05-07, 03:10 PM How about this; WE NEED NO MAIDS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I hope that the wages increase more
actually i agree with you, about not needing maids, and maybe just having part time helpers and why not!
But as i was reading the article yesterday, and it said 160 rial omani would be like the minimum wage to be paid to a philipino maid, if i am not mistaken, isn't some omanis earny less that not? like isn't the minimum wages 150 or something?
Valentina 24-05-07, 03:14 PM i agree with getting omani maids ! :)
i dont mean to be offending anyone or insulting anyone in anyway, but Omani have an attitude towards some jobs and maids would be one of them, they would be way to proud and stuck up to even consider the job:mmhmm:

plus that nothing will be privacy in that house , the maid won't consider in staying in the house, anything happen to someone of the maid relative will ask for holiday and many more...
for me personally i won't consider in getting any Omani maids.

.. it's either u or the maid in the house!! :bomb:

You mean they don't put up with 20 hour days and getting fondled on the job?
Yeah, best to get rid of them......
fatak
we need Omani maids
The day you see an Omani maid waking up at 6:00Am making breakfast for the family......this will be the day Muscat is 3 meter deep in snow.......
I hate to use the word lazy......so omani girls are too pampered......to actually work as maids........
They have a tough time just being wives........

Reading this thread, I'm just trying hard to imagine me having a full time maid.
People here don't have live-in maids, except maybe the president. :hyper:
People who have huge houses hire maids on an hourly basis like once a week for 3 or 4 hours, to help with polishing the silverware, glass and cleaning the windows. But the wife works along side the maid.
Come to think of it, if I had a maid, what would I do with my day? It would be really boring.
I'd like to see some of those maids join Sabla and tell us what they think! :p
That would be an interesting thread! "Post here and tell and pretend you are a maid in Oman. Don't write in your own voice. Write in the voice of a maid in Oman. And tell us whatever comes into your mind. But try to make it real..."
Do you think people would go for it? I wish they would, but I kinda think it would be one of those heavy stones: you drop it into Sabla and it goes WHOOOOOOSH! right to the bottom, never to be seen again.
..
.. it's either u or the maid in the house!! :bomb:
:XD: that's true!!
There will come a time where we will pay more 4 other nationalites too.

hmm that is true, but thats happening now with jobs everywhere in Oman!

Mind that here you pay 100 rials per month [200 euros] or 1.5 per hour and that's it
Don't know in Malta but in Italy depending on the area they pay 10-15 euros per hour plus the contributes to their pension schemes, a fortune to cut it short
Also my mum when she was young, hired one for big jobs only or couple of times a week and did everything by herself or with me and sister help
Most of our maids were Filipino and we were happier with them than with the ones from other nationalities. Maybe that it why I prefer Filipino Maids. So I hope in the future, I would have enough money to afford them. Insh Allah!
yasirb51 24-05-07, 09:44 PM lolz yeh at least with filipinos you can talk n stuff ! :p

Here a maid would charge Lm2 an hour. That's like a bit less than 5 Euros. The maltese are alot like the italians. Very fussy on their housework. Most women I know will refuse outside help because it can't be as good as their own. :p
This is how far maltese women go to make sure their windows are clean. :hyper:

My father does, he also pays them bonus's once a maid completes a year, (five riyal yearly increment, end of service benefits and leave allowances.
I find philipino maids far much better than other nationalities.

Dark Project 26-05-07, 06:40 PM That would stop modern slavery !! But why only Philipino's ? Other countries should do the same ...
Well in Hong Kong you will see thousands of Philipino house maids spending their weekends in the parks shopping mall sitting outside since the houses are small and the Honkonese wants a bit of freedom in the house too .. what a site to see this time I will take a photograph and share it in here ..
yasirb51 26-05-07, 07:02 PM i dont think it can ne considered "slavery" ! :os
i mean we offer them a home n all and we pay them and in return they do the house work ! :os
its just like a waitress that lives with you and do many other stuff ! :p
i mean i dont think its slavery ! :)
Black Lolly 26-05-07, 08:16 PM I always think, I'd rather die than be a maid.. they're really sad and misreable..
But our maids are happy fillipinos.. dont know why..
One of them just suddenly became like the happiest person ever.. and then we firgured out that's because she's in love and about to marry.. Aww.
Now she jokes around..and is just excited about life! wow..
They make me feel bad.. cuz I know if I was in their shoes.. I wouldn't be able to take life..
Muscati 27-05-07, 11:53 PM We told our maid today that we're not renewing her contract which expires next month. At 75 rials a month she was barely adequate. She was horrible at doing the house work but she was really good with our son so we tolerated her. But at RO. 160 a month, her quality of work would be unacceptable. We're going to try to make do with part time helpers till we find a solution and rely on my mother for looking after our son in the mornings, although it's not fair to her either since it would mean she'd have to stop most of her own personal day to day activities and dedicate herself to looking after him.
My wife and I both work full time so we can't be without a maid. It's not like Oman has day care facilities. We found a play school for him but they only open till 1 and close for the summer. It's easy for people to say "let's make do without maids" but how else can you manage unless one of us makes enough to allow the other to be dedicated to the house full time?
If all countries look after their own citizens like how the Philippines does and dictate a wage increase for their maids then maybe we'd have better solutions for how to manage households where both the husband and wife work. Until then, and so long as Oman has no feasible options for child care, we will continue to be beholden to foreign maids.
And by the way, Fatak, it would be stupid to mistreat a maid because she's alone with your kids every day from 7 till 3. You treat her bad and she'll end up taking it out on your kids.

