View Full Version : NO 2 abaya.... is it time??
lillies 14-07-06, 04:43 PM ok so we live in a country were the abaya is considered the dress code. ofcourse im not generalizing BUT to be honest the majority of the community expect you to wear it sooner or later.
im here to say i think its about time omani women start dressing normally. dont get me wrong im not asking for the scarf to go. just the stupid black cloth.
what i wanna know is how many of you agree or disagree?
is it time we gave up the abaya and start dressing in color??? or not?
*FaLLiNG STaR* 14-07-06, 05:00 PM We're not obliged to wear abbaya's here, it's a personal choice. So many of us choose to wear it by themselves. I personally have no problem with it, as it covers you perfectly & it's practical for you if you were in a rush & it looks very elegent. So I don't think I ever want to ditch the abbaya.
I'm in a phase where I don't like the Abaya very much, so I wear normal outfits with the hijab. However, sometimes, I feel inclined to wear the Abaya depending on the place I'm going to, where I would feel uncomfortable if I didn't wear it like governmental buildings, funerals and hospitals. Abayas can be very convenient at times, I will never ditch it completely, but I reckon, I'll wear it less and less as days go by.

im here to say i think its about time omani women start dressing normally.
You mean being dressed in an abaya is abnormal?
I hope you wont say that one day about my favourite wizaar :lift:
NiGhTFaCe 14-07-06, 05:12 PM What is the purpose of girls/ladies wearing Abaya?!
FaRaSHa 14-07-06, 05:15 PM ....I don't know which socity you are talking about, but for sure if you are in Muscat, i don't think that nowdays female wear only Abaya.......
.....Many do wear colourful dress and some wear too flashy ones tooo.....:mmhmm:
.....So i don't think what you are trying to refer too does excist.....
......Wearing abay in Oman is not a law but a choice or an obligation by the family..........
........I am not attacking you in here, but i think the way that the socity is now, it needs to have more restriction in how to make an abbaya....for the orginal aim of the abaya is to cover up the body and not show the lady's figure......but what we see now days is going against the orginal aim, the only thing common between the abbaya in the past and the present is the colour.....
........Plus abbaya has many useful things when you wear it....
.....my final point, NO i am not with you to set a time to say goodbye to abbayas............:)
amo_l_oman 14-07-06, 06:13 PM Dunno if is the face or too many colors of dress and scarf, but that's the first thing they ask
Dsnt come to their mind am Muslim cause am fully covered, they ask which country am from
Therefore i came to the conclusion to be Omani [5alfanooh dnt jump on me :D ] or Muslim, one must wear abbaya, which i'll do one day knowing myself but actually no
i tried wearing a black design arabic dress, but black is depressing really so i don't think i'll do for the time being
am happy with colors
I personally think women should have a better variety when it comes to clothing. I don't see why they can;t wear thing other than Abaya as long as it does not compromise the Islamic rulings regarding Women's clothing.
In fact, don't you think Women have already started changing? There are so many new styles in Abayas now that one can't really get bored.
MorphaKnight 14-07-06, 06:23 PM nananananananana BATMAN!! unite with your batman abayas!
ToomuchaT 14-07-06, 06:54 PM what i wanna know is how many of you agree or disagree?
is it time we gave up the abaya and start dressing in color??? or not?
.. u know. it's an interesting topic.. but before i start i would like to know how old r u?? *keep the stupid i dead of women dont liked to be asked abt their age for a moment plz*
.. thnx :)
Yeah baby!! :mushroom:
For whoever wants to wear it thats cool and I respect that. For those who want more color and variety; I'm with you!
I had never planned to wear the abaya forever, I knew eventually I would swap it for conservative shirts & skirts/pants.
While its verrry convenient and beautiful as well, I don't see the need for having to wear it all the time, everytime you go out. Stuff like what LYM said, govt things and such that sounds appropriate to wear abaya. Otherwise not so much.
And at the end of the day, each to her own.
Libellula 14-07-06, 07:42 PM I personally don't like the Abaya very much so I don't wear it on a daily basis.
My reasons are as follows:
~ It's too hot, esp in the summer/during the day. I'd rather wear something made of cotton.
