View Full Version : How can I lose weight?
anyone can give me good suggestions on how to loose my excess weight?
I am now 119 kg, my height is 179 cm, I suffer from high blood pressure.
I tried dieting, walking, exercising but its useless cause I have a good appetite for food anyone knows of a natural recipe to reduce my appetite?
I know you'll say it's useless, but I'll pray for you! :p
I know being overweight and having health problems can make you miserable...
I don't have a simple solution for you, I'm afraid.
God bless you and I hope you succeed in feeling better.

I lost weight without changing my diet, I eat whatever I like. Just stick to an excersize program, you can't just go one day and skip the next 3 days and go again for like an hour. Try to go 5 days a week for ATLEAST an hour, it will work for sure.
Thanks Jeff God bless you too, I don't actually feel miserable but I feel like heavy and lazy and this gives me a bit of a problem especially when I perform my prayers.

I do. Tried and tested.
But you have to stick to it and make it a way of life.
We call it "the Sinners Diet"..
You have to omit all kinds of pasta and rice for the first 4 weeks. Take only two portions of carbohydrates: Bread, potatoe or cereal.
You can eat almost any fruit, veg or meats as much as you want as long as it is not fried or full of sugar.
You have to have 3 fruits a day and switch to skimmed milk, of which you are allowed one glass a day. So you can have a yoghurt OR split the milk allowance into what you add to coffee/tea/cereal. Stay off cheese.
So the ideal menu for your day would be:
Plate of breakfast cereal with one glass of skimmed milk added to it.
Mid-morning have a fruit or two.
Lunch, have a tuna salad
Mid afternoon have a sandwich.
Late afternoon is the ideal time to eat a good meal. Have any meat, preferable lean meat or fish and pile up those veggies to really fill you up.
In the evening stay off all kinds of carbs. You can chop some carrot sticks to pick while watching tv..
Throughout the day, you must drink at least 2 ltrs of water. And you are allowed a wafer chocolate such as a kitkat. this is your "sin".
Rule out pizza and anything fried unless you don't take your daily sweet allowance and save your "sins" for a pizza once a fortnight..
You will lose up to 2 kgs a week. Especially if you combine it to 30 minutes of excersise a day.
Good luck and don't give up. It's never too late to start again.

1- Your BMI is more than 37 which makes you an obese individual
2- Obviously you are on a positive energy balance. To make it simple for you:
Weight loss = Reduced energy intake + Increased energy expenditure
3- You must stick to weight reduction diet & join a health club for regular exercise & also have lifestyle modifications
4- Antiobesity drugs are available & you might want to see your Dr to discuss that further
5- Regarding your high blood pressure, it is a well known fact that obesity is a risk factor for developing hypertension, but you should undergo thorough investigations to be diagnosed as a case of primary or secondary hypertension
5- Genes do play a role & FaHaD is the best to explain that part for you

I tried before exercising in the gym and I lost some weight but after few months I gained it back and this is actually my problem I gain weight faster than I lose it this kind of thing puts me off from going to gyms and lose money for nothing.

yes, because you shouldn't "crash diet".. you should change your whole lifestyle and eating habits..
You need to make your body crave exercise. It is hard as first, I mean no one likes climbing mountains with 20 sacks of potatoes on his back.. but the more you do it, the less potatoes you will be carrying..
You can't exercise to fix a problem and then stop. You have to keep doing it all your life. It might sound daunting, but once you start to shed the weight and work a routine, you will not feel good unless you exert that energy everyday.
It's great for stress too.
*gets on exercise machine*
I should take my own advice more often
Drink liters of normal water (not cold or from the fridge) , mainly 4 glasses first thing in the morning before anything
i lost almost 7k in 2 weeks and i wasn't regular

