The World Summit Youth Awards is the first youth-led and youth-oriented competition on the global scale
No longer is the world or anyone, to the effect debating on the importance of information and communications as a prerequisite for socioeconomic development. In fact countries of the world are now fully aware of the need to acquire, develop and enhance the use of ICT in all walks of life if they ever want to have an advanced position in the highly competitive world of today. The United Nations have spearheaded as it has always been, the call for and organizing of a two phased world summit tilted World Summit on Information Society (WSIS).
Phase I of this Summit was held in Geneva during the period 10-12th Dec. 2003. In that phase, which was attended by a large number of heads of states, experts, planners, decision-makers Non-Government organizations, UN agencies and others, the Declaration of Principles and the Plan of Action was thoroughly discussed and finally adopted. The forthcoming phase II of the Summit to be held in Tunisia 16-18th November 2005 will be devoted to resolving some pending issues and beyond.
The World Summit Youth Award (WSYA) is an international competition for youth-led projects that encourage the active participation of young people in the emerging Information Society. It is the first global “YOUTH FOR YOUTH” initiative for selecting and promoting best practice in e-content and technological creativity, demonstrating young people’s potential to create digital opportunities.
It is founded in the spirit of genuine youth empowerment and action. The World Summit Youth Award is truly an opportunity for youth. It is an opportunity both for the online platform users and designers.
Most young people are talented and open-minded and are working everyday to create e-Content and applications that could make a real difference for the world we live in. If only society would take them seriously.