~ Because it's black, if you get dust on it, it really stands out.
~ Black every day is depressing. I like variety.
~ I don't want to look like every other female in the country.
~ I am creative and I like dressing up.
I haven't ditched it completely. I do wear it sometimes at night when I feel like it, or if I'm going somewhere and it'd be respectful of me to wear it (eg hospital, ministries, etc).
It can be convenient sometimes, like when you just woke up in the morning and find yourself craving McDonalds for breakfast but you're not bothered to change out of your PJs. Just throw an Abaya on, go to the Drive Thru, and get back into bed with your food. :D
Solidus 14-07-06, 07:47 PM I personaly like the abaya, it looks really nice on a chick, but wearing it with make up makes it look bad.. As some say, people nowadays can wear whatever they want..
Plus the full abaya and the ninja costume looks cool..

Dam3eti 14-07-06, 10:41 PM What a topic lol.
I personnaly like the 3abaya and wouldn't ditch it. I don't wear it only because its respectful etc, but I actually like it and feel comfortable wearing one. There are many beautiful designs that can make your 3abaya unique then others.
I disagree with Farasha about having restrictions with wearing a abaya. The orginal abaya is the one that goes over your head..do you want us girls wearing that? I think theres nothing wrong with choosing your own designs and for whatever purpose it is.
FaRaSHa 14-07-06, 10:49 PM I disagree with Farasha about having restrictions with wearing a abaya. The orginal abaya is the one that goes over your head..do you want us girls wearing that? I think theres nothing wrong with choosing your own designs and for whatever purpose it is.
...I am not saying that you have to have the abbay with th hood.....LOL...i myself would not wear it....:XD:
...I am saying that many girls now days make their abbaya in a way that does not suit the actual purpose of having the abbaya.....
.....abbaya meant to cover your body and not to show the exact figure, though i am not saying that you have to wear it as if you are wearing a tent.....
....but what ia m saying, at least have the abbay in your own design or patern, but within the Islamic requirment, not as loose as a tent and not as fit as a swimming suit........:alien: :color:
......any way every one have their own choice and no one is obliged to any thing....and its nice to see colours spreaded in the air.......
......Though i recall when i was little many ladies used to wear lots of colours, either they are wearing the Omani dress or wearin normal maxi and la7af......
.....its only recently ladies are wearing more black but a styled black, its like a trend that every one has to follow even if they were not much into liking it but its a fashion.....:eh:
FluidNutria 15-07-06, 12:11 AM I agree with Dam3eti.I like abbaya's cuz i think its makes a woman look "aneeqa", with all the pretty designs and all. But then again i'd ditch it if i was going out in the morning for the same reasons as Libellula.
FluidNutria 15-07-06, 12:14 AM oh ya, and i dont think theres such thing as "no to abbaya its time to go", everyone can wear whatever they wish to wear.
ToomuchaT 15-07-06, 12:28 AM .. FarashaH .. 10/10 :)
Pearly Eyes 15-07-06, 12:30 AM I like abayah, its feminine, decent and its part of our heritage
I only leave it when I travel abroad, but when I'm in my UAE, I wont go anywhere without it, even if it's hot, it's cool indoors ...
I am planning to start a new trend of wearing black wizaars :)
I certainly wouldn't mind seeing more COLOR when I go out. Everyone in the gulf is either wearing white (men) or black (women) so it's getting rather dull and boring if you ask me. I am all for the abaya when it comes to very crowded and public places (hospitals , govermental buildings and so on) but to wear it all the time and every single place you go even the SUPERMARKET then thats just too much in my opinion.
MorphaKnight 15-07-06, 12:37 AM wtf you guys don't have home delivery in mcdonalds?? 0_o
whoo hoo! Egypt is once again triumphant over the gulf!
If I ever travel to the gulf and have my wife wearing the 3abaya, suppose she goes to the mall and I can't find her... good God it'd be like a real life version of where's waldo! :p
eL3yo0oN 15-07-06, 01:04 AM i dont mind wearing abaya at all because its comfortable and you wouldnt have to wake up every morning and look for something nice to wear :cute: and NaBHaN i'm not bothered to change just to go to the supermarket so i just wear the abaya and jalabiyah under it :p
The P!an!st 15-07-06, 01:24 AM what i wanna know is how many of you agree or disagree?