This is a very long article from the New York Times Magazine last month. It's one of the best I've read and focuses entirely on one Filipino family in which most of the family members have traveled abroad for jobs over the past 30 years. Trust me, it's worth the read.

Interesting...
Would opening a child day care centre be feasable in Oman?
I wish I had an extra house with a garden here.. I'd make it into a day care centre.. supposed to be taking the course for it next september. Here, it won't be a maid's job, but the job of someone qualified to work with kids, just like a teacher.

It's a good idea .. and better than using a maid .. I would rather leave my child with my Mom ... I can't trust a maid with my children .. Not all maids treat the children in a bad way .. These DAY CARE Centres are Better for the child to learn and to be treat it in right way ..
Til Now I know only one girl who can't cook :XD:
I don't like the idea of leaving kids with our mums. First of all, our mums have done their child rearing years and in their 'old' age should be relaxing and enjoying their freedom at last.
Plus, grandparents have a tendency to spoil their grandkids. And once that starts happening, it will be so tough to keep your kid within your household rules.
Like, if you say no sweets before finishing your dinner, or No standing on the chair, the child will pipe up with "But grandma gives/lets me!"
They can't understand how the rules keep changing. Kids need stability and the changing rules only create confusion and insecurity in a young child.
(Been there - done that. It's very hard to make a 2 or 3 year old understand why something that was ok until a few minutes ago, isn't anymore)
LosT_SouL 28-05-07, 01:16 AM I know wut you mean .. You can control them either ways ..
1) I know they are in safe hands :) (MY MOM) ..
2) If you ask her to do wut you want with your children, then she will respect your opinion ..
3) sweet before the dinner no harm compared with dead children and chopped in the freezer :o
4) Learn discipline like ME :D
5) Don't get attached to the maid as their 2nd mother ..
yasirb51 28-05-07, 01:17 AM ^ i totally agree with the point that grandparents spoil the children ! :)

Am I seeing a golden business opportunity here........Day care centers?
I remember seeing some really bad videos of these maids in the USA beating up little babies.....they were caught on video and busted......
It's amazing that the care of one's children can be risked to some caregivers who are not totally trusted......
The few stories I heard about mistreated maids was nothing compared to the majority of good situations.....
But still i think as the labor force changes over the years more Omanis will have to regroup family members and pitch in to help with the kids and give the working moms a break......
PS......I am available as driver from Sept.....I think my wife is kicking me out then.....

Our mums may have been tough on US, and may have disciplined US, but they change COMPLETELY when they are the grandparents. Trust me on this one. :D
Do you know what's worse than a grandmother looking after your kids on a daily basis? Their great grandmother. :hyper:
Seriously, this is what happened in my case. My mum does spoil them a little bit, but my grandma (their great grandmother) spoils them MUCH more. And since my mother works too, it was my grandmother who offered to look after my daughter when I went back to work 3 years ago... and no matter how many times I tell her to, for example, make her pick her toys up when she's ready... she never made her do it. She's do it herself. Because "meskeena" she's just a little 'baby'. (She was 2.)
Till today, it is hell trying to get Layla to put her things away when she's done. And that is just one example of many.
Thug4Life 01-06-07, 10:41 PM did they cancel the doubling ? and returned it to the past salary limits???

You can get Oman maids if we Omanis first we need to learn How treat them humanly..
we do treat Foreigners well that good... the only problem if we happend to have omanis as maid then our atitude will change and we will statrt seeing our fellow omanis as second class and at a very low.. that's where I am worried

No, not everyone can easily find a job these days. Not without a high GPA and/or wasta. There are so many university graduates who are unemployed and just sitting at home.

I don't think they will accept that. They will prefer to work in any grocery or any other company but not serving omani people as them :)

Well with a degree in 12th century Art appreciation or a Masters in Pet Nutrition.......you still need skills........
I use to know a guy with a PHD in Biology from Berkeley in the San Francisco area who worked as a bartender......evn after many offers to teach.....he just got sick of it.....