$weety, ur skinny..lol how did you lose 7 Kg's..
sallam cloud,
The best of what I can advice you is to practice swimming in the pool, as it really exercise the whole body by the movement of every single muscle in your body, plus it works well with your heart beat, strengthen your lungs and minimizing your blood pressure.
Not every diet is suitable to every one, but for sure there must be one that will really work well with your body, you can either ask your nutritionist or try to set a diet list by your own.
Say for example list down what you like and what you dislike, what the junk are and what are healthy.
Try to set your self a target of experiencing healthy meals for 3 days per week and then say after a whole month try to move to 5 days per week then you will find your self taking the diet for 7 days in the week and you body will get use to the changes and adopt it well.
Walking is a good thing to do but again it does not work on every one, plus it only works on your bottom part of the body and not much on your top part.
Set your self to have at least 5 items of vegetables [they must be green] and say 3 of fruits per day, and spread them evenly and you are meant to have them instead of chocolates or packets of chips/crisps.
Cut down the fizzy drinks and get to drink lots of pure water and when you get bored add some lemon or a hint of any fresh fruit as a flavour.
Have lots of salad and soup, try to mix different types of vegetables and try to create your own type, and don’t stick to those typical recipes because you will get bored of them. Every time you want to prepare soup chose 3 or 4 different items and add them together, as a mix of vegetables, pulses, rice or wheat or oat, lentils …etc
Have lots of fibre as they are meant to fill you even if you have a small portion, though to some people it might work the opposite for example like me :)
I shall say that some years ago, I used to eat a lot and crave on lots of junk food which result of me to gain weight to upto 11.7stones = 79kg in a height of 154cm, which was really bad and used to wear size 16.
When I started to give my self a good push to practice swimming continuously and having better meals and having more of what I mentioned above, I lost weight from 11.7 stones to 8.8stones = 57kg in 6 months and I wore size 10, believe or not.
WOW a big achievement by me, alhamdullilah, and that was with not help from any one, I just set my goal to lose weight and I decided to list my diet and spread my time to apply my own rules on me of time to exercise and time to have healthy meals.
One more hint, spread your meals to upto 5 a day, but in small and mixed portions such as a meal of vegetable, meat, rice or brown bread or vegetable, pasta and fish…etc
You know what check my thread food as Medicine and you will find lots of information about which food to have and that will work well for you, inshallah.
Don't forget to set your goals and build a well structure to go around them to reach them.
Fengy thanks a lot for your "sinners diet" I will try it from tomorrow inshallah, but is it ok if make my main meal at lunch time around 2.30pm ?
the good thing about your diet I can still eat meat but not fried, plenty of veg and fruits, no sugar at all . I will sin once a week and take a kit Kat or a Pizza every two weeks.
HITMAN thanks a lot for your advice but as I said before I don't like going to health clubs I will try to walk half an hour daily and follow fengy's diet.

Early January 2004, I was close to 78 kg, I managed to drop to 65 kg by April. I followed a diet program that required no exercise or anything. It is a 4-week program, before that date I never jogged or exercised, then I started jogging, the first time I jogged was 700 meters and then I went home! It was so depressing, but gradually I made it one day for more than 10 Km. Now, I am maintaining a weight near 70 kg but in shape, no belly and nothing like before by watching what I eat and jogging 3-4 miles twice a week.
The program prescribes certain breakfast, lunch and dinner meals for 28 days. You don’t need to exercise and you can drink coffee without sugar or even diet coke. You will feel it even more burdening than fasting by the way, but in the fourth week your stomach or biological watch will develop a new eating schedule and quantities, there it is your job to maintain that, also try to adopt afterwards better dietary habits, like avoiding overeating just before going to bed, eat well at breakfast and less at dinner, avoiding high cholesterol and fat food, for example.
Also try to educate yourself on nutrition and metabolism, with the frequent readings, your knowledge and awareness of the whole thing will increase and you will find yourself more systematic and selective when it comes to putting something in your stomach.
Look at this http://www.thecaloriecounter.com/ and get to know the meaning of the food you eat to your weight increase.
I can bring you the program if interested, it is just that it is a PDF copy of some pages taken from a book, in Arabic and not so neat due to the frequent photocopying. I also need sometime to look for it in my files.
I hope this will help!
sweety thanks for the advice 4 glasses of water early in the morning consider it done.
lebbies4life yes I do like lemon do you have a lemon diet?
Solafa thanks for the advice and I will read your thread food as medicine.
HITMAN thanks a lot for your advice but as I said before I don't like going to health clubs I will try to walk half an hour daily and follow fengy's diet.
you can have a kitkat every day, or have none and save your 'sins' for the weekend ..
One kitkat = 10 sins. A pizza = 140 sins but an apple = 2 sins. (for example) .. So you can omit the kitkat and have a few extra fruits as "sins".
The earlier you have your full meal the better. It gives you time to burn it. When we eat carbs in the evening, our body stores it instead of burns it.
Be careful of slimming pills. Many of them are diuretics. They can dehydrate you and cause problems with the renal system (kidneys). Better than pills, just make sure you eat something every 2-3 hours. If you don't, your body will go onto "starvation mode" and start to store all the food you eat, instead of burn it. (like camels lol)
As for exercise, cardiovascular exercise is the best. Do something that gets your heart pumping hard for 30 minutes. Start off doing 10 minutes the first time, then 15, then 20 etc.. so you don't give up.
So if you go walking, start jogging and keep it up for 5 or 10 minutes the first time. Take an ipod with you and keep yourself distracted..
I have an exercise machine at home.. and I stick it in front of the tv or pc, plug the headphones into some music and just exercise without thinking I am doing it. (I hate exercising but I crave it just the same because I am used to it).
Just stay off them starchy carbs and excess oils. They are the culprits!
Most importantly make this a new lifestyle. Like you are 'converting' to a new religion :D One of a better choice of foods, better choice of eating times and better choice of activity.
sweety thanks for the advice 4 glasses of water early in the morning consider it done.lool it sounds easy but it is kinda hard to get used to 1)drink normal tap water and 2) 4 glasses kinda makes you feel :yuk:....but it is very effective...good luck and keep sharing the results ;)
thanks again Fengy I was thinking to get an exercise machine in the house, what sort of machine do you recommend?

