The Italian Football Federation have assigned the 2005-06 Scudetto to Inter in the aftermath of the Calciopoli verdicts.

The Nerazzurri were being tipped to be crowned Campioni d’Italia and confirmation arrived last night after FIGC chief Guido Rossi appointed a three-member panel to decide on the destination of last term’s League crown.

Last season’s championship was won on the pitch by Juventus, but the Turin team were stripped of their 2004-05 and 2005-06 successes after being found guilty of sporting fraud. Milan came second, but were also punished as part of the probe.

Inter chief Massimo Moratti had publicly demanded that his side be awarded the championship and his desires have been met.

“I am pleased with the decision to award the title to the club and to the team who behaved correctly,” said Moratti.

The three-man panel was formed by Gerhard Aigner, former UEFA General Secretary, Massimo Coccia and Roberto Pardolesi, both experts on sport law.

They wrapped up their work quickly and submitted the final report to Rossi at the end of last week.

In a note, Rossi explained that the title was assigned to Inter because they were the highest ranking team in the standings that had not been punished in the match-fixing case.

As a result of the decision, the Nerazzurri have won their first Scudetto since 1989 and their 14th in total.

President Giacinto Facchetti added: “This is the Scudetto of honesty and fair play, won by a team that showed its technical and mental strength.

“Italian football has decided to focus on the moral aspect, therefore I believe this title has a double meaning.”

Coach Roberto Mancini is also satisfied with the FIGC verdict. “We are very happy, we deserved to wear the Scudetto on our jerseys,” he said.

“We all know it is better to win on the pitch, but this title will represent a motivation for the season we are about to begin.”

No special celebrations are being organised for the event, neither in Brunico, the team’s pre-season training location, nor in Milan.

The FIGC have also decided that the 2004-05 Serie A title will remain unassigned after it was revoked from the Old Lady.

The last time they actually won was back in 1989. Lol.

Inter are today celebrating their first Scudetto since 1989 with Nerazzurri players eager to express their joy for what they consider as a well-deserved success.

Owner Massimo Moratti and President Giacinto Facchetti had already stated their satisfaction on Wednesday evening, unanimously rejecting the idea that the title was a present after the Calciopoli verdicts.

“This was not a gift, we have always played fair and this is the prize we deserve for our behaviour,” said Moratti in an interview with daily newspaper La Stampa.

“We are proud of the title and see no reason whatsoever not to wear the Scudetto next season.”

Moratti has thus confirmed that the famous tricolore shield will be added to the club’s jerseys for the 2006-07 campaign after Juventus and Milan were penalised for sporting fraud.

Italian World Cup winner Marco Materazzi was also enthusiastic about the club’s belated triumph.

“I want to wear the Scudetto, Coppa Italia and World Cup symbols all together on my jersey,” he said. “And I would wear them with pride.”

Captain Javier Zanetti joined his teammate in celebrating Inter’s 14th title after years of disappointment at the San Siro.

“We are all very happy and believe we deserve this,” stated the Argentine. “This club has always shown its real value, all around the world, and we are proud of being part of it.”

Sinisa Mihajlovic, Mancini’s assistant and a former Inter player, shared his fellow team members’ opinions, but was also very critical of the clubs involved in the scandal.

“Awarding Inter the title was the right thing to do, we deserved it and fought for it on the pitch,” said the ex-Lazio, Roma and Sampdoria star.

“The appeal verdict confirmed that some teams did not play fair in the past years and that explains why Inter wasn’t able to win any important trophy,” added former defender.

No official celebrations are being planned for the event, but Moratti insists that fact should not be misinterpreted.

“There is nothing to feel ashamed of, but only many reasons to feel proud of this achievement,” the oil tycoon concluded.

I'd be ashamed if my team were given a title like that. If Inter's board had any class, they would have refused it. Why accept something you didn't earn/deserve? Shows how low these clowns will go...

It's going to be oh so much sweeter once we catch up the 8 pts gap and win the scudetto this year. That'll be so sweet that it's going to make Interisti shut up for the entire up-coming century! As Galliani said, by December, the gap will be made and I can bet that by the end of October, those losers will start sh.itting in their pants seeing us coming straight at them...

Once losers, always losers...Always and Forever.

“The Scudetto is a life-time achievement award for [Inter owner] Massimo Moratti.”

The scudetto patch, looks funny and weird on inter.

when the Calciopoli was first reported, some people suggested the title be given to Milan.

And Il Capitano Paolo Maldini straight said, no, we are not interested.

if you are a rich man and somebody offers you a Porsche you might say "thanks m8,but i have a lot of them in my garage".if you are a poor man and you are offered a Porsche you will take it without any hesitation.

Thats the difference between AC Milan and Inter ;)

One thing I know, next season, the patch wont be on a blueblack jersey (the irony is that the jersey is not blue black, its navy blue and blue!)