I totally agree that abaya is the worst thing ever in your country :D. for me it is a symbol of * NOTHiNG * as I recall we didnt see lots of abbayas on teenagers be4 5 years maybe !! only "ladies " had it on.... now days I see grade 4 girls wearing it !!!!!!!!! sometimes people give bad comments to girl not wearing abbaya even if there clothes are not tight while they say nothing about girls wearing the tightest abbaya ever :S .
is it time we gave up the abaya and start dressing in color??? or not
SURE IT IS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Libellula 15-07-06, 01:25 AM ...I am saying that many girls now days make their abbaya in a way that does not suit the actual purpose of having the abbaya.....
.....abbaya meant to cover your body and not to show the exact figure, though i am not saying that you have to wear it as if you are wearing a tent.....

I think that the style of the Abaya, like all other clothing garments depends on personal preference. It's no longer seen as a garment used to cover up according to Islamic rules. Just like you can either have a loose skirt, or a tight skirt, you can have a fitted Abaya or a loose one.
I don't think that people should say, either wear a loose Abaya that is acceptable Islamically or don't wear it at all. Nowadays the Abaya has become a fashion trend, and I see nothing wrong with that.
Every girl herself can choose to either wear it because she thinks it covers her up better than other clothes, or because she wants to dress according to the current trends.
A while ago, I was out with some friends, and they aren't mut7ajbat (don't cover their hair), but they do wear the Abaya. Usually they wear it, but they have their hair down. Anyway, we were in a public place and we passed by this guy, who said, "Abaya without scarf.. what's the point?"
The point I'm trying to make by using this as an example, is that the Abaya is a clothing item, nothing more. I don't think it's right when people say that a tight Abaya defeats the purpose or an Abaya without scarf is pointless. The Abaya isn't an Islamic dress code, but merely a piece of clothing that can be tailored according to your preference and worn however you want.
Persian Queen 15-07-06, 02:33 AM here is my list
1) i will not wear abbya for the sake of showing off nad dis beleive in it
2) if i weared one i would prefar ifit is balck & only balck no design and etc this is quite weiord coz im into colors and life but not to attract and go to malls and deeply inside i know i better off with out it after all full of shocking colors and design ...
3) deepend in my mood if i don't want it thate mean no wayz won't wear it beside when i go to visit my relatives i don't care a shit of wearing it .
4) i don't like it i started to wear it nearly in age of 18 years old after all if my dress don't show any details i don't wear the bat women in balck cloth
Tiny Heart 15-07-06, 03:09 AM I dont c anything wrong with wearing 3baiya!!
Though I dont wear it 24/7...
Mostly I'd wear when I dont know what 2 wear or have no time 2 iron my cloths :p
I wear 3biya daily 2 work, as I have no time every morning 2 sit hours just 2 figure what 2 wear @ work... its just comfortable... specialy at summer, I always wear skirts, sleevless underneth a kinda soft 3biya that isnt transparent...
BUt when I go out, then that depends on the place am goung 2, the people am gonna hang around with....
I like being colorful, sometime...
Superbia 15-07-06, 03:20 AM i personally stop wearing it completely .. besdies in Oman's heat i dont think its suitble to wear 3abay for gods sake its BLACK .. !!! besides wt sthe harm if we wear respectble but without any 3abaya .. its more of a tradition than a religion thing so i say NO FOR 3ABAYA !!!!
lol... i honestly dont get wut the big deal is :) i never noticed tht the community here "expects" a woman 2 wear the 3abaya permenantly @ some point! i mean i c women everywhere dressed up decently with no 3abaya & no1 seems 2 object. take the workplace 4 example, some woman choose 2 go their in 3abaya cuz its wut they'r personally comfortable with, it's not the dress code or anything, & there r others who where the average work clothes & no1 seems 2 mind, right? personally i find 3abayas very convenient & can look real elegant :) i dont wear it all the time, only whenever i want 2, so i dont get it, y should there be a time 2 ditch it? cant u just wear wut u wanna where whenever u wanna wear it (as long as u respect the atmosphere :) )?
good God it'd be like a real life version of where's waldo! :p
isnt it "where's wally?" (i used 2 be a fan as a kid, i have all his books & a few badges 2 :))
wow.....when I was in Oman, I thought the traditional clothing of Omanis was so cool looking.......if that changes it won't be interesting at all to the girls and guys all dressed up in jeans and t-shirts.......for me anyway.
