I always wanted to know what that is!
The appendix, afaik, is a part of the intestine that is used in other 'vegeterian' animals. Like cows, they have one (or similar to it) and they use it do digest cellulose.
Most scientists think it is a shrunken "left over" part of an intestine present in our ancestors. Some dispute that it might have a part in the immune system but some people are born without it.

My condolences. My father in law almost died last October. He got an appendix attack and the docs that operated on him to remove it never sewed the intestine back properly. They used stitches that shouldn't be used on diabetic people and the contents of his bowel started seeping out of the internal stitch's site into his body cavities.
They only noticed a few days after when he got a high fever and the dirt itself started seeping from the flesh incision. They rushed him to another hospital for an emergency operation that saved his life. He needed blood transfusions for about 4 weeks. And they had to flush his system out. That was a minor op each time, requiring full sedation.
We didn't think he'd make it. But thank God, he did. All because of an idiot doctor. Appendix attacks are not rare and the first op should have been a routine thing. Done thousands of times before.

I had my appendix removed in 1994. The appendicitis itself wasn't so bad. That pain was tolerable. However the recuperation from the operation was much longer than expected. When they came to operate they found that some part for the endoscope and they ended up doing the regular old fashioned surgery which for some reason I had to stay in hospital 5 days to recover from.

It is a vestigial organ with no clear cut function or benefit in humans, though different theories exist about it's role but those are overweighed by the fact that people do absolutely fine after the appendix has been removed
It does have a digestive function in animals
Did our ancestors benefit from the appendix just as they did with the wisdom tooth, maybe

Rupture of the appendix leads to peritonitis, that's acute inflammation of the linings of the abdominal cavity & it's organs
The affected patient develops fever with nausea/vomiting, abdominal swelling & rigidity, without early intervention sepsis can develop which can lead to a state of shock & death
Appendicitis is an inflammation of the appendix, which occurs usually because of an obstruction due to an impaction of faeces which leads to bacterial accumulation and infection.
The patient would complain of slight fever, nausea and vomiting. Pain in the centre of the abdomen that moves to the right side later. Severity of these symptoms varies from one patient to the other.
Treatment would be by removing the inflammed appendix because you want to prevent complications of it's rupture like Hitman already said. It's a simple surgery of which most patients recover from very quickly.

Remember having a talk about it in Biology. It has no use what-so-ever in our Digestive System and Scientist still dont know why it exists in our body.
..but you never know..(sub7an allah)