I have this, because I have probs with my knees..

It is one of those machines that burns the most calories.. plus, I prefer it to a treadmill because the of the jolts I get in my knees when I jogg.
when u're hungry, eat.. but don't eat until u're full! thats the best advice I can give.. (I am 53 kgz :help: )
Lover2007 thanks for the advice and I don't want to bother you to look for that diet file you have, I think you are an athletic if you can jog for 4 miles keep the good work up and thanks once again.
Braiki thanks for your advice, you are only 53kg!!! that means you are under weight especially if your height is more than 153cm!!my advice to you keep your stomach always full.

my only advice is:
have a BIG breakfast
skip lunch
n have a light dinner
worked with me YEARS AGO n still is ! :)
oh n try not to have anything 2-3 hours before going to bed
Sallam,
Every time when I am back in Oman I find my self losing weight quicker than in here, though I don’t follow any diet scheme and I don’t exercise at all. But I am sure that our life style at our home plays a big role.
Our typical routine at our house is that:
1. We don’t actually have full breakfast, it will either be a glass of carrot juice, a glass of grapefruit, a cup of tea or sometime with toast, corn flakes, fried egg with toast and cup of tea, or nothing at all.
2. Lunch is a must and our main meals are light and they are either boiled rice with some light curry with [meat, fish or chicken] and vegetables or home made bread [chapatti, routi, mandazai…etc] with grilled [chicken or fish] or dried cooked meat [ which means with no curry just a slight sauces] and in all days we must have big bowl of salads.
3. Dinner is not even in the list, unless if we have guests or visitors coming and they are staying over then we will prepare some light dinner. Otherwise our dinner time food is a big try of mixed fruits and we all sit around it with our parents and we chat off while having the fruits and that will be 2 hours before going to bed.
4. carrots and cucumbers are our main snacks if we ever felt or craved for a bite. Though we still consume lots of chocolates, biscuits and crisps but there is always a control over how much we eat them.
==================
So you can use the above as another method of dieting but don’t forget to exercise.

ooooo Same here im dieting too ( trying) ... i get tooo many cravings though... chocolate... ice cream... NUTELLA!!!... I think my mom makes my favorite food on purpose :bored: looool... Just this sunnday i stared dieting.. the next morning i took a salad for lunch and by the end of the day i was starving....Now...today... wednesday i just weighed myself and i lost 4 pounds!!! deeeeear god looool... i dunno how i lasted 4 days of dieting... but omg i cant even beleive thiss.. loool.. still more to go..
As for you clouds here's some tips;
- walk instead of taking the car (if its close by)
- eat smaller portions
- even do some old fashioned sit-ups...
- spent more time doing physical activities
:) :) :)
my only advice is:
have a BIG breakfast
skip lunch
n have a light dinner
worked with me YEARS AGO n still is ! :)
oh n try not to have anything 2-3 hours before going to bed
But if you do that, the body goes into a "store all the food" programme, because you leave a long time between one meal and another and the body starts to think you might starve.

