I was told once that reading or watching fantasy stories is useless... let alone writing or creating them... along with being artistic in any way. They don't see what good it could bring.

I offered a friend to read a novel once and she said she doesn't read fiction stories because she doesn't see how it'd be of any use to her. She said she prefers non-fiction or scientific books.

Another episode was when I was caught creating an artwork and was told off for having nothing better to do except work on my useless fantasies as they called it. I was asked to wake up from my slumber.

what are your views on this? Are Fantasies useless you suppose? What about playing video games and reading novels?
Do you think being an artist is useless as well?...

I find that creativity is the one thing that makes us similar to God. With creativity, we can have many perceptions of life, unique thinking and creativity is what makes innovate or invent newer things that aid us in life. Without Science fiction books we're not able to invent more interesting ways of survival tools or attempts on invisibility. The human mind itself is meant to be creative because that is what makes us think. Improvisation along with creativity helps a person greatly to solve a problem. Why its without creativity, Adam would never have been able to name those birds and animals. Its what makes us unique among other creatures and in front of God.

I disagree with that. You better get creative and do something that you enjoy even if it doesn't bring anything useful at the end of the road, instead of sitting boring your life!
Besides, I really think you end up learning something new when you read or watch fantasies or fiction books/programs/movies. Some way or another, you gain!

I think in way or other it may give you a hint, a new idea that will be useful and help you in your life even that if it's at the end seems useless.

thats just alot of crap !!

alot of us live for art !! i say read fantasy books they broaden ur imagination and i believe that there is a moral in every noval or story!

i find fantasy video games lots of fun and just cant have enough of it !!

and about ur art work...u make alot of ppl go WOW and wish they could have a lil of ur creativty.

Plus reading in general is a chance to improve ur vocabulary. Not useless at all. Those with no imaginations make for boring people.

Art doesnt have to imitate life. there's no fun in that.

thats alot of shit ... ppl who think its useless are going no where..
some fantasies can come reality ,, like walking on the moon or managing to talk and see a person thats lives 1000 of miles away from u ,, that was all just fantasies in the past and now its possible . (well except for the moon part which i think is a scum :p)

how do u think ppl came up with ideas like planes ? it must have all started from fantasies ..

to came up with something new and useful ppl need to think out of the box

i strongly disagree..

fiction and fantasies builds a very interesting Character..and i agree with fatamoo,storm_silent and EW..

you gain something..it always inspire..and most of the time it's the click you need to Enrich your life..in away

i also find that ppl with a wide imagination are always smarter..and cool to hang out with :hehe:

and it can be the perfect place to escape reality which SUCKs!!

and without creativity and imagination..you can be a very boring person..which would be a huge problem since we already have so many of those :mmhmm:

As long as the person doesn't turn into a raving lunatic and believe Aliens are going to take over the world and use us as power-batteries, its all good.

sometimes a Dream can teach how to acheave an invention.
Fantasies are part of humans development and as well part of any past/furture civilization!

Art...depends much on dreaming and fantasizing things!
Art as such can be considered a measure on how a civilization reached to a Top standard...

well ,, i see that fantasies lead to new ideas,, specially in arts and furnitures .. coz of the colours and styles ,, tht is my humble opinion :P

and i forgot ,, + its fun ,, but not for me ,, i dont like fantasies that much ,, but for others ,, y3ni i dont mind

ya scarhead i like fanatasies but i like non fiction books too they like a mirror to other ppl lives

keep dreaming, dreams create vision, vision leads to action and action can lead to achievement. If you are enjoying your fantasies and they are keeping you cool indulge by all means, those who talk otherwise are deprived ones while you are the gifted one.

If you dont dream, then you're not living.. Thats what I say..

I for one, enjoy fantasy and fiction VERY MUCH! Im also simple minded, so yes I believe in Aliens, wish Harry Potter and his world really existed, and believe in Unicorns! Oh.. And I also wish there were mermaids, fairies and dragons..

Hey, watching such movies and reading these novels is only part of being creative.. the fact that you have the capability to absorb and comprehend such movies/cartoons and novels only means you have the tendency to be a really creative person!

Its enough that reading itself, broadens your mind, you begin to think differently, you'd be able to widen your imagination, instead of narrowing it down.. You'd be able to dream!

I want a flying broomstick and magical potions.. :(

The important thing though, is to balance between your creative dream world and reality..

I think whomever told u that creativity is useless, is just jealous of you, and your artistic flair.