But for sure.....I prefer my present underwear set up.....compared to that wrap around cloth thing........for the guys......
Here in Japan, they use to wear kimono.......but now of course not so much.....it's really cool to see the traditional dress.......
In a way......the old styles are very interesting in comparison to these days of Gap stores fashion.

ToomuchaT 15-07-06, 03:59 AM .. lol.. the funny thing that some ppl are trying to protest against the french abbaya.. but here we have a BIGGER probleemo^O!! .. no abbaya weee terrible :o
.. anyway.. personally i think the MUSLIM lady outfit is acceptable if and only if achieve both of the following:
1. covering, apart from the hands and the face.
2. not stiring up the attention nor the attraction!! (i.e acceptable loosness not tight, seductive colours etc )
.. anyway.. the way a person (not just ladies) dresses.. is a message about his/er golden personality!
if what u r wearing is decent then no need for 3abaya.. i don't wear 3abaya!
it annoys me that girls wear it just coz they are expected to
Acid Fairy 15-07-06, 05:16 AM Personally, I like wearing abbaya most of the time when I'm in Oman. It's more convenient and it looks elegant on a girl. Plus it hides alot of flaws.
Wearing an abbaya is a personal choice, a girl is not forced to wear it so whomever is uncomfortable with it shouldn't wear it.
Libellula 15-07-06, 09:40 PM 2. not stiring up the attention nor the attraction!! (i.e acceptable loosness not tight, seductive colours etc )
What do you mean by "seductive" colours?
lillies 15-07-06, 09:53 PM you guys are saying no one is forcing you to wear it. plz look at how ppl stare when your not wearing abaya!! this community thinks its the proper thing to do and thats a fact
true you dress as you want but i see alot of disrespect for those who dont wear abaya.
lillies 15-07-06, 10:00 PM .. u know. it's an interesting topic.. but before i start i would like to know how old r u?? *keep the stupid i dead of women dont liked to be asked abt their age for a moment plz*
.. thnx :)
less than 25 more than 20
arabian bella 15-07-06, 10:28 PM When I first travelled to Dubai and saw the way women wore there abayas, it actually amazed me. I actually loved the look but I honestly wouldnt wear it in Australia. In Australia most women/girls that cover either wear normal clothes and try to cover as much as possible. Others wore in my opinion ugly, daggy abayas that makes a woman/girl look much older.
I had bought 1 abaya for myself from Dubai because I felt that it was a much better look, that made a woman look sophisticated and presentable.
I dont actually wear the hijab for personal reasons but I needed the abaya to wear for the times I attended the mosque, or if a shiekh was coming to my parents house, a death.... However my sista wears the hijab and from her experience in trying to look good in her hijab and be in fashion with the rest of the world, it was quite difficult for her to dress presentably and fashionable because in Australia it doesnt quite cater clothing for the modern.
I moved to Qatar and the first mission for me was to buy 10 abayas for my sista; each 1 with a unique design and great colours that would lift her spirit everyday while she is wearing her hijab...I sent them to Australia & when she had received them she tried on each 1 and was indecisive about which one to wear.
Each day she would wear a different abaya and as she went out to work, or shopping, she was getting positive coments from many different people. Which lifted her self esteem with her hijab and her abayas inspired many other women to dress like her.
