Clarence Seedorf has been named in the Holland squad for the friendly with England after a two-year absence.
The Milan midfielder will replace Wesley Sneijder of Ajax, who picked up an injury on Sunday and will not be available for Coach Marco Van Basten.
Seedorf last appeared for the Oranje in Euro 2004 and had recently admitted that he still wanted to play for his national team.
Van Basten, formerly of Milan, had previously hinted at a return for the former Real Madrid ace, but it would appear as though he will merely be a squad player for his country.
“In the last two years I spoke three times with Clarence and explained to him why we didn’t invite him,” said Van Basten last week.
“Clarence had his chance under five Coaches and never convinced. We chose a new direction two years ago and found no reason to pick him.
“He must compete with Rafael Van Der Vaart and Sneijder. For the time being, those two have my preference.
“I will not say that Seedorf will never get a chance with me as Coach, but the fact is that I prefer other players for now.”
Holland will host England on Wednesday evening at the Amsterdam Arena in one of the most high-profile friendlies scheduled this week.
