View Full Version : Posting style.
Oblivious 08-10-06, 05:58 AM Hey..
Well, this is not usually the type of threads I like to post, but...I'd like to know how do you judge members through their posts, what makes you take them seriously and think that they have something interesting to say whenever you see their nicknames in a thread so you make sure you read it? and makes you lose interest?
I noticed many member use too much smilies while posting a "serious" reply, well..when that happens, I don't consider the post as a serious one. They mess up their replies this way.
PS: without examples please.
Haroundb 08-10-06, 10:11 AM Posts are mode, sometimes funny sometimes sad, disappointed bored, or even meaningless. Humans do change overtime and this change is well described as modes.
A serious member could go very silly sometimes, and sometimes very irritating. If he is opening a thread while tired and sleepy is not the same like doing it while fresh and excited.
For example from your latest posts and this thread I can see that you are angry + bored, so what do you think?
MorphaKnight 08-10-06, 10:17 AM Well the only thing that bothers me in posts are grammar. I wouldn't mind if their english isn't strong but if its one thing i hate is that they deliberately screw the english language forming their own "lingo" if you call it. If its on instant messengers I wouldn't mind but on forums... I just hate it.. its the adult's version of a 12 year old rap/r n b wannabe girl saying "wassup witchu" or "I liek dat"
tiarathrones 08-10-06, 12:00 PM i think emoticons adds emotion to the script...
yes grammar is a problem with me too (a problem to read that is )
e.g: "Well the only thing that bothers me in posts are grammar." <-- !!!
my point in bringing this up ,( please don't hit me oblivious - i know examples ain't allowed) but my point morpha (and the rest)...is that...sometimes we just have to let people express themselves, the way they feel most comfortable. its a forum no ? whats the fun if every post is predictably "normal"..no spice...no flow! no fun!.... no e.s!

Well, maybe that's true, but..I'm not angry nor bored, I don't have time to feel bored lol, but I'm too honest maybe, and it's getting me, I used to shut up before, now it jus got too much to handle, if you know what I mean.
And, you didn't answer my question by the way.
PS: without examples please.
Oh, come on let them give some examples...:os
Oh i forget i shouldn't use the smilies...:os (sorry old habit...:p :yell: )

Now you are truely angry...
Oblivious 08-10-06, 03:06 PM huh? walla I'm not angry.
You can give examples if you're going to stay on topic =P
Ok, now i m serious..
Smilies, i think, are good to clearify some hidden emotions and feelings from a post...
Usually it is easy for me to identify a feeling from a word...
but that is always uncertain as the poster him/herself couldn't express it right...
Some smilies are crucial and some are just to add...

I totally agree with you tiara. I wouldn't mind people if people can spice up their own way writing. One thing that is more of a pet peeve is that when you have a serious discussion, they then reply in a not so serious way. Its not just the grammar, its more like the purpose behind it. I'd love to use an example from a certain member (and there are plenty from him) but aside from him/her finding out, it's rude.
Personally I would love it more if people can express themselves with smilies or just hilarious comments but as for comments that are just deliberately improper...meh i won't say anything.. its just another pet peeve i have :p
sunmoon 08-10-06, 04:41 PM Hmmm... I get my days where i use alot of smilies! So it really depends on how I'm feeling when I write the post!
But there are times where I read my posts and say I could've wrote much better! So I see what you are trying to say...
:)
You don't really have to post super-mega-extra long replies to be considered "serious". some members have this ability to convey interesting thoughts in a few sentences. Personally speaking, I sometimes avoid reading really long replies even if they were serious. My eyes hurt you know...
Regarding smilies, I do use them lol and I use "lol" a lot, but this doesn't mean I'm not serious.
Libellula 08-10-06, 04:59 PM I avoid posts that are full of spelling and grammar mistakes. It just gets on my nerves when people can't form proper sentences, so I just skip those posts altogether. Not using punctuation - full stops, commas, speech marks, and capital letters also bugs me sometimes.
Also, there have been occasions when I couldn't be bothered to read super-long posts where the person just sort of repeats the same thing over and over again in a variety of different ways. Try to be succinct and just make your point and move on.
Posts where someone keeps on going like lol, loooool, haha, hehheheeheh every couple of words annoy me as well. Skip, please.
I don't mind smilies, but try not to go overboard.
well, about Grammatical and spelling mistakes..might be annoying coz it gets hard to understand but..ppl are trying to improve otherwise they won't be here posting :mmhmm:
i hate long posts..some need to make their point really clear but..can't you at least summarize it to a 10-20 lines post?
Metal_Maniac 09-10-06, 12:01 PM Let's face it, english isn't our first language and so I don't mind the grammer part of a post but to screw up the language on purpose puts me off. It's difficult to read such posts. The use of smiley's helps too. As for judging someone by their posts, it does not take too long. I guess once you've read a few posts, you'll have a fair idea as to what kind of a person the member is. (serious / fun / jerk / etc..)

Metal_Maniac 09-10-06, 12:29 PM Now, that's a real bad post :)
There are specific members that I regularly read what they've to say on any topic. However, if I spot a new member who interests me with his/her posting style (coherent sentences, interesting ideas, correct spellings), then I might start checking out their posts as well.
Just as I've members who I regularly read, I've members who I automatically ignore unless the thread itself is interesting and I am reading what everybody has posted.
ToomuchaT 09-10-06, 04:37 PM .. i dont care abt the posting style.. i just need to see how ppl think!!
.. this is not Quran so i need to be perfect in spellin and punctuation!!
.. sometimes we need to save the server some bits and bites!!
The brain. 10-10-06, 10:51 PM Yes Tommu,
But there are good poster don’t deliver the message, because their posts are really annoying.. . too much repetition ...too much colures or to much Italian font…. and too much dots (like my self)
I will say: It is OK to post, GOOD to let some one read it, and BEST to deliver the message..
I like people who write well and people who just type any old thing. I take them all seriously.
I don't know what I look for. Something unique, something original in the writer's style or personality...something that makes them stand out. One of the people I like very well has only written two posts total. Another writes all the time, ALL the time.
Some of the people I like use smilies constantly and abbreviate words; others hardly at all.
One of the things that I like about Sabla is that so many different kinds of people manage to talk to each other and even like each other. I'm a great fan of variety and I enjoy getting to know people who are completely different from me.
If you only have contact with the same kind of people as yourself, you miss out on a huge spectrum of humanity and there are all sorts of things you don't learn. I've learned so much from people who might not be as intellectual as I am, for example. But you just turn a corner and you find that they are smart or wise in some way that you aren't.
I'm so happy that I have made good friends here among those who get into political and religious debates and also with those who wouldn't be caught dead near any such thing.
Of course, one of the stand out people here is the author of this thread: Oblivious. I always wonder why she chose that name...she's so sharp and clever and seems "oblivious" of almost nothing. I also wonder why a big-hearted and really nice girl would call herself "Tiny Heart"! Who could mistake her Sabla style for that of anyone else?
Anyway, three cheers for all the Sablians! Long may you prosper.
Arabian Princess 10-10-06, 11:24 PM I admit that posting style may affect my preception towards how serious the person is .. example some one who use lots of smilies would give the impression that they dont take things seriously ..
but generally, if the thread is intresting, I would try to read everyone's posts
*FaLLiNG STaR* 10-10-06, 11:41 PM I always skip long posts. I like it when a member gives his/her opinion in very short sentences. Also, what'a annoying if the member doesn't use proper english, just like MorphaKnight mentioned.
