What are the reasons behind the traffic crisis on the roads of Muscat?

I heared (wal 3uhda 3ala al rawi) there was a truck that fell down and blocked the road ..

Dear AP, I was referring to the situation in general, but thanks for that update regarding the truck story

The way people drive is the first reason, plus for a high way if we can call it, three lanes are not enough!

no trains or busses ment for citizen use, where it stopes in many stations all around muscat caused the increase of cars as the level of people increases by time. Few years to come, walking will be faster and easier to reach the targeted place. Because it will take ages to reach plus you won't find parking for your car.

i think it's all because roundabouts plus some drivers they make up the traffic by driving slowly in a road of 120 km and as stated up from NF...

~ roads construction (from 120km/h to 60)
~ Trucks (at the 3rd, 2nd sometimes 1st line)
~ policemen on round abouts (at morning at the airport round about)
~ Accidents on the other side road , ppl slow down/stop to watch (often happening now)

.. too many cars!! .. less alternative ways!!

Accident happens, people to curious to know what is happening, they slow down and take a look..then go..

one main road with Million cars On it of ALL kinds (trucks and saloons!)

There is only one main road in Oman which will people eventually use to all directions whatsoever other alternative roads they take.
Trucks ignoring the traffic rules and riding on main roads at peak times.
People slowing down out of curiosity when accidents happen.
Having only three lanes on the only highway in Muscat.

the places where I face traffic is at alkhuwair suq area, the aitport roundabout (which is due to the construction there) bowshar lulu roundabout & alkhoud suq area, it sucks really! numbers of cars are increasing rapidly! we really need a way of transportation other than cars, maybe if Al maha big buses become more active it will better!

Com'on people something optimistic .. we are coming back home ..

of the cars increases .. Nowadays , 3 or more cars in one house ..

Besides, the trucks are out on the road any time of the day! They should restrict the trucks to limited hours on the roads!

1- One main highway road. (At least one extra highway road should relief pressure)

2- No public transportation alternatives. (Buses, Trams, Trains, planes ...etc.)

3- Car for every member in the house. (Husband, wife daughters & sons, each his own car! To go to a party 4 cars from the same family)

4- Watching accidents. (Mainly for entertainment not for curiosity. Curiosity generates awareness, entertainment is the result sense no one really learns from others.)

5- No planing when driving. (Pass by the same road 3 times coming and going, instead of stopping on each point in sequence.

6- Too many two way roads. Two way roads saves money only 10:00pm to 07:00am between that just waste of money.

7- No ethics driving. (one man can delay a big line to drop his wife, a woman drives slowly to locate a shop insted of parking and then walking around, entering the lane with force by crossing the other free lane)

8- Frequent switching lanes. (more brake applied more slowing in speed)

9- Concentration of areas of focus (ministries, shopping malls...etc. are all in specific places. Thought other places are just totally empty and ignored. Commercial areas are in very limited locations)

10- Speed driving, (More accidents more watching).

11- Wrongly Saving money, (Taking the shorter buzy roads instead of longer free ones. Thought to the short minded people it seems a save of the money but in fact it is just totally the opposite.)

12- Dignity. (Not using bicycles, motorcycles and other lighter transportation equipments. every person drives a 4 seated car only one of them is occupied by the driver).

13- Using mobile phones while driving. (More mistakes, more missing the road, more slow driving, more accidents...etc.)

14- Easy loans. (One side it makes it easy to own a car but from the other it encourages people to buy more cars)

there are alot of private companys or gov with huge number of employees that are located in the same area that start or finish work at the same time ..

Not enough roundabouts not enough traffic lights ... narrow roads...

ok what are the soloution on place?

- 1 highway is being constructed to be parallel to the current one
- ministries are going to move to area behind ma3radh.. at least I know two ministries will move there (education and higher education)

What needs to be done:
- improve public transport
- people should be more educated when they are in the road .. more exams before giving out licience
- people try to get into one car, instead of two neighbours going to the same place .. take one car

Most countries started to remove roundabouts..and we are adding more :yuk:

Traffic is also caused (mostly) during an accident, the two drivers who have been involved will fight over who will call the cops..lol

This will be reduced with a new system which will allow insurance companies to take care of minor accidents .. no need to call cops and once the accident happens you have to take the car out of the way or otherwised you could be fined.

Exactly, they are making short term plans. Which will result in a waste of money in the future.

This will be implemented starting 1st of June .. it was in the newspaper already .. there is a campaigne that is introducing this new system.

Such policy is already there.. Trucks are not supposed to drive on main roads at the following times:

From 6:30am to 8:30am
From 2:00pm to 3:30pm

But they still drive on main roads. Sometimes, mostly in the morning, policemen stop those trucks and ask them to park their cars until it's 8:30am
