It's an email client. Which means it can transmit emails from/to your email account in the internet by using protocols (methods) called POP3/SMTP.

For example, if you have a omantel email. You can use this software to make it download all the emails to it (basically to your PC) instead of you having to check the website everytime.

- Do ask if I wasnt clear or you had more questions...

I have not checked this recently, but I do not think that the standard hotmail accounts offer POP3 services, and this means that you will not be able to check your hotmail account through Outlook. You will need to upgrade your hotmail account to a paid service to be able to do this.

You should be able to configure your NTL email account through it though, but you will need a POP3 address, which is a method for receiving emails through an email client, and an SMTP address to send messages through the client. If you have those two addresses, you could easily just use the New Account Wizard feature in Outlook to setup your email with ease. You could get those details by contacting your ISP.

If you made up your mind to use an email client, I suggest that you check out Thunderbird, it is a free open source email client from the makers of Firefox.
