I've seen (mostly in India) that muslims like to take comfort in the number 786. what's the significance? Is it a verse number in the Quran or something?

If you take the numeric values of all the letters of the Basmalah (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Basmala), according to the Abjad order (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arabic_alphabet#Abjadi_order), the total will be 786. In the Indian subcontinent the Abjad numerals (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abjad_numerals) have become quite popular. Some people, mostly in India and Pakistan, use 786 as a substitute for Bismillah ("In the name of Allah" or "In the Name of God"). They write this number to avoid writing the name of Allah, or Qur'anic verses, on ordinary papers. This practice does not date from the time of Muhammad and is not universally accepted by Muslims.

So I assume that many cars have the same number Gosh people do go to extreme .. I never thought that this could mean anything . Thinking about it there is a guy who I have seen driving around with a number 69247 get it !!

well theres an indian family here who own nice cars with a plate number all '786'...plus i had a friend of mine not indian who was obssesed abt this number!!

Never heard of it. Pretty interesting. Also obvious to note how there's soo much unnecessary symbology made by people within the religion.

i have heard of this thing and i asked about it.......my indian friends back home usually had to have it on all of their exam papers.......out of curiosity, i asked and they told me it was a short form for bismillah.....as i was young so i did not care..how it was generated.....

some had to write it as 786 / some other number starting with one i.e 786/1**

Ok, while I like what morphaknight said about it being unnecessary, I think the language and the tone of what Shinoda posted is pretty sickening. Come on man, why do you have to throw in the words EVIL and CONSPIRACY everywhere?? (not shinoda, his source)

yeah as soon as I read the word conspiracy, I can tell he would refuse to listen what the other side has to say no matter what they tell him. Also, numbers do play a significant role in the Quran. It was said there are many mathmatical miracles hidden in the Quran whenever a person would count the words being used. One noted was amount of water on earth and the land on it. I can't find a source for it but I seen it before. Thus, everything in life, no matter how big or small intertwines with Islam. It's basically our job to discover what's in this life using the Quran as a tool of guidance sent by our deity. However, people must refrain from blind faith in such a religion as it will lead to what we're seeing now.. ignorance, superstition and belief in many unnecessary things that is hardly beneficial.
