View Full Version : The punishment for homosexuality in Christianity
I am sure that such homosexuals situation is not accept it (at least for most of the normal people).
Referring to jack thread Islamic punishment for Gay/Lesbians per Quran? (http://www.englishsabla.com/forum/showthread.php?t=44355) ... and to have the other side of the story
I really would like to know about the punishment for homosexuality in Christianity
* Is it accepted ?
* what are the punishments ?
I would like to know also, thanx storm ;)
My understanding is the Bible did call for the death of homosexuals. Not sure how they were supposed to be put to death.
It is also my understanding that no country on earth today uses the Bible as to administer civil or criminal law as does some Islamic countries that uses the Quran/sharia law ...
So Icys insistence that there is some kind of "compare and contrast" is invalid for the discussion.
And the punishment for homosexuals in the bible is a moot point until a nation uses the Bible to administer civil or criminal law.
I am sure that such homosexuals situation is not accept it (at least for most of the normal people).

As a Catholic myself we were taught from a very young age in school that being gay was wrong and that it was a Sin and that if we were Gay, that God would punish us by sending us to Hell, once we died....
And that we would remain in Hell forever....
But as time goes by and people understand more about people being gay it is being accepted... there is no punushment in socity for being gay...
And in Ireland we even have Gay bars and resturants and even get car and life insurance for Gay couples....
People shouldn't be punished just because they don't fit the "norm" of socity... It is the diffenecs that make people special and they should be proud of themselves for just being themselves....

Why countries ignoring the Bible teachings?
Don't you think this will help gays/lesbians to increase, so you won't find a wife to marry?

Well as times change and peoples views also changes....
And as for the Catholic church it was changing with Pope John Paul he was bring it in that being gay didn't mean that you were going to go to Hell....
He understood that being Gay wasn't a bad thing and no one should be punished for who they were...
But with the great lost of a great man :( it has set the Catholic Church back so much, coz with the new Pope he is a total Left wing person he is the oppisite to Pope Jonh Paul....
God blessed them and said to them, "Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air and over every living creature that moves on the ground. (Genesis 1:28)
The two angels arrived at Sodom in the evening, and Lot was sitting in the gateway of the city. When he saw them, he got up to meet them and bowed down with his face to the ground. "My lords," he said, "please turn aside to your servant's house. You can wash your feet and spend the night and then go on your way early in the morning." ... Before they had gone to bed, all the men from every part of the city of Sodom—both young and old—surrounded the house. They called to Lot, "Where are the men who came to you tonight? Bring them out to us so that we can have sex with them." .... They kept bringing pressure on Lot and moved forward to break down the door. But the men inside reached out and pulled Lot back into the house and shut the door. ... The two men said to Lot, "Do you have anyone else here—sons-in-law, sons or daughters, or anyone else in the city who belongs to you? Get them out of here, because we are going to destroy this place. The outcry to the LORD against its people is so great that he has sent us to destroy it." ... By the time Lot reached Zoar, the sun had risen over the land. Then the LORD rained down burning sulfur on Sodom and Gomorrah—from the LORD out of the heavens. (Genesis 19)
Do not lie with a man as one lies with a woman; that is detestable. (Leviticus 18:22)
Manuscript illustration of David and Jonathan embracing, c. 1300 AD (British Museum). Some believe David and Jonathan had a homosexual relationship.
If a man lies with a man as one lies with a woman, both of them have done what is detestable. They must be put to death; their blood will be on their own heads. (Leviticus 20:13)
Can our christian members help me understand this quote ! and if it is right or wrong !

Interesting, people do change right but God rules should remain the same right, do you think that is why there are many versions, variations and contraditions in the Bible?
Beside that is the Pope considered as God to make and change the Bible rules?
Christianity has to be looked at through the prism of what Jesus taught.
(hint hint : Christianity - Jesus Christ - get the connection ?)
He was explicit in opinion that we do not judge lest we be judged.
Therefore, it is not our place or time to decide what punishment gays should receive.
Homosexuality is wrong, but we are not God to decide punishment.
Hope that cleared it up for you.
I think Hiyam is talking rubbish.
Pope JP II did nothing to say that Homosexuality was not wrong or that it was acceptable in any way.
He might have said that we should treat gays with compassion (and that is the Christian thing to do) , but that is completely different from saying that JP2 condoned homosexuality.

So wudjab, it is not written anywhere in the Bible that Homosexuality should be punished ?
AFAIK punishment for homosexuality is mentioned in the old testament.
As is punishment for adultery and a whole bunch of other things.
But Christianity is based on the ultimate teaching of Jesus Christ.

Not at all.
Storm, it's confusing for non-Christians to understand the relationship of the Christianity to Judaism.
The Bible has two parts: The Old Testament, the scripture of the Jews; and the New Testament, the Gospel of Jesus Christ and the writings of His Apostles.
The position of Christians is that the New Testament fulfills the old Law and except for the bedrock moral principles, we no longer live under the Law. All the particular rules are abolished because of a new attitude.
Let's give an example from the New Testament. Jesus came on a crowd of people getting ready to stone a woman. He asked them what she did wrong? They said, she committed adultery and we are going to stone her as God commanded Moses.
So Jesus said, Okay, stone her. But let the man who is without sin cast the first stone. So, slowly they dropped their stones and drifted away.
The woman knelt before Jesus and thanked Him. "Go and sin no more," he told her. He acknowledged the justice of the Law about adultery, but showed us that we are unfit to be the judges because the Law condemns every man on earth.
So, we don't have fixed rules for punishment, you see. That's against Christianity. Christian countries can MAKE rules, but they are not absolute. You could make a law imprisoning homosexuals. Or you could simply leave them alone. You might even execute them. All these are man-made applications of justice and our religion does not bind us to them.
You have to understand the basic principle: Christianity is not a religion of Law, like Judaism and Islam are. The Law as the governing principle of life in religion has passed away and been fulfilled by the coming of Jesus Christ. That doesn't mean we don't have to obey the basic principles of morality, but it means that Legalism is not the path to Holiness, in fact it is the opposite, the path AWAY from Holiness. The point of the Law, according to the New Testament, is to show us that we could not follow it and we needed Salvation.
So, whenever you think of a question like this, just remember the basic rule: No fixed rules for punishment in Christianity.
Wudjab is right about homosexuality. The Church teaches that doing homosexual actions or even deliberately thinking about them to get pleasure is a sin. But the Church does not condemn people who have such urges...it's part of the sickness of sin that affects everyone.
Someone who has homosexual urges should not embrace them, but resist them and pray and try to live a good life. The urges are not sinful unless you embrace them and act on them. There are various organizations for faithful homosexuals who want to live a chaste life and stop sinning, such as "Courage" in the Catholic Church.
