The Italian Football Federation have assigned the 2005-06 Scudetto to Inter in the aftermath of the Calciopoli verdicts.
The Nerazzurri were being tipped to be crowned Campioni d’Italia and confirmation arrived last night after FIGC chief Guido Rossi appointed a three-member panel to decide on the destination of last term’s League crown.
Last season’s championship was won on the pitch by Juventus, but the Turin team were stripped of their 2004-05 and 2005-06 successes after being found guilty of sporting fraud. Milan came second, but were also punished as part of the probe.
Inter chief Massimo Moratti had publicly demanded that his side be awarded the championship and his desires have been met.
“I am pleased with the decision to award the title to the club and to the team who behaved correctly,” said Moratti.
The three-man panel was formed by Gerhard Aigner, former UEFA General Secretary, Massimo Coccia and Roberto Pardolesi, both experts on sport law.
They wrapped up their work quickly and submitted the final report to Rossi at the end of last week.
In a note, Rossi explained that the title was assigned to Inter because they were the highest ranking team in the standings that had not been punished in the match-fixing case.
As a result of the decision, the Nerazzurri have won their first Scudetto since 1989 and their 14th in total.
President Giacinto Facchetti added: “This is the Scudetto of honesty and fair play, won by a team that showed its technical and mental strength.
“Italian football has decided to focus on the moral aspect, therefore I believe this title has a double meaning.”
Coach Roberto Mancini is also satisfied with the FIGC verdict. “We are very happy, we deserved to wear the Scudetto on our jerseys,” he said.
“We all know it is better to win on the pitch, but this title will represent a motivation for the season we are about to begin.”
No special celebrations are being organised for the event, neither in Brunico, the team’s pre-season training location, nor in Milan.
The FIGC have also decided that the 2004-05 Serie A title will remain unassigned after it was revoked from the Old Lady.
