Illegal Indians urged to take up 'unique offer'
By Sunil K. Vaidya, Bureau Chief
Muscat: The Indian ambassador to Oman has made a passionate plea to illegals in his community to take advantage of a unique opportunity to leave Oman without paying fines.
In an interview with Gulf News yesterday, Ashok Kumar Attri, said they had approached the Omani government regarding the problem of Indians overstaying after expiry of their visas or labour cards. The authorities have agreed to let them leave without paying fines.
"The Omani government has agreed to process the cases of such Indians to facilitate their early return to India. I am willing to go beyond the call of duty to ensure these stranded people can go home," he said.
He urged people staying here without visas not to miss this opportunity.
"Those who don't avail of this offer will be taking a risk. All penalties and punishments [for overstaying visas] have been completely waived by the government," he said.
The Manpower Ministry has issued an advertisement in the government-owned Arabic daily in which the names of 1,324 Indians have been published with the details of their sponsors, who have been asked to report to the ministry within eight days.
"We have been told that another advertisement will appear on October 30 with 1,900 more names and the rest of the 1,865 names would be published on November 11," Attri said.
He added the list submitted by the ministry in November last year contained the names of 5,089 overstaying Indians.
Attri assured everyone that the mission was working towards clearing the way for every Indian stranded here.
"We want to ensure that those who want to go out, be let out," he said.
He said the embassy would expedite the process to grant exit certificates for those who did not have their passports with them.
The Indian ambassador was confident that once those on the initial list left others would be given a similar chance.
The Indian mission, with the help of volunteers and social workers, is continuing to register Indians staying here

A lot of illegal Indians in the country.
Where do you think all these people go to hide? Why they don't want to leave the country?
