View Full Version : Attendance..
In some universities attendance is obligatory while in others it isn’t..
So. In ur point of view:
Do you think it should be? Or shouldn’t be? And why
WoLF DoLL 07-12-06, 06:49 PM Shouldent,shouldent, shouldent !!
i know that attendence is really important for the devolopment of the coures and it helps the student alot, BUT some students hate attending classes but in the end they do great in their projects and exams.
i think it depends on the student himself, if not attending would delay his devlopment of understanding the coures.
but i think that the unviersity shouldent punish the student if he attends in giving them Fs or whatsoever!
i wish if my unversity doesnt takes attendence *sob*
Shinoda LP 07-12-06, 07:19 PM Should be left upto the Professor's discretion. If he/she thinks that students can learn the material at home and still do well without coming to classes, then waive it... else make it mandatory.
In most of my classes, they'd allow X number of absences without any consequence. Anything over that would be a -5, -10 or dropping a whole letter grade... whichever makes the Professor happy.
Navigator 07-12-06, 09:49 PM Well depends cant just have an absolute decision on that ! But as Shanoodat Qalbi said it should be left to the professor!
Or lets say If you miss more than 10 % of the lectures , they subtract 10 marks from your final mark !
Rossonero 07-12-06, 09:51 PM Im telling you a secret, Uni's monitor a "few" classes in your course.
Im in the Student Staff Liaison Committee, in the last meeting of the term they told us they have been monitoring Phys and Chem.
Next term they will monitor something else but wont tell us lol.
well, i personally think that if attendance is important..the student would know that he/she has to attend..making them attend will just make them attend for the sake of attending!
true Shinoda!
Dam3eti 09-12-06, 11:10 PM Shouldn't
Its up to the student to show up or not, what if you really don't feel like going and don't feel like you'll miss anything important. I miss upto 6 classes of each course every semester if not more (the limit is 3).
Attendance should be banned. I mean back in my former college, I used to skip classes like crazy I eventually got two warnings for not attending.
I think it should be obligatory. You gain easy marks, so why not?
Some of my classes have an attendence of 10% for toturials only (you don't have to attend lectures), and I love that about it, because I can easily gain that 10% with participation and attending 10 out of 13 tutorials in a semester.
Not only that, it forces you to actually be there and learn. I mean, a lot of my friends don't attend because they don't have to and they are lazy, they end up failing the class- wasting their parents money in the process. Sometimes, I don't feel that university students are mature or serious enough with their studies.
Rossonero 10-12-06, 02:00 AM Well, its made for those who are on scholarships. They dont care if you are paying and not attending, its your money
I don't think it should be obligatory, but I'm someone who never misses a class without a pretty good excuse.
Shinoda had a good point about the professors choosing. Overall I think that you are an adult, in college, its high time you took responsiblity yourself to attend classes and learn without someone forcing or bribing you.
Endure Whisper 10-12-06, 09:37 AM It shouldn't be obligatory! A student in a college/university is an adult and old enough to know the importance of education, and how he/she should be concerned about attending his/her classes.
the attendance record is essential for the tutor specially after the final results of the course. He/she uses it to defend himself infront of the education dean in case if there were failures in the course.
attendance depends on teh tutor performance. Student may not attaend If the tutor provides self-explainatory notes. However, if teh tutor is very good in lecturing and students understand more in lecture than teh notes then they will be forced to attend.
thus, i tottaly support what EndureW has mentioned above... college students are adult and they know what is important and what is not....they will be responsible for any failure they face.
Dam3eti 10-12-06, 08:37 PM We don't get grades for attending so sometimes when it's an 8 oclock class and I have a 20 minute drive ahead of me I just prefer to sleep in :p
Black Lolly 10-12-06, 08:43 PM shouldnt, it should be up to the person to attend or not, at least thats what i want.. to be able to miss lectures i dont think will do me any good..
I mean we've got brains to decide for ourselves.. Whos idiotic enough to skip more than 3 classes one after the other..?
Thats what im expecting from uni next year anyways..:shy:
Inshallah..:p
Libellula 10-12-06, 09:20 PM I'm not sure about this.
My university doesn't take attendance for lectures. I only have to go to tutorials which is once a week.
As a result, so many students skip lectures and only come into uni one or twice a week.
I'd like to think that those of us who are at uni are mature and responsible enough to make our own decisions, but sometimes we tend to get lazy. Maybe it'd be better for some classes to take attendance, while other classes that are relatively easy can be a little more laid back.
This semester itself, I know that I cannot miss lectures for two of my classes because the lecturer is really good for those two, and I do absorb a lot in class. As for the other two, going to lectures is a total waste of time because the lecturer can't explain well at all, and I get more work done by reading the text book on my own.
tiarathrones 10-12-06, 10:00 PM it shouldnt be... its university...give us a break...12 years was enough to abide by rigid rules

that makes me think it REALLY shouldn't!
eventually its the student's loss right?
MorphaKnight 11-12-06, 12:23 AM While I would like to agree seeing that I too get an easy 20% in attendance and participation, I'm going to disagree..
A university prepares oneself to the real world.. high school is merely the spoonfeeding while forcing you to sit in your chair and giving you all the stuff you need.. University is where you learn to hunt for yourself. The way I see it, your personalities are defined in universities. You yourself define your personality and show the world who you are and that you're willing to sacrifice time in order to do what is neccessary to have a successful future. It is in universities where people learn of the consequences of not showing up to class because you're lazy.. Most of the students here in my uni argue because of their abscences claiming they do attend when they really don't and honestly its just a hassle for most of the class and the professors because we all know they're just ebing idiots... I say that eventually your work will be shown in your grades and I believe grades or exams show what you have learned from the course..
so yeah.. i say get rid of it.. I believe it will develop the personalities of people when they realise the consequence of not attending means you're wasting your parents money.. they will be much more responsible.. unfortunately the youth today don't respond to warnings and notices.. rather they only take heed when something serious happens to them... and strangely enough thats what happens to all humans with their life and when they'll be in front of God..