but im not sure of ANYthing say but i know it worked with me ! :)
I have attended the last international congress of obesity. Trust me, there are many many programs being presented. Many showed good success rate but all of them did have side effects such as : kidney problems, re-gaining weight after stopping the program.
Your case is a serious one and you must consult a dietitian first. Try using low carb. low fat and high protein diet ( shows good results but has some drawbacks) . There are some fitness shops around Oman which offer such diet and programs.
better consult a doctor regarding cardiovascular risk assessment. Lipid profile is very important. Clinics may measure your HDL, LDL cholesterol but that is not enough. Must find out the level of small dense LDL because the presence of this type is much much more risky than just saying you LDL cholesterol is high.
I don't know if there is any clinic in Oman which measures this small dense LDL.
Having a very high BMI and hypertension makes you a candidate gastric bypass surgery. (http://www.bariatricinstituteky.com/candidate.html)

thanks Fahad for the advice, but I am really affraid of surgeries and I have heard about serious side effects of such surgeries some leads to death.
I already got a treadmill machine in the house and started a diet.
thanks once again.

I agree with chaty
As psychology thoughts do play a big role in some ones mind and it has a big affect on the person.
Sallam,
One thing i wanted to mention is, How is your body structure?
I mean is it a heavy bone structure or is it more of fat structure?
Because you might be losing few inchs of your body size but you might see the weight/scale is the same. You can only notice the loose when you keep on trying your old cloth and you see some free space within that used to be occupied.
Fahad: What is the position of an obese person if they were a bone structure/ heavy bone structure?

My body structure is fatty and sloppy structure not the bony one you mentioned is that any help?

Sallam,
Well to my understanding that your case it an easy one, because mainly its all about fat patchs every where in your body, and by exercising and working out your body these patchs will get reduced and then you will start to build some muscles, for sure not in a short time but once your body is reaching a certain level of fat lose then it tries to use the muscles to tighten them and there where the build ups starts to show. :)
So you really need to start a complete diet scheme with lots of excerise, and i really recommend swimming for you, if you can swim in the sea then its even better, as the sea water is a healthy water, plus don't forget that the salt works well as a bouncing wall, which requires you to work extra in the water and that will burn more of your fat. :)
[LOL, i talk as if i am a doctor :rn:, but i am NOT, its just out of a general knowledge]
Another thing, depression can be the big cause of food craving, so try to have a relaxed and rested mind and free your self from depressing issues and stress.
Try my advice for 3 months and see how you will feel.

Physical fitness
It has been estimated by scientists that laughing 100 times equals the same physical exertion as a 10 minute workout on a rowing machine or 15 minutes on a stationary exercise bike. Laughing works out the diaphragm, abdominal, respiratory, facial, leg, and back muscles. Cool Quiz 2006
However, William Fry, a pioneer on laughter research, in an article for WebMd was said to indicate that it “took ten minutes on a rowing machine for his heart rate to reach the level it would after just one minute of hearty laughter.” WebMD 2006

If one wants to lose weight one should drink plenty of water, as well as eat healthy and get exercise.
Often thirst is confused for hunger. So people consume excess calories by eating because they think they are hungry, when their body just wanted hydration.

The question is, how can I gain weight?
The question is, how can I gain weight?
Sallam,
LOL at this question but the answer is easy, eat alot of healthy food too but don't crave on junk for it will ruin your health. :)
Plus you don't have to rush up to gain weight now, for once you are married then you are automatically or entitled to gain weight :p [ as typical Omani]:XD:
But a seriouse talk here, i guess you are fast in burning your fat and your metabolism are fast too. So you need to eat certain type of food that are slow to be diegested and can stay in your stomach for long such as fibre :)
Fahad, you can confrim what i said, and if i am wrong then i apologise :inno:
Thanks Solafa I will try swimming in the sea as swimming is my favorite exercise, just I will wait for the weather to improve as water now is pretty cold.
Jihad4truth, thanks drinking plenty of water is also very good for pushing down unwanted fats and poisons in the body.

