One of my favorite chapters of Oman's History is how it embraced islam (http://library.thinkquest.org/C006867/islam.htm):

In the seventh century AD, a new dawn shone upon Oman with the rise of Islam. Around 630 AD, the Prophet Mohammed sent one of his messengers, Amr bin Al As, to ask Omanis to embrace the new faith. Oman was quick to embrace Islam, which sparked new life in the country and gave Omanis a renewed sense of direction and a reason for unity.

Two days back, I was in my village and we visited a mosque there that had two Qibla, one heading to Al-Qudus another was heading to Makka .. it was really intresting to realise that Islam has spread very fast to the extent that the first Qibla was found in Oman.
(will provide some pictures taken once I upload them)

Oh people of Oman, you voluntarily converted to Islam.
Allah's Messenger did not invade your country with his horses and camel riders.
You did not disobey him, while some other Arabs did. You were not involved in dividing people, but you united your people.
May Allah unite all your people. The Prophet Mohammed(PBUH) sent Amr bin Al-A'as to you without any army or weapons. You accepted his call even though he came from so far away from you. You fed him even when he gave orders to you, when you were very strong and you had a large population.
No one did so many favors as you did and no one did such honourable and respectable work like you.
You must be very proud of yourselves because Allah's Messenger has so sincerely praised you. You will be honoured until the end of time!
Amr lived happily among you as Muslim, and he was grateful for your hospitality right up to the time of his departure.
Allah has blessed you through Abd and Gaifar, the sons of Al Julanda, for their submission to Islam. Allah has blessed them because of you, and blessed you because of them.
You were prosperous and when Allah's messenger(PBUH) died, you you showed your generosity, your benevolence.
We highly appreciated it. You accepted responsability for, and you partecipated in, the great mission; and you sacrificed your men and your wealth. Allah will bless your hearts and tongues.
There will be more work to be done, and am sure you will be my trusted people! I am not afraid at all that you will change your religion or you will harm your country.
Allah will bless you all!

Took this from one of the english books i found here, on Oman history.
This speech of Abu Bakr held in front of the omani delegation led by Al Julanda and in the presence of many Muhagireen and Ansaar, shows how Omani reaction to the Messenger letter was not a mere surrender, but a voluntary and wise acceptance.

Any other interesting chapters other than the acceptance of Islam in Oman? You might find for us some interesting point in history between Oman and India.

Four thousand years of India-Oman history will be recreated next week when eight men set sail from the sultanate in a boat to Gujarat to retrace the route that established their trade links in the bronze age.
There will be no engines and no modern gadgets on the 12 m long reed vessel, which will start its voyage Sep 7 from Sur on the same route that had linked Mesopotamia and the Arabian Peninsula to the Indus civilisation.http://news.webindia123.com/news/showdetails.asp?id=112655&n_date=20050902&cat=Asia

Oman a seafaring nation.
As long ago as 200 B.C. ships from Oman, the land then known as Magan, traded with Mesopotamia and India and other places and peoples eager for their cargoes. They carried copper from Oman's mountains, building material, fine marble and later, the highly-prized frankincense. Trade with China and elsewhere in the Far East later became an important part of the increasing pattern of Oman's expanding commercial activities.
…… Sayyid Said bin Sultan Al Bu Said, the great-great-grandfather of His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said, encouraged greater American trading interest in his country. For the better part of a quarter-century, he maintained close personal and commercial relationships with Americans.

Sultanah arrives in New York:
Sayyid Said's ship, the Sultanah, sailed from Muscat on December 23, 1839 arriving in New York harbour on April 30, 1840. Aboard as supercargo and as Sayyid Said's special envoy was secretary Ahmad bin Na'aman, charged with delivering letters and gifts for the President of the United States. A few days later New York City officials visited him aboard his ship to extend the civilities and hospitality of the City, a distinction rarely accorded foreign visitors.

i am sure we are aware of the fact that Ahmed bin Majid , was the Pilot who giuded Fasco degama to the indian subcontinent, i think to Goa.
And Ahmed bin Majid is from Oman. i think somewhere in the north, probably Sohar.
As far as Sea is concern, the stars used for navigation till today, many of them have arabic names. like Hamel, Rasalhague, Suhail, Mirfak, Markab..etc
i dont have the refrence reagarding the Ahmed bin Majid now, but it is there.

In the early Islamic period Oman's horizons extended dramatically. In the eighth century A.D. Omani sailors who, before Islam, had not ventured East of Sri Lanka (Ceylon), were already sailing to China. An Omani, Abu Ubayda bin AlQasim, who lived in the first half of the eighth century was the first Arab to make the perilous 7,000 km. journey to Guangzhou (Canton) and back.

A book called "The Voyage of Sindbad", - i think - talks about the building of an exact relica of the omani ship used to sail to Canton. and the voyage to china.
i think it was in the celeberation of the 1980 or 1985 national day. the replica was biuld under the supervision of an english sailor, funded by ministry of heritage and culture, wood used from india and labours from sur and india. the ship was totally biult in sur. it has sailed with no modern instruments at all. except for a radio for communication, which did not work after few days. all crew except the master, were omani. the ship took about six months to get there using only sails.
on completion, when they got there, the late Minister Sayed Faisal, was waiting for them on the jetty.
the ship then was loaded onto a cargo ship and transfered to oman.
i am not sure, but i think it is the one in the roundabout of bustan palace!!

I enjoyed reading "The Diary of an arabien princess" written by sayeda salma, most what i found interesting is how the Omani and Royal family lived, she gave a refelct on little details that usually history books dont mention.......it is true when said, if u dont have a history, u dont get a future
