As expected Apple has unveiled a gadget that combines its hugely popular iPod music player with a mobile phone.

Announced by Apple boss Steve Jobs the device will be able to store about 100 songs and play them out randomly like the iPod Shuffle.

Developed by Motorola for Apple the gadget, dubbed Rokr, will first be available on the network of US mobile operator Cingular.

Since it was introduced in 2001, Apple has sold more than 21 million iPods.

Mobile music

The colour-screen gadget is silver, has stereo speakers and has a VGA quality camera onboard.

A version of Apple's iTunes music store has been developed for the phone so users can manage the tracks they store on it. Smart software on the handset pauses music if a phone call comes in.

Music is stored on a 512 megabyte memory card and the numbers of songs on board is capped at 100 - even if a bigger capacity card is used.

"This is the first device in a series," said Carsten Schmidt, European manager for Motorola's retail operations. "There will be more coming with higher memory."

Tunes are downloaded to it via a USB cable and users can fill it manually or use autofill to populate it with pop. The gadget is due to go on sale in Cingular stores from 8 September and is expected to cost $249.99 (£136). Buyers must commit to a two-year contract.

The Rokr phone is expected to be available in the UK and Europe in late September.

The Carphone Warehouse is advertising the phone on the O2 network for £209.99 for pre-pay customers and free for those choosing a monthly contract. The phones will be available from 15 September.

Mr Schmidt said that with this first device, music can only be downloaded from a PC to the phone.

But, he said, Motorola was talking to operators about future versions that can download songs via the airwaves.

Madonna is reportedly fronting the publicity campaign to advertise the phone. In a related announcement all Madonna's music is now available on the iTunes store.

As well as showing off the Rokr phone, Mr Jobs unveiled a new version of iTunes and a smaller version of the music player called the iPod nano.

Long wait

Plans for the Rokr gadget were first unveiled in July 2004 and it was originally scheduled to be unveiled at the Cebit technology fair in Hanover, Germany in March 2005.

Big hints that the phone was going to be unveiled on 7 September were given by the fact that Apple, Motorola and Cingular all planned press conferences for that day.

Apple is keen to replicate the success it has had with the music-only iPod sales which, in recent quarters, has been responsible for the biggest share of its profits.

However, the ultimate success of the device may rest on factors that Apple cannot control.

At the moment owners can only use them to play music downloaded into the gadget from a computer.

This makes sense because most mobile operators charge by the megabyte so downloading a track while out and about would add a premium that most would be unwilling to pay.

It might take time for mobile operators to change data pricing regimes which would help to convince consumers that downloading is worth it.

Download charges are likely to be one of the few ways that phone firms can recoup some cash from selling iTunes phones. Most of the money paid to buy songs from iTunes goes to record labels, Apple and payment processing firms.

The time it takes to download a song might affect the popularity of such services. Most Europeans and Americans are on phone networks that shunt data around at a theoretical maximum speed of 170 kilobits per second. Actual rates are much lower which would make downloading a multi-megabyte song a trying experience.

Without good deals on downloading, Apple may find it hard to convince existing users of iPods to buy another gadget. And with the iPod proving so popular entirely new customers may be scarce too.

Also Apple is coming slightly late to the market for music on mobiles. Many other handset makers and operators are already pushing services that combine the two.

Sorry, but it seems like a lot of noise for nothing new. My Nokia 6230 already does all of this, and more - its not 'capped' to 100 songs. Plus, it does all of those things mentioned.

Thoughts?

Nothing really special! 512 MB is nothing comparing it to the iPod jukebox.
The other mobile makers already got into the 1 Megapixel & 2 Megapixel cameras, & this one has a VGA camera.

yeah but i hated its navigation.. I'm trying to look for a decent mp3 player that has some good qualities.. namely battery, storage, easy navigation, radio player, equalizer, and a good way of sorting your playlists.

ti3gib

the iRivers got all that ... Except the navigation part ... it needs a somehow long learning curve ... I can't belive it I bought the stupid iPod instead of it ...

yeah I'm still waiting because I think the ipod is way too overated and too simplistic.. plus it doesn't have much features but for the iriver i think it only has about 16 hours..

I remember the creative 40 gb zen touch.. It has about 24 hours battery life, has an fm radio, equaliser and basically all that stuff but from what I heard, the random button and sorting playlists kind of suck. It looks like its 20 gb counterpart and it seems cheaper than the 40 gb ipod i believe. not sure though.

Do y'all even try utilizing a tech. tool to its maximum capability, or just buy the top of the line stuff and use it like you would any other lower end similar tech. tool?

@Ti3gib: I don't own an ipod, but know many around me who do. Why do you find it bad? Try answering that without comparing it to another product, but by how it fails to serve your purpose.

-Doesn't load from Windows Media Player
-No WMA or OGG support
-Super crappy bundled software
-no Anti-Surface-Scratch technology used (iPod photo)
-can't trust the battery bar ( problem not from me )
-corporation scam , says its 20GB when its actually a bit over 17GB
-No record or line-in jack
-No FM

I can get a few more ... Im too lazy to think now ....

MK:-
Look for the H320 or the H10 ... I think theyre better than the creatives

I cant stand the iPod navigation system. Its gimmicky.

I think the H10 kind of sucks really.. I tried the h320 at an electronic store.. I must say that I like its features, I think the battery was low and that its only the navigation that sucks so I'll be waiting for maybe a year or 2 till a decent mp3 comes out that isn't as overrated as the ipod.

lol imagine if they used that on their phone.. that must suck..

however if it was one very good navigation i'd say its the 20 gb rio provided that it has a very small size for a HD mp3..

You guys all suck. I have a 20GB iPod and I absolutely love it and cannot imagine life without it. OK so I can, but it would be a life full of misery, browsing through countless CDs in drawrers, on the table, in the closet and in various places in my car just to find a song I happen to like listening to now. I absolutely love having my whole music library with me at all time, and being able to play any song in ANY CD I have ever bought in seconds. I also know that some other MP3 players have superior features, but my iPod fills my needs and it looks so damn slick!

As for the Motorola/Apple phone, it follows the series of overpriced and useless Apple products that started with the iPod mini, then the Shuffle and now this.

Speaking of the iPod Shuffle: http://www.jokaroo.com/funnyvideos/pregnancytest.html

I don't care for any kind of music on my phone, but you guys don't realize how big a deal this announcement was because you don't buy music from the iTunes Music Store. Apple now sells 1.8 million songs a day on ITMS, so having a phone that can connect to it is a huge deal for them and for people in the US.

Anyhow, the big news to me yesterday wasn't the iTunes compatible phone but Apple's announcement that they are discontinuing the iPod mini, which is their biggest selling iPod, and replacing it with the iPod nano.

http://images.apple.com/ipodnano/images/indexcompare20050907.jpg

No more funky iPod mini colors, only black and white now. But look how tiny that thing is!

i doubt it will appeal to most people who prefer large storage as it's only 2 GB or 4 GB. it seems interesting and small and all but you want small... go for the gameboy micro.. even though it has nothing to do with music.. :p

Pretty overpriced, but oh well, isn't any Apple product?

^it looks like it is because it seems like its dependant on it. Aside from that, I use to live in a house where the maids use to take anything just for fun where they used some item for something totally different. Also they use to store house hold items in the wrong.. wrong places... Imagine going to school with the embarrassment of finding a wireless house phone in your bag or a remote control for the tv... >_>
