Hey everyone,

In light of the quad bike accident that happened recently some friends of mine have started a petition for laws on quad bikes in Oman. I am sure all of you heard about the accident, some of you might even know the families that were involved. Tomorrow another accident will happen if we don't start doing something about this.

Please add your support and sign the petition, for the lost boys lives sake and for all of our children.

Is it true that they were being chased by the police and then the accident occurred.

I think they got this bad habit from UEA, I once saw in Abu dabi a crazy guy on the road over speeding and over taking with his bike.

I don't know IceTea, but I wasn't aiming to talk about the accident here anyway. And at this point it doesn't matter. I hope you do sign the petition!

Btw guys, only sign if you are an Omani citizen or live in Oman!

Nothing can be done about this.

Accidents do happen! Many people drive their quad bikes in the dunes or the beach. Some of them dont. Parents should lock the bikes at home and buy a "trailer" for the bikes to be transported to the dunes/beach.

Many people have been involved in such accidents, and now 2 young boys died due to this and suddenly everyone rised, and only 1 young boy is rememberred among all, as you can tell from the site url!

This issue has nothing to do with the police, police, as I presume have the righ to confiscate the bike if seen on the streets.

I've noticed the site url, is it something to do with a minister?

Enigma

Ross, the site's url is like that because the ppl who started the petition knew that boy (the girl was a friend of his). Personally, I'm distantly related to the other boy and that is why my family and I signed.

Not interested in the petition and I hope it doesn't stand. So many kids die because of their parents idiocy. Let these parents learn from such tragedies instead of blaming the government for anything that happens in Oman.

P.S. My youngest brother had two motor bike accidents and one of them was very serious. So don't accuse me of not knowing how such things feel.

Why isn't anyone signing? You wont lose anything by doing so. And besides its for the greater good.

We will lose driving our quad bikes freely and responsibly :)

I think it's a good source of income for the radars or not?

These things cant get past 130Km/h and are not driven on the road. They are made for the dunes. Look at people in the UAE..the rate of accidents is less, why? because people are sensible enough not to drive them somewhere other than their dunes.

I went to sign it, and then realised that I cannot because I am not Omani or an omani resident.

I agree with the petition, though I disagree with a small part where it says that the person who hires the bikes should be accountable - it should be the driver, otherwise it would encourage dangerous driving and behaviour by the drivers.

I hope the authorities do something about the current laws though. Good luck with the petition.

I imagine if they're petitioning for laws to be changed, then they must be different that the ones there are.

If not, then no harm done. Right?

Every developed country has laws on these kinds of things. Rosso, its not your right to drive these things until you can prove you can drive them responsibly. Hence the laws.

I will sign the petition.

Funny thing is, only when a person/distant relative died, did people wake up to the fact that there should be laws prohibiting this....

Personally I've seen these quad bikes for ages now, and only these youngsters drive it, and all look really hazardous and irresponsible. I've always been against it, i dont need to sign no petition. The police know such things, they should act long time back.

Thanks to everyone who signed!!!

I understand those who are saying that it shouldn't be done soley because of this accident, but fact is people only wake up to these things when something happens. Sad fact but true. The thing is, we do need rules like this. We cannot always depend on parents for these things; why do we have traffic laws and laws against drugs? A country's legal system needs these rules, its part of creating a safer more regulated place for everyone.

My father died in the hospital because of doctors carelessness. So what? These things happen, don't they? I know it was unintentional so I have no grudge against them. What you did was intentional so you deserve what you got.

^^That is sort of natural though!

You're most of the time aware of things that effect you personally and you become passionate about changing them because it caused you to loss someone close to you. I think that's a good thing, for that is how our lives are partly improved from every aspect, there is always someone who is passionate about changing something in our lives (cancer research, quad bikes, prohibiting smoking etc).

Isn't driving Quad Bikes on the roads already illegal to begin with?

Yes, but there are policy considerations in that petition as well as guidelines that should be added to that law.

Ah Kids! Seriously when u dont have anything good to say its sometimes best not to say anything at all..

Elmar7oom Azzan's mother is a close relative of mine. I know that she went to great length to try stop her son from riding these bikes.. I wouldnt blame this grieving mother for not trying harder.

U were right that this is a tragedy. A tragedy that the parents had very little control over.

I pray what happened to the 2 families dont happen to a member of yours, distant or close.

A few facts about the petition as I'm one of the co-authors.
1. The petition was done by FRIENDS OF MOHAMMED AND AZZAN.
2. While it's true that Makki is in the web address, shame on the person who thinks this somehow implies that Azzan has been forgotten. We had no control over the use of Makki in the web address and were surprised to see it ourselves. Please think before you write, people!
3. To those who criticize parents, please stop. It's not an easy job being a parent to young men and mistakes do get made but no loving parent (and all of these are) would ever knowingly cause or contribute to their child's death. That's just common sense.
4. Yes, the police were chasing these kids on the quad but that doesn't make it the fault of the police. Bottom line: the quad had no business on the streets. The kids had no business riding on a quad without safety gear. BOTTOM LINE!
5. The intent behind the petition is to bring awareness to all concerned authorities that they have the support of the public to make rules and policies such as those listed in the petition. It is not known (with accuracy) what laws actually exist regarding these vehicles so we tried to leave no stone unturned. People say there are some laws...show us! We can't find any record of any such laws. THat doesn't mean they aren't there..but if they're so hard to find, then obviously we need to bring about public awareness, hence, the petition and the need for each of you to sign it.
6. For this petition to be taken seriously, it is strongly preferred that a real name be given when signing. If you prefer some anonymity, then just use a first and second name but to put up a nickname from a chat room will not be taken seriously, I hope you can understand.
7. While the site asks for your email address, and even though we authors of the petition have access to the petition via a password, your email addresses are blocked from public viewing and even from us. In no way can you be contacted by any one of us. IMPOSSIBLE! As for the worry about blogs, etc, again, impossible!!
8. We asked for those who sign to let us know their native country so that the concerned authorities will know that both the expat and Omani populations support this petition, that it's not somehow limited to one group of people but the general public with the restriction being only that it is signed by residents of Oman, of any nationality, or non-resident Omanis (to whom such laws also impact.)
9. It is impossible to lose your freedom to drive your quads responsibly because if you are riding them responsibly, keyword don't miss it "responsibly", then you won't be breaking any of these proposed laws and policies nor are you now! If you are breaking any one of them, then you aren't being responsible and shouldn't have such a freedom, in the humble opinion of more than 200 signatures!! (Thank you one and all!)

10. Finally, to the person who says "nothing can be done about this" -- with all do respect, you are wrong. Inaction it the reason why nothing is done but this petition has taken a lot of action and so things around town will get better thanks to people who have the ability to learn from this tragedy and grasp the fact that things have to change, action must be taken, for there to not be a repeat.

To all those who have signed, we thank you one and all. To those who prefer inaction, I hope you've read all of my points and will reconsider being a part of this solution and not a part of the problem.

Thanks a lot for sharing. I signed the petition. I was always against these kind of things. I don't know if the government people realise that everything is on their @$$, and they should prevent these kind of things. They probably have laws, but don't bother using them, or just ignore them.
