Milan defender Alessandro Nesta is considering retiring from international football, according to reports in Italy.

The 30-year-old has struggled for form of late, and he is not part of the squad who will face Turkey in a friendly on Wednesday in Bergamo.

Friends of the former Lazio man have confirmed that he could abandon the Nazionale, having suffered several injuries in the past few months, including the one which kept him out of much of the World Cup,

“You cannot always keep a clear head playing so often – I’m thinking of leaving the national team," said Nesta after the match with Roma, according to Il Corriere della Sera newspaper.

A defensive error by Nesta allowed Francesco Totti to score the opening goal of the evening on Saturday, when the Rossoneri were defeated 2-1 by the Giallorossi at the San Siro.

He was also at fault against Palermo in Week 7, when his howler was punished by Mark Bresciano, who netted the first goal of the game which ended 2-0 to the Rosanero.

Nesta is yet to extend his deal with Milan, which ends in 2008, and has recently been paired with a return to Lazio, where he appeared from 1993 to 2002.

President Claudio Lotito is allegedly ready to make an offer to bring the 2006 FIFA World Player of the Year nominee back home, although the defender is currently paid £2.8m per season.

He could therefore decide to honour his agreement with the San Siro outfit and then return to Lazio on a free transfer.

Bad luck has always been following him, WC2002, Euro2004 and WC2006..always injured.

If this is affecting his performance in Milan, then this might be the right choice

He's just unlucky , i think he's one of the best defenders in the world , but the curse of injuries following him everywhere !It would ve been great choice if he had contributed much in the winning of Germany WC.

hE could quit the Azzuri for a while , then if things get better with him he might reconsider his decision like many other players .

So do you think this azzuri thing is what is keeping him off-form?

I agree that he is one of the best defenders in the world. And yes, I think stepping aside for awhile might help him alot.
