As a member of the Jewish ultra-Orthodox community, David wore a long black coat and a black hat covering his Jewish skullcap.

He spent 10 hours a day studying the Torah, the Jewish holy book, and the Talmud, rabbinical discussions on Jewish law, ethics and customs.

David says that he used to want to be a rabbi - but that was then.

Now, David, 24, wears blue jeans and loose-fitting T-shirts. He no longer believes in religion, saying that he is completely secular.

He is currently at university and hopes to become an engineer.

David - who does not want use his full name - is one of hundreds of young Israelis who leave their ultra-orthodox communities to join the secular world, according to Daat Emet, an organisation that works on the issue.

So they consider People who leave the ultra-orthodox community unbelievers who have lost their way in life !!!!

It should be pointed out that the slanted article (which oh so mournfully laments that religious schools don't teach secular subjects, which are usually useless in life, but fails to mention that the secular schools of the secular state of Israel leave children utterly ignorant of their rich Jewish heritage) quoted in the 1st post neglects to mention the tens of thousands of Jews in the Holy Land and worldwide who have abandoned a secular lifestyle and adopted their timeless Jewish heritage in their daily lives. The BBC never bothered doing an article on them, my how surprising .

Where does it say that ?

All it says is that this particular kid came to realize that all the religion he was studying was, in fact, just myth.

Good for him.

There are all kinds of psychological and pharmachological treatments available now for treating this kind of mental disease. Perhaps the BBC didn't want to make the state of Israel seem backward and still living in the Dark Ages.
