View Full Version : Wearing kemah for taxi driver
Personally I didn't know about this rule, just recently I came to know that it's a must for the taxi drivers to wear 'kemah' or 'kumah' otherwsie if the policeman saw him they will give him a ticket.
Is this really true and what do you think of it? and what is the aim behind it, is it to to avoide bangalies from driving taxi drivers!!
amo_l_oman 26-08-05, 05:18 PM Kemah is kummah??
amo_l_oman 26-08-05, 05:28 PM Now Now Now
if what you said is true, i start to understand what is wrong with the big guy who rules our safety.
And am not talking about simple officers, always smiling and nice with amo but just cause she's white meat as Rev once explained me :p , but about the big brains.
If they think to solve the taxi driver problem with a kummah, i'd say mabrook.
What about checking licenses, making private companies, teaching them english, regulating prices?
Sounds crazy, i know, but also in this case i have the hope that one day all this will happen inshallah.
Yes even the driver lesson teacher should wear "kumah" as well! :cute:
Rossonero 26-08-05, 05:40 PM They should wear Kummah.
They should put a car deodrant for their busses too

It's more like a national dress amo.
And don't you think they have standard tariff in Muscat area and other areas?
About teaching them english I think that is a good suggestion.
amo_l_oman 26-08-05, 05:50 PM It's more like a national dress amo.Honestly when i think about national dress, the only i like is disdasha, mussar and khanjar.
I understand as i read, that is difficult for a man to dress every day like that, but i find it more attractive :cute:
And don't you think they have standard tariff in Muscat area and other areas?Yes is called personal tariff: Carrefour Shatti Plaza 7 ryals, next time if you call me on mobile will make you discount.
About teaching them english I think that is a good suggestion.Aiwa!!!
Rossonero 26-08-05, 05:52 PM And do Bangalis realy drive taxis in Oman?
Honestly when i think about national dress, the only i like is disdasha, mussar and khanjar.

Well government employees wear white dishdasha and mussar daily.
And nice to know you find our national dress is cute ;).
Yes is called personal tariff: Carrefour Shatti Plaza 7 ryals, next time if you call me on mobile will make you discount.
I think it works like this, once you enter the taxi then they will start counting with 5 ryals (maybe it's taxi tax) and then depending on your destination they will add.
Aiwa!!!
You have learnt new word today, mabrook :D
And do Bangalis realy drive taxis in Oman?
God knows, remember we were discussing workers running away from their sponsers.
ok ,,,, first what is kemah :os
I understand its a national dress ,, but what is it ??
amo_l_oman 26-08-05, 07:47 PM lol kummah
Arabian Princess 26-08-05, 08:01 PM its the omani cap SS ..
I dont know whats the reason behind it but I guess there should be a reason.
aha ,,, so the rule is that the omani taxi driver should wear it
Yes that is the rule.
And strange that you don't know Omani kumma, I think they call it "ga7fiya" in uae.
ya Icy we called ga7fiya ,, but I didnt know that its name is kumma in oman ,,
I know I dont know alot of omani words :os
-----------------------
I think its a good rule that will differ the taxi drivers ,, her in UAE ,, the local taxi driver have to wear the local dishdasha , '3otra , 3qal ,,which is the local dess
Muscati 26-08-05, 09:08 PM I thought the rule originally was that they had to wear a mussar, not kumma. But since when do these guys follow the rules. Most of them don't follow the tarrif and try to rip off their customers by overcharging them. Plus the rules say that they have to have their ACs on but you often find taxis who have their customers suffering in the heat and refuse to open the AC for them.
I think the way to fix the taxi problem in Oman is by switching to taxi companies instead of independent taxis. The companies will be liable for a certain degree of service. Drivers who work for them who don't comply with the rules should be fired. In Oman taxi drivers have it the wrong way around. They tell the customer where they want to go and they only pick up customers who are going that direction. Customer service is a non-existent concept to these guys. Most of them have a regular job in the morning and then drive a cab in their spare time to make a couple extra bucks. As a result we have too many cab drivers in Oman while at the same time, the job isn't enough for most people to make a full time living off of it.

