I am a sickle cell trait carrier.

- If you are a carrier of an inherited blood disorder, how did you come to find out about it?
My parents had me checked at an early age.

- How much knowledge do you have about these inherited disorders?
I know alot about sickle cell disease.

- What is your source of information when it comes to inherited blood disorders?
To begin with, I live in a family where so many of us suffer from sickle cell trait/disease. I grew up knowing about it, and then at some point of my life, started reading about it on the Internet.

- Do you think there is enough awareness in the community about these conditions?
Not at all!

- How important do you think it is to screen for inherited disorders prior to marriage?
Very important. It is essential to know what you're getting yourself into whether or not you decide to go for the marriage.

I'm a beta thalassemia carrier (Thalassemia minor).. and I've come to find out about it less than a year ago.. It was quite un-expected as I never knew it ran in the family.. after I got my results I asked my siblings to get tested and half of them turned out to be carriers too! To be honest I've always been oblivious to inherited blood disorders as I never thought I'd have to do anything with it until I actually found out I'm a carrier, ever since I've been educating myself on the topic... I do believe there isn't much awareness on the issue despite the fact that the prevelance is high in our country..
