View Full Version : Shabab Oman!
Hello,
Shabab Oman is one of the largest vessels of its era in the world, which is still seaworthy and in active service. She is considered an important ambassador for Oman, visiting many countries and participating in international celebrations and events, and acts as a reminder of Oman's ancient maritime history.
The ship was built in 1971 in Scotland from Scottish Oak and pine from Uruguay. She was first under the dictate of the Ministry for Youth, but in 1979, she was transferred to the Royal Navy of Oman for use as a training ship, teaching the trainees important navigational skills and providing experience to sail the seas.
Since joining the Navy, Shabab Oman has travelled to many countries including Australia, Russia, Japan, the United States, the United Kingdom, France and the Mediterranean. Training courses are still run on the ship, some of which last a few weeks, and are attended by young trainees from the Sultan's Armed Forces, the Royal Guard, and the Royal Oman Police. The ship is capable of accommodating 24 persons and during their voyages, the crew are provided with the opportunities to experience international cultures.
1983 Year of Youth Voyage
This voyage saw the start of Shabab's ambassadorial role when the Year of Youth was celebrated in Oman. The ship carried young people from various countries within the Gulf to visit GCC ports. She travelled to Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and the UAE, ending her trip in Qatar, in time for the inauguration of the GCC summit, held in Doha in 1983.
1986 United States of America
On the directives of His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said, the supreme commander of the Armed Forces, Shabab Oman sailed to the USA, making her first long voyage. The voyage took seven and a half months and was undertaken in order to participate in the US naval show held to commemorate the first centenary of the Statue of Liberty in New York. During this visit, she also sailed to Canada, Djibouti, Jeddah, Alexandria, Gibraltar, Madeira, Bermuda, Rhode Island, Fair Marina, Baltimore, Washington, Norfolk, Halifax, Nova Scotia, Tunisia and Aqaba, covering 20,256 nautical miles and returning to Muscat on 18 October 1986.
1987 Australia
On 17 October 1987, Shabab Oman set sail for Australia in response to an invitation to participate in the second centenary celebration of the arrival of the First Fleet. Shabab Oman was the only Arabian ship to participate and arrived in Australia in January 1988.
1989 France
In April 1989, Shabab Oman set forth on a voyage to Rouen, France to participate in the celebration of the second centenary of the French Revolution and the international declaration of human rights.
Whilst docking in London, Shabab sailed under the Tower Bridge in a long sailing vessels event to commemorate the city's celebration of 800 years of admiralty in London.
Shabab's journey also took her to ports in Djibouti, Aqaba, Istanbul, Athens, Naples, Ibiza, Gibraltar, Lisbon, Brest, Hull, Rouane, Portsmouth, Dartmouth, Falmouth, Funchal, Casablanca, Tunisia, Limassol and Jeddah. She returned to Raysut, in the Dhofar region of Oman.
1992 United States of America
Shabab's second visit to the United States was to participate in the celebrations which marked 500 years since the discovery of America by Christopher Colombus on board the Santa Maria in 1942.
1994 France
Shabab's second visit to France coincided with the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the Normandy Landings of World War II. During her seven day stay in Rouane, Shabab Oman was visited by approximately 20,000 visitors out of a total of one million visitors to the port.
1995 Dubai to Muscat President's Cup Regatta
Together with the Royal Baghla (Zeinat al Bihar), Shabab Oman competed with other ships in the annual President's Cup Regatta organised by the Association of Sailing, Royal Navy of Oman.
1996 Russian Federation
Under the directives of Sultan Qaboos bin Said, and the invitation of the Russian Navy, Shabab Oman sailed to St Petersburg to participate in the celebrations commemorating 300 years of the Russian Navy Fleet.
In the same year, Shabab Oman competed in the Cutty Sark Race for high mast ships, sailing from Rostock in Germany, to Copenhagen, Denmark. To Oman's pride, Shabab Oman finished first, and also won the silver shield for the best ship participating.