The abaya is a beautiful ornament, it makes a woman look like a real lady. It brings respect and dignity for the woman, it brings out the beauty in a woman. The abaya is classy and simple. Black is the perfect color, it hides unwanted curves, it makes u look slim and although it is a depressing color but you can add colorful unique designs which brings out the exquisite look of the abaya. The abaya may be hot to wear sometimes but jeans, shirts or any clothing are not any cooler. U may find the abaya as a normal garment but coming from a western country, I CHERISH the abaya:heart:
Superbia 15-07-06, 10:45 PM ^^ but i disagree with the color coz in the middle east its very hott ... which makes it evn difficult !!
Arabian Princess 16-07-06, 12:55 AM I love the Abaya, I wear it because its what acceptable for a respected girl in my community to wear and also because I love it .. its convienet and easy ..
My mother started wearing colorful abayas lately because my father asked her to. He hates the color black. She makes them the same styles as normal abbaya but in color .. I think they look good, but I dont think I would dare to wear them .. I still prepfer my black with design Abayas :)

Ooh, that sounds interesting. I'd like to see that!
I haven't seen anyone wearing a coloured Abaya. I imagine it's just like the usual black Abaya, but it's coloured...? What sort of colours though?
Superbia 16-07-06, 01:06 AM wow colored .. interesting..
amo_l_oman 16-07-06, 01:22 AM I love the Abaya, I wear it because its what acceptable for a respected girl in my community to wear and also because I love it .. its convienet and easy ..
so a girl not wearing it in your community is not respectable ?
Which community anyway, if i may ask ?
Fdaitny 16-07-06, 01:57 AM I personally feel naked without my abaya! Except when I'm travelling, that may feel different for me, but I still take my abaya, just in case. I actually do end up wearing it at times. But here, in the Arabian Gulf, I can't live without one!! I also adore the fact that I can make pretty abayas that suit my personality and style. I remember when I was in elementary, I loved the idea of wearing an abaya. When I first got mine, we were inseperable, then I disliked it, so I wore it without the sheila (scarf), just placed it around my neck. Now, al hamdella, I wear it everywhere! :D I love it.
what i wanna know is how many of you agree or disagree?
is it time we gave up the abaya and start dressing in color??? or not?
You Don't have to wear anything....color make u cooler...:bored:
Superbia 16-07-06, 10:41 AM ^^ true .....
Arabian Princess 16-07-06, 10:56 AM Amo, my husband's family, my direct family .. yes, they would think I went nut if I stepped out of the house without an Abaya!
Libby, she did it with grey color. beige color ..and Maroon
Fdaitny 16-07-06, 12:33 PM By the way, I don't think one can totally ditch one's abaya if they got used to it. It's your friend during a crisis. :)
I like abayah, its feminine, decent and its part of our heritage
I only leave it when I travel abroad, but when I'm in my UAE, I wont go anywhere without it, even if it's hot, it's cool indoors ...
You are my girl..:)
tell them the Important being traditional and keeping the Culture intact...
being too moderate its dangerous in many ways:cool:
Superbia 16-07-06, 02:16 PM a77 wt evr i dont think girls who dont wear abayas make them any less respectble .. besides i wonder in ayam ra9ool do u think ppl wore abayas ?!?!?
Arabian Princess 16-07-06, 02:49 PM JUVE'ntiniya, every community or enviroment has its rules .. in some families it is considered very irespectable not to wear abaya some dont .. I know that its not islamicly required to wear Abaya .. but social restrictions are also important ..
Superbia 16-07-06, 02:58 PM ^^^ well basicallu 3abaya is a tradition thing NOT religion therefore its not a must and bo lady shud b forced 2 wear it FULL STOP .
Arabian Princess 16-07-06, 03:02 PM No one said its a religious thing, but when you live in a community you have to follow its tradition .. unless you want to rebel then its up to you but you will also have to bear the consequences!!
I admit that in my surrounding enviroment its not acceptable not to wear Abaya, and I am willing to follow that because I love the Abaya .. that what I was simply saying!!
Angel_Eyes 16-07-06, 03:07 PM ok so we live in a country were the abaya is considered the dress code. ofcourse im not generalizing BUT to be honest the majority of the community expect you to wear it sooner or later.

