Is it okay to follow your common sense when a couple of Islam Scholars give you different answers to your doubts?!

I mean, once, I asked a quesion, and this question passed on to a couple of well known shyookh (Islamic scholars) in Oman, and I got quite different answers from all! At the end I just did what made more sense to me...

Some people said that was wrong and I had to confirm on which was right!! I just got lost and confused when I got too many replies so I decided to take the one which made more sense to me..

How wrong can that be?!

I don't think its wrong at all seeing that most scholars say their teachings based on older scholars and these older scholars follow the teachings of even older scholars and so on. Also I do remember God saying that every work done by people is based on their intentions.. if you truly are a good, moderate and fair muslim then common sense will help you very much.. but then again people are different and thus each person has their own common sense..and logic is sadly different but in the end, I do what I think is right as long as I'm not hurting myself or anyone else in anyway.

It was said that when scholars disagree it is then mercy for Muslims.
Because then they may follow the path that whichever scholar chose and they would not be considered sinning.
I think this is the case here! If you get too many different replies, follow the one that suits you best. But I don't think you may make up your own as you did :os!

I heard from a credible source that as a muslim, there should be one or two scholars you always listen to. However, these scholars can't be from any sect, they should be ones who follow your sect. As in if you are abadhi, you should choose a scholar who practices ibadhiya also.

Once you decide that you want to follow this particular scholar because he is the one who makes the most sense to you in his reasonings, then you've to follow what he says in every instance, even if you don't like his answers on various issues. You can't be choosing a different sheikh every day just because you liked his answer on a particular issue and it suits you circumstances. Once you're committed to one scholar (or two), then you should listen to him all the way.

However, if one scholar says the answer is A for example, while the other one says the answer is B, then you can follow either one as long as the scholars belong to the sect that you to belong to.

I remember the saying "inna fi ikhtilafi el `olama`e rahma" which means "the discrepancy in the scholar's opinon is a mercy" I don't know where that quote comes from, but I guess it depends on the situation that we're talking about, in simple ones, you can do what you see is right as long as u're sure that it doesn't cross the limits..
It's always better get the opinions from the scholars and then pick the one that suits you!

I do have the same problem sometimes, I to do the following:

-Looking at the argument the Sheikh is making and see how much sense it makes.
-I might also follow my personal desires and myself might insight me to take the easiest, then I would ask myself what if I were in a situation that would make it easier to take another opinion, just to check that I am not being led by my earthly desires.
-Also try to follow the most common opinion, as the Ummah of Mohammed is in general agrees on the truth.

Sheikh Yusuf Qaradawi said once:
علقها في رقبة عالم تسلم
Leave it to the reposnsiblity of a Scholar, you will then be safe!
But of course you don't follow any scholar, you first be honest to your self and judgement

But there shouldn't be sects in the first place since they divide up the muslims over small matters..

But we do have sects nevertheless and the way we interpret some issues differ.

First of all I think it's not right to ask and get the opinion of many Scholars just to find an easy excuse and get away from the right ruling 'hukm'. What matters here is the strength of the evidences the Scholar is presenting to support his answer. Also the muslim should follow a trusted scholar who has very knowledable in the filed of sharea'a not just anyone who issues fatwas based on weak knowledge.

I believe the "discrepancy in the scholar's opinon is a mercy" is mostely in the matters of 'fiqh' and not the 'aqeeda' if there is a strong evidence from the Quran or sunnah then there shouldn't be any difference in the Scholars opinion about it. This can occur when the evidence is being understood differently by different Scholars.

^^ exactly, I was talking about the fiqh not the aqeeda! Endure whisper didn't specify the category of her question, but since "common sense" is involved then it's most likely a fiqh question :D
