Overview
Infection of the urinary tract is not uncommon among the female sex; however, there is a certain condition that many women suffer from once they begin to engage in frequent sexual intercourses, this condition is called honeymoon cystitis
This term is used because many develop the condition when they get married & start the sexually active life
Cystitis means inflammation/infection of the urinary bladder, honeymoon cystitis does not necessarily mean that the induvidual is suffering from an infection of the bladder, repeated intercourse leads to local inflammation of the urethra which can lead to the same symptoms as of a UTI
Signs & symptoms
Urinary urgency, painful urination, pain over the pubic area & cloudy or even blood stained urine, fever with chills
Diagnosis
After the history given by the patient, the urine routine test must be done which will show a high WBC count & when the diagnosis is established then a sample of urine should be sent for urine culture & sensivity to identify the exact bacteria that caused the infection as well the antibiotic to which it is resistant or sensitive
The usual bacteria causing the infection is E. Coli
Treatment
Antibiotics in combination with Phenazopyridine (Pyridium). The symptoms usually improve within 24 hrs, but the full course of antibiotics must be completed, which is usually 5 days
Abstinence till the infection has cleared up
Prevention
Plenty of water, cranberry juice, urination before & especially after sexual intercourse