well, i certainly DON'T agree with that:mmhmm: ...women don't wear it because they want to,they wear it because Allah said to dress modestly. It's for our own good dear. Pretty soon, are people gonna say ," is it time for the scarf to go?" then next, "is it time for clothes to be shorter and tighter?" then, "is it really necessary to wear clothes at all?" ....then.."what's wrong with a thong bakini?"...do you see the work of the devil? it's a chain reaction that's starts with a small step in the wrong direction. Here's an aritcle that i'd like to share with all........please read carefully and with an open mind..
Title:A’SHATAAN WHISPERS IN THE EARS OF TODAY’S YOUNG GIRLS
A’Shataan whispers….
‘You really don’t have to cover your hair? After all, times have changed. These days you can feel free to dress however you want. Covering your hair is old-fashioned. It’s time for the Arab world to catch up with the rest of the world - the hajab is a thing of the past. Don’t you want to be a modern woman?’
A’Shataan whispers….
‘The lahaf/hajab is uncomfortable to wear, especially in hot weather. Why should you have to suffer in the heat and be uncomfortable just because men are around? It’s certainly not your fault if men have bad thoughts when they see you uncovered. You aren’t responsible for men looking at you in a lustful way.
A’Shataan whispers….
‘There are so many Muslim women who don’t wear a lahaf, and there’s nothing wrong with that. It’s really no big deal anymore whether you wear it or not. These days women have the choice to cover their hair or to be a more moderate Muslim and not wear a lahaf. It’s simply a matter of choice and whatever suits you.’
Shataan whispers….
‘If you don’t cover your hair it doesn’t mean that you’re a bad person. It what’s inside a person that matters, not what your wearing on the outside. Just because you don’t cover your hair doesn’t mean you’re less of a Muslim.’
A’Shataan whispers….
‘Your hair is not something to be ashamed of – it’s only hair. You should be proud of your hair and show it off. What’s the point of getting your hair styled if people can’t even see it? If you spend that much on your hair at the salon at least make it worth it by letting people see it. Besides, the lahaf ruins the hair-style.’
A’Shataan whispers….
‘Life would be so much easier if you didn’t have to cover your hair every time you left the house. Just think of how free you would feel. Women who don’t wear a lahaf/hajab are really lucky to be able to enjoy such freedom. Just imagine how comfortable it would be and how much cooler, too!’
A’Shataan whispers….
‘Don’t be afraid to stand up for what you want – if you don’t want to cover your hair, you should’t have to. Don’t let society, or your family, or your religion tell you how to live. You should be brave and do what you want. If religious people look down on you for it, ignore them – you shouldn’t care what anyone thinks about you.’
A’Shataan is very clever and he’s an expert at making the wrong seem right and right things seem wrong. He’s very sneaky in how he gets people to disobey Allah. Young girls…. please don’t become a victim of his deceitful whispers!
X-press 16-07-06, 03:09 PM Abbaya is an additional option to cover what we do not want other to see, but it doesn't represent any religious symbol. If a woman decides not (or never) to wear one, we should not view her as a bad muslim for that. Abbaya is a personal choice, not an obligation...
Superbia 16-07-06, 03:18 PM ^^ i totally second that :)
X-press 16-07-06, 03:19 PM Arabian Princess, I think it is great for your mum to wear color abbayas and I bet you every women in Oman would wear them if it was the fashion. The shops just need to start selling them and have several young ladies wearing them and maybe very few will go back to the black.
I am very much in favor of colored abbayas if they are beautiful and seeing how trending is the new generation, I have no doubt that this style will come in due time :)
X-press 16-07-06, 03:57 PM I certainly wouldn't mind seeing more COLOR when I go out. Everyone in the gulf is either wearing white (men) or black (women)....Nabhy, based on what you said, what about us opening an abbaya competition thread, where for fun we can ask the Sabla ladies to try to create one colored abbaya for a change? We can give 2 months or a certain time to have it done and displayed here :) Who knows we might lauch a new fashion....:flower:
Does anyone know that really cool abaya shop called "Kawashi" or something like that?