i understand ... i made an offer to help not to be critisised about where we are all u have to say is that u couldnt thats all ... good luck :)
Right, fitness, my favourite topic!
The idea of losing weight rotates around the idea of having a healthy lifestyle and preventing all the diseases that are associated with obesity. Your goal should be to transform your lifestyle into a healthier one. You should aim for progress rather than perfection.
So how do we change our habits? It's not by crash dieting, and starving ourselves, the key is to gradually change our bad eating habits into healthy ones, and introducing exercise as a regular habit.
Healthy diet
This mainly means that you choose healthy options, natural products, and to try and cut down on sugary and high carb meals.
Don't starve yourself, because if you start to skip meal, your metabolism decreaes, and your body goes into a starvation mode, thus holding tightly to the fat and it won't be easy to get rid of it.
You should have 3 main meals throughout the day, with 3 snacks. A protein rich diet is what you should aim for. Carbs is important, so don't eliminate it, but go for healthy options, such as fruits, wholemeal bread, etc..
Chicken is a good source for protein, so is egg white. Plenty of vegetables is always recommended.
Always have a free day, such as friday for example, where you can eat the things you like, that way, when you suddenly crave for chocolates for example, you know you have a free day coming up, so you can hold back. Never omit things completely, because if you do, you'll end up craving for them and you'll end up binging.
There's a program called weight watchers, where they give you a program, or you count the points which you're allowed to have during a day. It worked for a lot of people. There's another program called 'body for life' which seemed to work for others too. They have a good program for both dieting and exercise and it goes through a period of 12 weeks.
here's a link, www.bodyforlife.com
Now exercise.
If you're someone who has been inactive for a while, you want to start slow and easy. You need to do both cardio and weight training.
When it comes to cardio, do it at least 3-4 times per week, choose something that you like doing. I am crazy about indoor cycling, and I got certified in that too. You always start with your own pace, and gradually build up your fitness level and endurance.
Now new research shows the importance of target heart rate training. Calculate your maximum heart rate, 220-age, and then in order to burn more fat, you need to stay within the aerobic zone, as in the zone where oxygen is being used. The best thing is to stay within 75% of your max. heart rate, because during this zone, you're burning mostly the fat rather than the carb, if you go to anaerobic respiration, your body starts to use up carbs, rather than the fat, you still burn a lot of calories, and you do burn the fat, but not as much as the carbs. A lot of the machines do have the heart rate monitor, so it's a good idea to start using them, if you want to learn more about this, please feel free to ask, I'm very interested in these topics, and I've just been to a workshop regarding heart rate training.
Now, do eat before exercise. Don't have something sugary though, because your body will produce insulin, which will prevent using the fat as a fuel, have something that will release carbs slowly.
Okay, this is a quick summary, I hope you find it useful. And trust me, once you get into exercising, it becomes like an addiction, makes you feel good about yourself, and puts you in a good mood because of the 'happy hormones'. :)
^^^thank you Dr.N for this valuable information you given us it's really very useful and helping, I like the bit about Friday the day I can eat anything I like it's similar to what Fengy described in her sinner's diet.
I am keen now to follow your advice and get myself an indoor exercise bike with a heart rate function in it, but I didn't get it what is the relation of our heart beat and losing weight!
thanx once again Dr.N
The idea of our heart beat and losing weight is all to do with biochemistry.
When you start exercising, you use oxygen as the fuel to generate energy. Now there's a certain limit to how far this mechanism can go on before it's all working at max. speed, how fast that happens depends on your fitness level. Now here's where your heart rate comes in, when you get to 85% if your max. heart rate, that's when your body shifts from aerobic respiration, that is, when oxygen is used up, to anaerobic respiration, that's when lactic acid is being produced, and that gives you the soreness you feel after exercise.
Research has shown that when you stay within 75-85% of your max heart rate, you somehow continue to stay in the aerobic zone, and your body uses the stored fat to provide fuel for the whole respiration process, but once you go beyond 85%, you start to enter the anaerobic zone, and your body starts to use up the carbs rather than the fat, and when you're trying to lose weigh, you want to burn the fat.
You can always buy a heart rate monitor which you can wear while doing your cardio, and I can try and find out some articles and post links here for you to read about them.
The cycling I'm addicted to is on the indoor spinning bikes, with the resistance and all.
If you like swimming, that's good, because you work your whole body and the water takes of the weight making it easier.
And don't forget weight training. It burns the fat, and replaces is with muscle which tones you up and gives you a better shape.
Go with inch loss rather than weight loss.
Oh and you're very welcome. :) Like I said, I'm into fitness, so I enjoy doing this!
^^ I agree with the whole exercise thing. I was watching the news the other night about a worldwide study conducted by the University of California saying that diet, especially fad diets have a high failure rate something like 80% and most of the time when people stop dieting they gain their original weight back plus some more.
The best way is to exercise and eat right. It is slower but better for you.
So far I have managed to lose 6kg in 2 months and keep it off and all I did was become a little more active. Now I have to work eating less junk food :)
Sorry Solafa for being late to reply,
Bone mass is important too. This is why don't only rely on BMI.
studies showed , among them an Omani study, that waist circumference gives better indication for cardiovascular risk compared to BMI.
