MUSCAT — The Sultanate of Oman represented by the Muscat Municipality will celebrate the Arab Town Day today, together with its sisterly Arab countries.
The Muscat Municipality’s celebrating the day stems from its keenness to share this important event with its sisterly Arab municipalities and town authorities, and to commemorate the day in which the Arab towns organisation was established 39 years ago, based on initiative by the Kuwait Municipality and the participation of 27 Arab towns.
The Arab Town Day celebrations this year is held under the motto ‘Municipal joint action among towns’, is a coordination, cooperation and exchange of expertise.
Abdul Aziz bin Yousuf Al Adasani, secretary-general of the Arab Towns Organisation gave a speech, saying that the Arab towns were able to balance its current economic social and environmental needs with future requirements.
“When the organisation was established, only 27 member towns were there, today it includes more than 420 towns,” Adasani said.
During the seventies, the Arab Town Organisation started with two institutions, the first being the Arab Institute for Town Development in Riyadh. It was concerned with Arab town. The second one was the scientific and documentary institution which is specialised in training researches and consultations. The Arab Town Development Fund deals with financing projects, member towns at the organisation through mid-term loans with symbolic returns. Its headquarters is in Riyadh.
A third institution, prize of the Arab Towns Organisation, aims to encourage renovation, innovation and preservation of the entity of Arab town, protection of environment to keep them green and beautiful.
Adasani said the Arab towns were able to balance their economic, social and environmental needs against their future needs.
They were also able to build their potentials and enabled their cadres to contribute in comprehensive development process by developing integrated and innovative techniques based on partnership with the private sector and civil society, which had contributed in promoting municipalities’ local performance.
He said additional three institutions were added to the Arab Town Organisation in Dubai, the Arab Towns Environment Centre in Amman (Jordan), the Arab Forum for Information System and Heritage; and the preservation of ancient Arab Town institution in Tunisia. Their goal is to develop the Arab towns.
In his turn, Abdullah bin Abbas bin Ahmed, chairman of the Muscat Municipality gave a speech expressing his pride over the role of the organisation in consolidating relations among Arab towns achieving cooperation and coordination among member towns in order to realise their ambitions and find suitable solutions for their problems, and exchange expertise between Arab towns.
