18 October 2006
The prized football used during the memorable Oman's 2-1 win over the UAE during the 2007 Asian Cup Group 'C' qualifying match, which led to the Sultanate's second successive qualification into the Asian Cup finals, at the Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex last Wednesday is now up for auction. According to Saif al Jahwari, Director of Information Technology at the Ministry of Sports Affairs and head of sportsoman.com website, who are now the proud owners of the ball, the auctioneering began yesterday with an initial price of RO 100. Interested football lovers can participate in the auction bid by either e-mailing to info@sportsoman.com or calling up 24702859 / 92737380 / 92727052. The auction ends on October 31. Detailing on the joint venture of sportsoman.com and Oman Mobile, Saif said the ball was initially won by a Muscat-based fan, Fahd bin Ali al Hinai, as he was the lucky winner of the draw for 3,000 subscribers of the sportsgoal service, provided by the Oman Mobile. Sportsgoal service enables the subscribers in the Sultanate to receive SMS messages on the latest local sports news for a nominal fee of RO 1 and was launched six months ago in co-operation with sportsoman.com. The first six weeks saw the subscribers avail the free service and the number during the period rose to 20,000. However, for the draw, only paid subscribers' telephone numbers were included which totalled 3,000. The draw was held at the sports ministry on Monday and the winning telephone number was picked by Saif al Jahwari. Fahd was invited yesterday to receive the ball, duly stamped by the Oman Football Association, from the national soccer team manager, Juma al Qaabi. Fahd was then offered RO 100 to return the football to the sportsoman.com, which he readily agreed, and the sportsoman.com team has now begun the auction for a ball, which carries lot of sentiment for the thousands of the local fans.
