What do you think about Omani Media?

(Anything you wana say about Omani Media please say it here)

There arnt many Omani magazines too.

Alnajm, AutOman, Alroya, Al-Mar2a, Oman Economist (i guess thats its name?)

Anyways, I only like the Magazines and I think they can improve.

What made me bring this topic is; I was looking for some channels today at home while i was shocked by the amount of IRAQI channels .. over 10 channels! It made me wonder, Iraq, still not in peace and isnt a secure country has that number of channels..and Oman...one of the MOST peaceful countries, yet behind ... Has ONLY 1 channel...

We've been promised a sports channel for like a year now..even more, where is it?

Cheers,

Being a foreigner and needing english publications i like al roya publications, am a fan of Hatim though i don't know him, don't despair though.
Luv Oman economic review, simple for my simple mind.
When it comes to news well it comes to hurt.
They sound flat, just an impression though.
I have faith that one day there will be freedom of expression.
Faith is last to die, so they say.
But don't ask me who's they, no idea.
I like the weather forecast on Oman tv.

I like Apex publications. I buy BusinessToday and Oman2day every month, plus of course TheWeek every Tuesday night. I hear that they have applied for an FM license and should have a station early next year. TheWeek's gonna start in Arabic soon. Rumors are that they also have plans for an Arabic women's lifestyle magazine before the year's end and that they have had approval for a daily Arabic and English newspaper for a while but are still undecided on whether to go ahead with them.

Al Roya makes nice looking glossy magazines which are sold at a good low price. However I find the content a bit lacking. But then again how much more can expect from a 500 baisa magazine.

UMS makes Oman Economic Review which is a good magazine but a bit erratic in quality. They have good months and bad months. Best thing about it is that most of the time you can get the issues for free. Al Mar'a is a nice magazine but would be better if they decide on making it in two editions for Arabic and English instead of combining both in one.

They say Oman will have 6 or more private FM stations next year.

amo, oo a fan of our publications ;)

Muscati, I think you're talking about FUTOON, in partnership with Al-Watan, it is THE arabic "The Week" for Alwatan and APEX.

About Radio, they need to get rid of that guy FAIK or whatever his name is..

What about TV-Channels? Common, Dubai has 3+ channels, other than Abu Dhabi, Sharjah etc. Iraq..10+ channels! Why cant oman have more?

I think Futoon is exclusively from Al Watan with nothing to do with The Week. They heard that The Week was working on an Arabic version so they went and quickly launched something that copies it. I don't like Futoon, I find the quality lacking. Arabic TheWeek is still in the plans.

Muscati, what i heard is that there was supposed to be TheWeek in english, but then they became in partnership with Al-Watan for Futoon, to be honest i never checked futoon out..

Rossonero, again you saying something from your mind about the Sports channel. Nobody said its coming out, & nobody promised! They said there will be a study for the chances of having such channel.

Anyways, I believe for the magazines & newspapers, the private media for this section is opened long time back, so its kinda improving.

I think for the private televisions & radios, something will be coming very soon, talking about radios in specific where they are easier to apply & start broadcasting.

I am not sure of the business people in Oman if they will go for creating private tv channels, looking at the situation of channels on the air right now!

I read it once on an arabic website, it was set for March 2005.

It will be better to follow the news inside, the official news.

The government is no longer going to launch new tv channels, mybe except for the sports waiting for the study results.

I believe this part is going to be under the private sector, so people should think of launching these channels.

We should learn from the situation of Oman tv, rather than the local news & events, what else it can offer?!!

This is the question ;)

also, oman needs to improve its programmes, i think some programmes arents necessary :os
n i think omani actors r a lil bit fake, they should try to be more realistic so omani series would be more interesting to watch!
the only non-fake actors i noticed r ameena 3abdel rasool, fa5riya 5amees, 9ale7 za3al n s3ood aldarmaki ..
i noticed some improvement on some english series, "the sinbad show" (which is kinda interesting compared to other programmes shown on oman) is shown on oman channel now but i think its too old

How can we do so?
By checking the local news talking about the official actions by the ministries or the government organizations.

They've been saying that since the year 2002.

Anyways.. I don't care much about magazines , All I want is a decent english F.M station and I'll be more than happy.

FM? They need to get these old songs..1990's...damn .. new songs SUCK

CrazyReD

if they had the old songs ya all would say all they have are old songs

I don't see anything bad with the current english FM channel music wise

An Islamic FM channel won't be bad

as for the sports channel I'd rather they take as much time as they need instead of rushing it up

btw wasn't there an omani series? the one with Ali Bahar singing the theme song?

FM:-
mmm ... I seriously can't see what's wrong with ( 90.4 ) , maybe because I don't listen to it that much ... But it would be great if they had more talk shows about more criterias

If they want the media in oman to develop they better get the Abeer Tanoora lady ... I can't stand her voice ... It's always the same thing ...

WRITTEN:-
about written media ... We could use more lifestyle and youngster intrest publications ...

TELEVISION:-
Are we in desperate need of TV Channels ? Why ? What Kind ?

I mean yes I am in favor of having more channels ... but I seriously don't know what to expect from them ? ... A sports channel is a good idea ... But what else ?

... my honest opinion would be that Oman should try to improve her current channel before making others...
the F.M also needs improvement... but also, if u see other channels... don't worry some are worse than Oman... we just need to be awakened...
