For the first time a web designing competition is held in Oman.

Oman Web Awards was created to recognize excellence in web design and development skills. It is open to all designers or developers, giving them an opportunity to showcase their work.

This event aims at bringing together web design companies, freelancers and web owners in a competition for the ‘Best Website' in each of the designated 22 categories.

Oman's winners will compete with winners from other Arab Countries for the prestigious PAN Arab Web Awards.

I found one of the competitors is http://absoman.com/ their website is really interesting!

They got a HTML site plus to a Flash one. I like their flash page, its very light. But, at the same time very creative!

I think it is a good step, I hope that there would be good websites =/.

Yeah we heard about this, there is supposed to be a student discount for the competition application, but it is not on the website, Nightface, you work at Omantel, do you know anything about this?

Omantel is a partner in this competition. But, I dont think the competition is based on them. Myself I have no more details.

Lol i actually worked at the company who started this idea and are now promoting it. Although I was too lazy to announce it, they said they would actually advertise the whole thing throughout Oman.

I think that the competition is a little bit too 'hardcore', I'm not gonna participate as an individual but as a group. I'm quite irritated by the rule that says your website will be scrapped if they don't get enough entries for the category that you apply for. :S

And I think you might wanna join as an individual also if possible. You iDream site was the best Arab flash coded site I ever saw. So you should give it a try if that site is still up.

I think that they need 3 websites at least, we should be applying for Oman3D, but where the hell would we get other three Omani websites that would fall under the same category?!

I'm tempted to participate as an individual, and I think that I have time to make an update to the iDream website, I made that about four years ago, and it is probably time to rewrite the code and do the whole thing using Flash 8 and the new filters, but at the same time, I am not really sure of how these people are gonna judge, or how exactly I can apply, I'm not even in Oman, so I am not sure if I can apply under my own name from abroad. I've been thinking about updating that website before I heard about this competition, but still I'm not sure. The deadline is December I think.

Plus you dont have to worry where you apply from. As long as you are interested to take part and you are an Omani then go ahead and participate even from Greenland! This competiton has been designed to showcase Omani talent and stamp the fact that IT is overtaking us all in Oman. So goodluck once more.

Omantel is just a partner in this competition. Thats all. I think they are the major partners in promoting this event in Oman.

Btw just to let you guys know, if you win in the first round, you dont get anything. Your website gets chosen and you will finally end up contesting with hot designers all over Arabia or so I think. Cant remember. Will check out.

A registration fee of R.O. 40/- per website is required. Only websites that have completed registration & payment before the 10th of December 2005 will be entered into the competition

For a second I thought that "my @$$" was a person. I think that the fact that we had to pay to join makes this sound lik a scam, add to this the fact that the prize is just some stupid trophy, no money, and they have like all these sponsors, why the hell do people have to pay all this money?

Thanks man, I gotta win this. The people that run this thing did not seem to filter the random submissions made by those that did not pay the entry fees, eg. Yahoo and Google?! LOL - Someone bored simply entered these into the competition. But Nawras, SS, and SQU might simply be really competiting as well. :S

The idea is so great behind this. However, i can see that not much care is taken into presenting it as they are promoting it!

The organization of this event sucked big time.
Invitations to this event were sent as 1 per subscriber and no more were provided even upon request. However, they didn't check the invitations on arrival and many chairs, as a result, were left empty.

The whole award ceremony was a mess. It looked as if the ceremony was made to thank the organizers and the sponsors AND rip off those who joined them.

I paid 40 to join in this competition. This is how i think it was divided:
- 8 R.O for the three course meal (you dont wanna hear what it was)
- 10 R.O as a support to rent the ballroom
- 2 R.O as a support to print the booklet
- 20 R.O INCASE you win something.

Other than that, you might wanna think of paying MUCH more to win the 1st place and get a publicity.

In Alwatan and Oman newspapers they left the category i won gold award in blank.
My guess is that 40R.O were not enough to pay for the ink.

Other than that, the employees are friendly.

Evilio, I am sorry to hear about what happened to you guys, I am not going to talk about the horrible event because I have already written so much about it on my blog. I didn't understand what happened to the PAN awards thing, who qualified?

and we didn't get paid for the advert to this date... :(

Blue_chi, i have no idea what will be going on now. Am still trying to know if it will be in Dubai as it says in the news paper and their website or in Amman as they said in the ceremony.

Crazy, the winners were selected by judges and not by voting.

I think that the PAN awards will be held in Jordan, they are going to have the UAE Web Awards in Dubai soon, and people that qualify will have the final thing in Jordan. I am wondering of who actually qualified, did all the winners qualify or just the final 3 or what?
