being easily tempted by delicious fatty foods.. too much advertising in it will strenthen the temptation.

It might be blamed on the parents, for not setting up a nutirious diet for their children, or cooking too many fried high calorie food at home.

MorphaKnight

not only that, but 3rd world countries believe that stuffing your children with food is a good thing.. how they complain that being skinny isn't good and that you're considered an impolite guest when you refuse to eat more. its crazy.

Though MorphaKnight you can't really blame the parents, anoerxia and bulimia is very frequent nowadays. parents probably fear these illnesses for their children

MorphaKnight

but see anorexia and bullimia doesn't come from the people themselves, it comes from advice from their peers where they say if you want a better body you should not eat.. that way guys will like you...bleugh

I think you should blame it on the silly media! :mmhmm: (btw, I'm a media lit. nerd! :)) It's all about their nonsense (advertising) that people are like that. :yell: They "control" lives now!!!

it does seem to have both a hereditry and diet cause. it think it can be fixed by drugs, and dieting.

Obesity is caused because of one or more of these reasons:

+ Heredity
+ Gigantic Appetite
+ Laziness
+ The food's quality
+ Food Advertising
+ Psychological reasons, like the people who tend to eat more when depressed.

Hello..

Well, the question here: Obesity and who's to blame?! who you think is responsible for this?

No need to blame anyone...we have to blame ourslves before blaming another side,...

just Stop eating Junk Food...that's all

"Obesity and Who's to blame"
i have come across to this title before... might be one of "George Bray" books on obesity science.

Scientists over the last 50 years are still in a dilemma on whom to blame : the genes or environment. this discussion was held in Vancouver 2005 and it will be discussed again in Sydney, 2006 (www.ico2006.com).

Scientists from Texas shown that almost 35-50% of obesity is gene-related using special genetic tests. However, childhood obesity is more toward a gene-related disease.
the puzzle about genetics is that many genes have been discovered to be related to obesity. However, the connection between these genes is difficult. one of the interesting pathway is the endogenous cannabinoid system which enhances obesity.

on the other hand, studies showed that even if the individual is susceptible to obesity , he can remain fit by modifying his diet and physical activity.

Thnks everyone, and thanks fahad:) even though I read alot about those things, I didn't know about what you said.

I, personally, blame the person him/herself.

Not always.. it has to do with ur metabolism rate how fast you burn, i know girls who barely eat but our still not skinny.. or ones that eat healthy food with occasional snacks like me.. and are still not skinny! one of my friends eats n eat n eats all day, chocolate etc.. but man she's as skinny as a model mashallah.. does she do nethin different from the other girls? no. she just burns faster.. there are also other examples.. but too sleep to bring out.

FaHaD explained it very well regarding the relation between obesity & genes

We already know that lifestyle plays a mojr role, even if the genetic factor is present, obesity can still be prevented by lifestyle modifications & regular exercise, as already mentioned by FaHaD

Monkiette, you are right about the metabolism of each individual being different, but you should know that being overweight & being obese are two different things

for the children they have to be under thier parents supervision n they have to take care of thier childern health n kind of food they r consuming
but for adults i think they r grown enuogh to take care of thier selves n thier health but some times it's not about food it's inherted

Obesity and who's to blame?! who you think is responsible for this?

when it comes to children..parents should be held responsible for their kids obesity...

when it comes to adults i guess everyone knows what's best for them..

but there is still some things people can't control like their genes or how fast they burn..

as an obese I say:

I dont think we should blame anyone .. the person him/her self are the ones suffering from it and know exactly that its not good for them .. but is it controllable? not always ..

its very easy for a person who eats 2 big scopes of ice cream and never get fat to start blaming a person who doesnt eat but still get fat!

I think if we gave obese people a break and let them realise by themselves that they need to loose weight .. it would be less stressful for them .. instead of the media and the whole world are doing, they are just making the lives of obese people a nightmare!!!

Arabian Princess, it is a growing profit making industry & the overweights are the victims, so many products to help them lose weight, they will do anything to achieve their goals

I personally think that it is the individual's own fault.

Unless the person is a child, then I would blame it on the parents, because as parents, it's your role to take care of your children - and this includes making sure that they have a healthy nutiritious diet, get plently of exercise and are active.

After a certain age however, or once someone becomes mature, it's their responsibility.

I know that metabolism rates differ from one person to another and some people gain easier than others, but I don't think that can justify being obese. I don't have a lot of sympathy for obese people, unless they had a serious medical condition that lead them to being obese. If I were to generalize however, I think that most obese people are either lazy or have huge appetites and no self control. The way I see it is, if you know you gain weight pretty easily, you should be tougher on yourself and restrict your diet so that you don't get any worse.

I think that obesity should be fought, but not for the same reasons as the media. It's not about looking good. It's mainly about being healthy. It is well known that being obese is quite dangerous and can lead to heart problems. Also, if a person was young and obese, I wonder what they'll be like when they're in their 60s and 70s. I can already see how so many older people gain weight in old age, and they become less active, and remain in their chairs all day. They barely go out, they can't even walk without assistance because of how heavy they've become. I don't think anyone wants to end up that way.

Genes are a factor but once you realise that, you should just control your diet...it requires some work compared to others...but worth doing...

it no one to blame but the obese themsleves, because they is so much health awarness, you cant really blame the advertising companies, because in the end it's the obese themselves you make that decision!
you know another thing i noticed and what is really sad, here in gulf countries the obese rate is tramdously high...

TripleTee

no one but the obese person himself... she/he's the one who's harming his/her body... he/she can choose to eat or not to eat... no one' else's doing it for them...