The owner is an Omani lady who won lots of awards for her colorful abaya designs........
sayid fatak
Pearly Eyes 16-07-06, 04:30 PM If we took it from an Islamic point view, the right way to cover is to wear he abayah the from the head and that does not embody the shoulders, and the true reason that Abayah is black coz it wont attract attention, this the right way to wear one, it does not have to abayah it can be any type of covering. It's not about being unique, coz women can be unique in their homes for their families and places that only women. I know that now we mostly don't do this, we wear colored and suited. But abaya is not an out of style dress, it’s a tradition wear that is made to cover us, and we should respect it, it part if who we are and what will we be. and taking it off, means that we are willing let go our background ...
Libellula 16-07-06, 05:00 PM JUVE'ntiniya, every community or enviroment has its rules .. in some families it is considered very irespectable not to wear abaya some dont .. I know that its not islamicly required to wear Abaya .. but social restrictions are also important ..
I guess it's the family's view that is more important than society as a whole.
There was a time when I'd wear the Abaya all the time and my mum and aunts would actually tell me off and tell me to stop wearing it. My mother hardly ever wears the Abaya, and so when I wear it she's always complaining that I should take it off. Same goes for my aunts. They do want to see me dressed respectably, but then they have different ideas of what is respectable and what isn't. They'd rather see me in a skirt and a shirt instead.
I think that as long as your family approves of the way you dress, then you don't need to worry about everyone else in the society.
ToomuchaT 16-07-06, 05:08 PM What do you mean by "seductive" colours?
.. u know those glittering flashing colours n most that the girl would wear them to look as an 'eye catcher' .. rather than to look good n covered!
Abbaya is an additional option to cover what we do not want other to see, but it doesn't represent any religious symbol. If a woman decides not (or never) to wear one, we should not view her as a bad muslim for that. Abbaya is a personal choice, not an obligation...
Perhaps you are right X-press.. But as far your outfit are totaly loose and they dont show any shape of your body then and then you may skip Abbaya..:o But unfortunately the same so called Moderate ladies they have modify abbaya so tight and goes along they bosy shape..
I don't think its up to anyone but the woman to decide what she should wear. Its her deen, her life and her choice.
Angel_Eyes 17-07-06, 11:47 AM I agree with u Enigma...and i agree with Pearlyeyes too..................:)
X-press 17-07-06, 12:51 PM Does anyone know that really cool abaya shop called "Kawashi" or something like that?
The owner is an Omani lady who won lots of awards for her colorful abaya designs........Fatak, I have no idea where this shop is located and maybe one of the Sabla ladies can kindly give me some direction here.
Many years back I attended a fashion show where a young Omani designer (forgot her name now) did exhibit the first ever seen colored abbayas in the country. They were (mashallah) extremely beautiful and many made of pastel colored chiffon. Some had some overdone embroideries which I supposed could be modified. After the show I was sure that the ladies would start wearing such style with the refreshing colors presented, but I was surprised that it was never the case.
Angel_Eyes 17-07-06, 12:53 PM x-press,if that's true about that lady designer, then how come i don't see people wearing colored abayas? that would be something new to see!!!!
Yeah i never saw one in real life on any woman, but i remember hearing about it in the TV....
Fdaitny 17-07-06, 04:54 PM A while ago, I saw a pink abaya, and I was begging my mom to get it for me, but she wouldn't, even though she said it was nice. There were other colors too, and they are pretty, but I don't think Oman would wear a new style of abayas if UAE didn't start wearing it first. (My opinion, please don't attack me!) But it would be nice, or amazing, to see Oman starting a new trend! ;)
lillies 17-07-06, 10:34 PM [QUOTE=Arabian Princess]No one said its a religious thing, but when you live in a community you have to follow its tradition ..
btw the abaya is nothing to do with tradition..it was only recently introduced to oman .i mean up to 90's very few wore it ask your parents. its not Omani so i dunoo wat tradition you mean
btw the colored abayas that were introduced a few years back were pretty but no one accepted the idea then i doubt things have changed
sunmoon 06-10-06, 08:29 PM I think it's a good to have in my closet! There are places where a lady can't go to wearing what she'll wear when she's at home!
I started wearing abya recently and I feel very comfortable wearing it plus I love the new designes!