it will save alot ,,
Thug4Life 26-08-05, 11:47 PM it will save alot ,,and so that Will cut a very important source of a living to good bunch of Omanies out there !!!!:os
amo_l_oman 26-08-05, 11:53 PM and so that Will cut a very important source of a living to good bunch of Omanies out there !!!!:osI don't see how.
Thug4Life 26-08-05, 11:59 PM u think they will be alllll recruited in a unified companies????
amo_l_oman 27-08-05, 12:10 AM u think they will be alllll recruited in a unified companies????Obviously no, but at least would be the honest ones to benefit from that.
There's a couple of examples with Hello Taxi and City taxi.
They have decent prices but being small co doesn't help them.
Probably those mentioned by Muscati, the ones who do it as second/third job, would be cut out and honestly i wouldn't be displeased cause they are the worst.
Once i was really in despair and from Seeb to home in Shatti i had to pay more than 10 rials.
What pisses me off is that younger people, for example in lulu centre ask ONLY 3 ryals.
When you want to make a plan for things to go better, for sure you have to sacrifice something, and if that something is old dishonest chaps, well i say let's do it.
Is not such a simple issue, is logical that it must be included in a wider issue: tourism, business opened to foreign investors, but opened for real, and many other things.
Once you have the customers you'll have a huge taxi business too, and no need to worry to cut jobs.
You must create jobs and is all a chain.
and so that Will cut a very important source of a living to good bunch of Omanies out there !!!!:os
You are right there are a lot of Omanies depending on Taxi income as a source of living. And that is why we see a lot of taxi drivers in Oman, or in other words the offer is more than the demand! which is a problem in itself.
amo, the taxi rates in european countries much more expansive compared to Oman and even in Dubai it's expansive now.
ok ,,,, first what is kemah :os
I understand its a national dress ,, but what is it ??
I was going to ask the same question!
yeah whats this Kemah? kummah? kumar?
also whats a Musar?
:eh:

amo_l_oman 27-08-05, 03:34 PM amo, the taxi rates in european countries much more expansive compared to Oman and even in Dubai it's expansive now.Icey, when i read answers like yours "also in europe is like that, also in America is the same" well that makes me smile cause means that the counterpart has no more arguments.
Let's make something clear: am not here to criticise blindly or to attack.
I like this country and its people and if i see something that can be fixed, i just try to say how it could be done.
I was just making a comparison to be fair and anyway the thread is about kummah and not really about taxi rates, but no problem in discussing it though ;).
AP, thanx am sure now it's clear to everyone!
amo_l_oman 27-08-05, 04:51 PM We don't have to be fair, we must want the best for the Sultanate without looking at other miseries :)
Muscati 27-08-05, 05:08 PM IceTea, what you said isn't true. Taxis in Oman are more expensive than both Dubai and Europe. For one thing our Taxis don't have meters and rely on a fixed rate system. In Dubai I stay at Jumeriah and I take a cab to City Center which is almost a 15 or 20 minute drive and it comes out to be around 30 dirhams. Here in Oman a similar ride would be about 5 rials. Plus in Dubai, you'd be riding in a new car, with the AC open, in total comfort. Not to mention the extra features that they give.
Muscati, By Europe what you mean?
If you mean Germany and Austria! The taxi's there are EXTREMELY expensive! I took a taxi at night (which are higher at night) from Zoologisher Garten to Hackhesher Martk and I end-up paying 30 euros! Its almost the same cost of a flight on Emirates Airline to Muscat!
Muscati 27-08-05, 07:04 PM Lotus, I can't make a comparison for every city in Europe. When I lived in Glasgow in 2003/4 a cab from the airport to the city center cost £16, which at that time was about 9 rials. In Oman, a cab from the airport to any of the hotels is 7 rials, but the distance is much shorter.
they must wear "wizaar" also, otherwise they shouldnt be allowed to drive taxis!
