Deviated Nasal Septum is very common, and not everyone who has it knows he or she has a deviated septum.

1- In case breathing is obstructed and the person wants do do the corrective surgery, Can the the surgery done under local anesthesia?

2- what happens exactly in the surgery?is it true that the surgeon gets the cartilage out of the nose, fix it, and then put it back? :eh:

3- the the outer look of the nose improve, or is it a pure internal thing?

I noticed that those who have a deviated septum have one of their profiles different than the other due to the shape of the nose.
So, is that due to the deviated septum, or is it something else that requires a rihnoplasty?

Thanks.

It is mentioned in the ENT handbooks that 80% of the general population do not have an equally divided nasal cavity, but not all have the symptoms & it is not a condition to worry about unless it causes: nasal obstruction, snoring, sinusitis, rhinitis & even polyps

1- The surgery can be done under either general or local anaesthesia with sedation, it takes around 60-90 minutes

2- The correction of deviated nasal septum is called septoplasty & in it the septum is reshaped & part of it is excised. The septum should be seperated from the bony structures & then fixed with a splint

3- It should not effect the outer look of the nose unless a septoplasty is combined with rhinoplasty

A deviated nasal septum is corrected only because of medical reasons to improve the function of the nose & relieve the person from the symptoms that are mentioned above, on the other hand the nose job "rhinoplasty" is purely an aesthetic operation for the external look of the nose

However, a very badly deviated septum can effect the external shape of the nose

well done Hitman..
the decision of local or general anaesthesia depends on the:
- age.
- mental status of the patient.
- surgeon preference.

Thanks Hitman, that was very informative!

Fahad, what do you mean by "mental status"?
Do you mean wether the patient is fearful or not, so brave-hearts only can do it under local anesthesia?

Or is it related to the influence of anesthesia on nerves and so?

no no.. it is not about being brave... mental status meant for being mentally normal or retarded.