I do wear dresses and shiny night stuff but that's only when I go to some party or a wedding! You can't look like someone have died in your sis or bro wedding can you?!
At the end we all do what makes us comfortable and that what makes us responsible infront god! :)
Some girls look sexy in abayas. I personally feel really comfy with my abaya on.

Her name is Kifah Abdwani (spl?) / Kifa7 3abewani. Her shop i think was in Ruwi, near where Muscat Collage used to be, after Star Ceinma. I dont know if its still there or not.
TripleTee 07-10-06, 12:41 PM I'm for more color... dress decent... but with a little color... cuz with all honesty... the black and white sight does bore me out.
only some women are obliged to wear it with some families I believe... still I think those who don't have to should vary.
toxic_honey 10-10-06, 04:19 PM abbay is the best ever!
well its classy and uniqe!
the reason of abbays is to cover the body... i know some would say its black
and its hot!!
why abbays are black!! becoz the color black is the most color
which do not show the relief of a women body if she wear anything
with the color black!
Thats why some poeple say wearing black make u look slimmer!! :os
(btw am not talking about thight black clothes and abayas)
so dont tell me u dont wear black at all!! or u dont have something
on black!
and about the hot thing! now do you want to tell me that most girls
go under the sun and walk like that!
well No! most places are closed and got ACs (like malls) * which most girls go there*
anyways... abbays is something of our gulf folklore...
so why would i say NO to it! which mean we r denline it!
its something sepical about us!
why would we decline!
am not saying that all of the girls should wear it
but why would u say! i wont wear it, just if i dont have something to wear!
if it looks soooo bad i would say..maybe thats a reason!
but if the reason was about the color or feeling hot waering it!
plz! there r some girls who do wear tones of clothes to look ((pretty and to chatch eyes)) and in that spot they DONT feel hot :os!
.... to me abbays are something i wear it proudly
coz i wont be shamed of something that make us sepcial ;)
ps: i wear abbaya and walk to my uni and btw i dont get hot!
u know why..coz its not tight so air can get it!
This is such a cool thread to read!
Navigator 10-10-06, 04:48 PM how did abbaya come 1st to oman ?
toxic_honey 10-10-06, 04:50 PM u tell me?
Navigator 10-10-06, 04:54 PM i dont know ...thatz why am askin'
Rossonero 10-10-06, 04:54 PM No to abaya?
If i was a girl..i'd rather commit suicide
Black Lolly 10-10-06, 05:46 PM ^ why?!
abaya is veeery comfy, i dont think im ever going to leave it,,i sometimes dont wear abaya when its hot or when im going to the beach to excersise, orrr when i feel like being stylish =P
but i dont wanna ditch my abaya, i remember the first time i wore it, w0w i didnt have to worry about anything y5o9 my style..
I love the abaya/sheela look, it's just a so bite me look.
fatamooo 10-10-06, 06:25 PM bite me??? what the... lol!!
I dont know about you guys, but having to worry about my clothes matching or not has become really really tiring :p If I were still in Oman, I could wear an orange striped shirt, bright purple skirt, and a abaya on top and no one would give a damn!! well cos they wouldn't know obviously, and that's the BEST thing about abaya. Obviously there are other good reasons for it as well, but for me that's the most important :p
5alfanooh 10-10-06, 06:51 PM ^^ What a reason! lol
The P!an!st 10-10-06, 09:13 PM in future I would really like to marry a guy who careless about this ******** !! 3abayas !! a9lan omani people never wore abayas !! how did it become a part of our traditions ?
Mystique 18-10-06, 03:15 PM the problem with not wearing 3abaya in oman is feeling like an outsider..
i wear the scarf.. but i don't wear the 3abaya except occassionally.. and whenever i don't i feel people staring at me no matter what i am wearing.. they probably think i am not an omani but when they see my husband next to me u can see the confusion in their eyes.. i don't care.. but sometimes it can be a discomfort.
Rossonero 18-10-06, 03:28 PM As long as you are wearing decent unrevealing clothes, thats all that matters. Dont care what others say, as long as you're comfortable its alright.
Some dont wear abayas at work, but do so when they go out..
