View Full Version : How many times a year do you take antibiotics?
Ducklet Cat 02-12-06, 08:53 PM 1) I was just wondering, how many times a year do have antibiotics desribes to you?
And what is the most frequest brabd you doctor prescribe to you?
Antibiotics are not sugar candy, that' for sure, but I discovered that I took antibiotics around 5 times every year in the past two years. :os
I needed it in all of the case and it was prescribed by doctors.
2) Are there any types of food that would boost the immunity and reduce my need to antibiotics?
Thanks :)
Arabian Princess 02-12-06, 10:40 PM I dont remmber taking any for the past two years .. the most I suffer is cold and I dont go to the docter when I have that .. I just take care of it myself with my loving panadol :D
Antibiotics are abused mostly by the patients in Oman, I agree that many GP's prescribe anitbiotics for upper respiratory tract infections which are mainly viral
Vast majority of those infections are self limited & do not require antibiotics whatsoever unless they are complicated by secondary bacterial infections
Patients need to be educated about the drugs & also taught that antibiotics do not treat the viral infections & as a matter of fact they can further complicate the issue because taking those anti-microbial drugs can change the normal floral constitution of the throat for instance
Many do start taking the drugs but do not complete the full course thus resulting in resistant micro-organisms, this is a serious issue
A well balanced diet is all you need for a healthy immune system, make it a habit to have fresh fruits as your dessert
Libellula 02-12-06, 11:55 PM I have a couple of boxes of antibiotics sitting in my fridge.
I take them whenever I have a fever, sore throat, or feel nauseous (along with other medication).
Last time I took some was last month. The one I have is called Amoxil.
Navigator 02-12-06, 11:58 PM I rarely take anti biotics , last time i had was something like 7 yrs ago !
Rossonero 03-12-06, 12:45 AM Never, alhamdulilah I never get sick
DC thanx for the topic..
Yeap Hitman you are absolutely right..
People must be educated about the use of antibiotics...
most of omani are now resistant to amoxicillin (amoxil)...IF you go to a private clinic you will get one shoot of antibiotic injection for just a minor cold which is viral disease.
the problem with resistance is that there will not be a drug useful later in future infections.. doctors then must prescribe another expensive antibiotic and might have more side effects.

same is the case here, but i almost never get a fever (touch wood), but always suffer from sore throat and take amoxil for 5 days and its gone by the third day.

didnt know amoxil could ruin the normal imune system. any other solution for soar throat doctor?
Haroundb 03-12-06, 03:00 PM I take full bath (with soap and shampoo) only twice a year. This is more than enough I think!
Ducklet Cat 03-12-06, 05:38 PM Thanks Dr. Hitman and Dr. Fahad.
1- The number 1 antibiotic presribed for me was Zinnat. I remember I had a full package of Amoxil once.
Does that mean it could have affected me, or is it just when I don't complete the package.
2- Last year a new doctor prescribed two injections of an antibiotic whose name sounds like josephin or something that ends with -phin.
After the shot I felt so good, and after the next injection on the second day I was almost cured although the injections were so painful and I had pain for several weaks after them.
But I kept suffering after that of different symptoms. I checked with another physician and he told me you have a severe fatigue because that antibiotic was too strong.
Does anyone know the name of the this antibiotic? I'd like to search on the Internet about it.
Thanks, and may Allah not let you need any antibiotics :)
Haroundb 04-12-06, 09:14 AM Olfen? This is for pain in the bones and joints I think...Let Doctors answer that.
DC are u sure it was an antibiotic.. sometime private clinics inject pain killers..
antibiotics which came to my mind and sound like josofen are:
Velosef , Omnicef, Omnipen ; Omnipen, Principen, Nallpen
they are all company names (brand names). One drug might have many names depending on the company which makes it. Thus if you provide the scietific chemical name it will be easy to figure it out.

Most cases of sore throat are viral & are self limited, with symptomatic treatment they shouldn't last more than 3-4 days, by symptomatic Tx I mean: Salt water gargles & some Lozenges containing chlorhexidine & Lidocaine. However, always get an opinion of a physician & stay well :)

Rocephin is the trade name for the drug Ceftriaxone

Yes, Rocephin is the one!
Does the -phin at the end mean morphin or something like that? Because its effect was so fast, but after it I suffered, and had sore threat again and a severe fatigue.
I had another injection for the fever, but it was not olfen for sure, but I can't recall what it was.
Thanks a lot. :star:

lol no
as Hit explained, is just a commercial name, phantasy name
as every parenteral systemic use medicine it goes straight to the target [without passing in the stomach, avoiding to be partially destroyed or to go in circle too late] so that's why its action is quick
in good and bad antibiotics are powerful which explains your tiredness
