So what do you think of games as a whole??
Do you consider them useful or a waste of time? Why?
Would you encourage your children to play games? If or if not... why?

Were there ever things you happened to learn or know about from a game?

I think of games as another form of entertainment. Its a mix of books and TV.. a form of escapism and such.

I don't consider them a waste of time at all since they're fun to play and interact with a world that you would not reach unless you ask God your greatest desires (personally I'd want the land of chocolate but thats another thing).

I would most certainly encourage my children to play games.. As they are fun, enjoyable and in a way, would make the family unite together to do family activities together (plus kids will think yur the hip cool dad when you pwn them in multiplayer)

Usually one would say that from games you can learn hand eye coordination, quick reflexes and other crazy stunts and info from games but to me personally, my english has greatly increased over the years thanks to the readable text in most videogames. This type of english is the most common and most talked with in any culture. Of course I learnt it from other fun stuff while I was a kid.. replacing educational crappy stuff.. For books, i preferred reading comics. For educational programes on tv, I use to play videogames. Heck even when i was doing my homeworks back in the day, i remember setting up my table facing the tv and watching the latest action flicks like Johnny Quest, Swat cats or the centurions :p Even with the latest brain age game on the ds made work fun!.. who knew math could be so easy... I kid you not... this game made me somehow love simple arithmetics and I don't even have to use the calculator to solve some problems

Personally couldn't have said it better morpha!

that depends on what type of game you play ofcourse but in many things you said you're right.
My English improved form Final Fantasy :XD:... at least I learnt about a dozen words I never heard before...
didn't know that ether was a real word. and elixir... panacea... some words I read in science book suddenly hit me as something familiar cuz I use it in a game :XD:...

i've been playing games since I was a kid... and no kidding but it did have an influence on me

The games I played were always stories most of all...

so to me... I'd most certainly encourage my kids to play them and recommend the games I loved to them :p...

I definetly agree with you 3T

Problem is nowadays most games are becoming way too complicated for kids, too long, too difficult and pretty darn violent.. And because of this, if kids play it, they'll be more use to violence at such a tender age which is very weird..

Personally I think I'll start with a few Atari and NES games for them to play the core games.. that way they won't be easily prone to violence.

Gaming as interactive form of entertainment, it is an experience similar to watching a movie, reading a book, and solving a puzzle all blended together. A game does not have to be educational for it not be considered a waste of time, it is just like any other form of art or literature which the reception of should be acknowledged as a form of media consumption.

When your kids are young, you buy the game you think is appropriate for them, and when they grow up they won't be affected by the violence or other stuff. I think gaming isn't a waste of time, Heck, I got really good at english from my PS2, not school.

It's only a waste of time if it consumes most of the day and stops you from doing your other important daily activities (studying? work? spending time with family and friends?) otherwise I would encourage my children to play the games that I find appropriate for their age. And I don't like games that promote violence or sexuality so I would rather keep my children away from those.

I find games very useful, personally, I have learned alot from games, even my english comes from games (And movies).. Can you imagine that? BUT (here is comes) playing it 24/7 makes you lose your social life, so in that case it's a bad idea..

ive learned that a good tip to save bullets is to shoot with a shotgun straight to the head instead of wasting 3-5 bullets from a handpistol or a pistol ! :)
that WILL help in real life !!! :D

Well some games are phenomenal. I love the way they dress up those RPG characters lol I even went and cut my hair like Yuna from FFX2 at some point haha. I think some games such as FF greatly strengthen your sense of imagination.
