its happened to me when i bought a new laptop, its came with an orginal CD, and i used to update it daily but suddenly a popup message showed says the copy is pirated. I sent them an email to ask why its showing this, after two week i received the whole update package in one CD by the mail...
go to the support section at: www.microsoft.com it might be usefull for you,,,

Desert_Sloath: Did that show up on your PC or laptop? And is it branded or assembled? And did were you asked of what sort of windows arrangement you wanted or you didnt ask? Simply but, were you aware that your windows was not with an original key or did they tell you it was original ?
DS, I have a pirated copy of Windows XP. Let me know if you wanna reinstall :D

Just find a support number for Windows and call them up. Tell them that you brought this computer pre-loaded with windows XP and now it gives you that message. The support person will either give you a new activation key or correct yours.
Shouldn't be a big deal.
