Should I go there by car from Muscat? How many hours drive? Or is it better to fly? How long will the flight take? Are there daily flights? And what are the main hotels there? I intend to tour around there, is it better to rent a car or go by taxi? How much do they usually charge?

Go by road, it may take you 7 hours depending on what horse power you are on, and you will not only enjoy the drive of what appears to be an endless road, but you will be able to see the contry side as well. As you begin to ascend the Dhofar highland while leaving Thumrait, after Aqabat Humrair the land begins to change dramatically from light brown to green and greener if you intend to travel during June/July. I think flying takes less than 3 hrs depending on the type of your flying machine.

7 hours!? That's a long shot! Is the road monitored? Any SOS? Are there rest stops every half an hour or so along the road?
I won't be travelling during June and July. My trip will be in March and April.
3 hours flying!? Is Salalah that far? My "flying machine" would be the local Airlines. Are you from Salalah?
Thanks for the info :)

No am not from Salalah. But I've been to Salalah. The terain is different from other parts in the Northern. I've been travelling by road but not recently. I hear there has been a lot of improvement on the road. I hear there are rest points I don't know about SOS facilities and regarding road monitoring I have no idea. If you could search Travel Agencies sites you might get proper and accurate answers to your questions.

Personally am out of date regarding the topic I was merely offering what I know hoping others on the site might contribute something they know. Thus giving you a clear picture in the end.

Flight from Muscat to Salalah daily - 2 1/2 hours.
By car - 8 - 12 hours.
By bus - 12 hours.
Guest houses and petrol stops every 200 / 300 Km approx.
SOS places - none. Occasionally there will be military posts (mostly in khareef season) who will help.
Hotels - 5* are Hilton Salalah and Crowne Plaza. Mostly booked with the Swedish tours. Also available are various 3* and 2* hotels (Haffa house, Salalah hotel, Dhofar hotel etc etc). Also Salalah youth hostel apartments.
Roads are ok, but not fit for 'fast drivers' or drivers used to Muscat or UAE highways! Camels, goats and cows have right of way.
Hire cars available at the hotels or airport. Average 12 to 15 rials a day for saloon car.
Not much greenery at the moment as no rain or khareef! Lots of dust around at present.
Any other info, let me know.
