Dear Members

I had niece who had polio when she was 5 months old and today she is 24 yrs. I have tried everything I could try to help her with all the doctors here in Oman/Dubai but no luck, and asked the doctors around if there is any treatment available across the globe where I can take her, but they failed to give me a positive answer, saying for late polio there is no any treatment.

Whenever I visit her she keeps on saying I wish I could walk, why Allah made my legs paralysed, instead if my hands were, it would have been better, at least I would be able to walk, tear comes from my eyes when she says that. Since she is grown up as a result here legs are not balanced (one is longer and one is shorter). With all my support and courages she failed to go to school, but she is very very intelligent, by practicing at home, she read/writes well and have excellent handwriting.

I would ask the members of this forum is there any hospital across the globe where I can take her for treatment. Please if you knew of, do let me know, no matter how expensive the hospital is, financially I have no problem, but treatment should be there, I want to see her walking.

I really appreciate, if you could let me know the name or the website of the hospital who treats such polio patient.

Thanks in advance.

No probs - well my sister has a friend whos mother suffered from polio, but shes always seemed fine to me, but this was in Paris. If you want I can ask my sister to ask her friend which hospital in France it was. It might be in America though.

I'm very sorry Brave Heart, but I'm afraid there is no treatment for it... :(

Though there was never a cure for polio, most who contracted it experienced improvement in muscle strength and control after the acute infection subsided. In some cases, however, motor neurons were left severely damaged or completely destroyed, resulting in permanent weakness or paralysis, most commonly to the lower extremities.
I got this info from http://www.cloudnet.com/~edrbsass/poliodefinition.htm .You can visit the site for further info. I also looked at many other sites but they say pretty much the same thing.

I'm really sorry... If you wish to aid her then maybe you can do that by helping her get over her depression and help her accept it? I know this is immensely and awfully difficult for her to do... but there's nothing more you can do now, right? :(

I thought the people here in this forum, doesn’t have any feeling for human being or don’t respond anything for good cause, they will only get energetic and responsive to any subject related to ‘Sex’. But I guess I was wrong here in this forum still some members who really care for others, did some research & give their feedback, their valuable comments/feedback are highly appreciateable.

I personally approached to so many hospitals in Gulf, their response was very negative. Telling me its too late for her to get an permanent cure, but I am still optimistic that somewhere around the globe treatment will be available for her, to find the right hospital for her this can only happen if you can help me in this research. I have been provided some hospital names and their website from some members of www.omanforum.com which I am in contact with those hospitals.

Again I thank to those who have already commented and some still putting all their effort doing some research trying to help me to find a good hospital for her. I’ve already stated no matter how expensive the hospital is , financially I have NO PROBLEM, but solution should be there. Thanx all again.

dear Brave - Heart,

it depends on the grade of paralysis. If some of leg muscles have tone then physiotherapy can be helpful. However, If it is a complete paralysis then treatment will be difficult because the body cannot make new nerve cells.

Still there will be a chance for walking if there is a tone in Thigh muscles by using Assistive devices (http://www.mayoclinic.com/invoke.cfm?id=HA00028) or use of artificial leg

There are prosthetic and orthopedic clinic which make such legs with joints. I know a friend of mine who did an artificial fingure in France. they can be made is also in Thailand and Malaysia.
You have to consult an orthopedic in Khola Hospital to examin the leg carefully and to tell you whether an artifical leg will be helpful to establish walking.
