SULAIMANIYAH, Iraq Kurdistan's president has ordered the Iraqi national flag to be replaced with a Kurdish flag.

That's according to local officials in Iraq's northern autonomous region.

Iraq's Kurds have been slowly gaining power since the U-S-led invasion of Iraq, and the move Friday appeared to be another step toward self-rule.

The Kurdish region had been out of Saddam Hussein's control since the 1991 Gulf War, when the Kurds set up under the protection of U-S and British warplanes.

Sunni Arabs fear that Kurds are pushing for secession under the nation's new federal system. They also don't want to see the Shiite majority in oil-rich southern Iraq follow the Kurd's lead.

Iraq's new constitution allows for self-rule but within the Iraqi state.

Do you think they will do this without the US permission?

Is Iraq a divided country now?

Is Iraq a divided country now? Thats was the whole issue Saddam had to fight them to keep them under control .. you will see now how Al malki suffer and use force to get them back under one flag ( just like Saddam did )

But this is an old issue, right?

I mean the Kurds said, right from the start, "This is the flag of our murderers. It will never fly on Kurdish soil." They never even considered anything else.

The solution, I think, would have been to find a new flag for the whole country that everyone could accept, but the other Iraqis wouldn't do it. But the Iraqi flag has not flown in Kurdistan since the war EXCEPT over the President's offices there. And even there, without the added words from the Quran that Saddam put on during the first Gulf War.

Sigh...another one of those problems that could be solved with a little good will on both sides. Why not let the Sunni and Shia Arabs keep the old flag for their regions and have a new flag for united Iraq? But everybody's too stubborn...

Don't you have an Iraqi Kurd on Sabla? I thought I saw his picture. Ask him what he thinks....