She visited many ports during this voyage, including Jeddah, Calgary (Sardinia), Oporto (Portugal), St Petersburg, Mariham & Turku (Finland) and Malta. She was immensely popular at each port and received over 22,000 visitors.
When Shabab Oman docked in Copenhagen, her guest of honour was the German President, Dr Roman Harzog, who was presented with a silver Omani khanjar. HRH Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, also visited the ship when she docked in Finland.
1997 Japan
On 15 February 1997, Shabab Oman sailed to the Far East to participate in Japan's first centenary celebration of Osaka Port and to compete in the first Asian race for long sailing vessels. Shabab Oman was eagerly anticipated in every port she visited during this year, particularly as she had just won the International Friendship Award (Cutty Sark 1997) for the second consecutive year. This award is given to the ship which displays the best teamwork and cooperation. It is the first time in the history of the annual International Sailing Association's race that a ship has won the cup on two consecutive years. In recognition of the crew's outstanding success, His Majesty, Sultan Qaboos bin Said conferred on them a Royal Honour for their hard work, effort and good conduct.

Hello,
Did you know that Shabab Oman, had taken a chance to participate in 2 International Events this year?
Well it did participate in the first even that is called:
Gosport & Portsmouth International Festival of the Sea 2005
and the second event is called:
Tall Ships Race 2005 - Fredrikstad
How Great is this?!!!!!!!
PErsonnally i like any sea sport, and with Shabab Oman participating in it, is going to grow more of my intrest to know how it will end up with them:)
Even if they did not win, yet i will still feel Proud of it taking part in these races :3mani:
sallam,
For decades, Navy Days at Portsmouth Dockyard was an annual reminder of England's Naval power and influence around the world, but with the shrinking of our marine fleet this event was disbanded. Fortunately this showcase of Armed forces might was revived as a combined ancient and modern tribute to ships worldwide as the International Festival of the Sea.
In 2002, Portsmouth and Gosport hosted a magnificent celebration of sea power, both Naval and civilian, and this year sees the Festival's return to it's historic roots. We look forward to seeing you there!
The Festival is on between 30th Jun 2005 to 3rd Jul 2005
=================================
Shabab Oman, had left Oman since 27th April 2005 and they will be arriving Portsmouth on 24th June 2005. They have been passing by many countries on their way to UK. Ms^Know^It^All 27-06-05, 05:36 PM How come you don't recognize the difference between Omani and Pakistani?
In a uniform... They look the same... Without the Dishdasha Iam sure someone could mistake you for an indian or a pakistani.
Paradise Babe 04-07-05, 06:35 AM Today was an awesome day.. i cant describe how much fun i had, really enjoyed it and felt so sad that this was the last day of the festival.. The Dock Yard was so BIG it would take u a full day to see it all.. but to be honest its never enough, you would love it so much wouldn't want to leave the place.. each time i decide to leave.. i change my mind and take another direction to see some more.. The festival is celebrating the victory of 200 years of the memory of Trafalgar war, which was between england and france, and also for the memory of the captain who was leading the english army in the war (Lord Nelson) who was killed in the war after he was shoot by the french army..The festival started on the 28th of june and the Queen Elizabeth and the royal family attended the opening of this festival.. it was held in southsea (where i live) on the seafront..
To be honest i was excited about the omani ship Shabab Oman which was Participating in the festival.. as soon as i arrived to the festival the 1st thing i did is went to the information desk asking for the location of shabab oman.. was so excited that i was rushing thinking that i wont make it :p silly me.. The ship was built in Scotland 1971 and owned by the Royal Navy of Oman and its a Sail training vessel for the young omani sailors. Number of crew is 53, Officers 7, Ship's Company 22, Under Training 24. The overall Lenght of the Ship is 52m, Height 30m, Engines 2*250 HP Caterpiller and the speed of shabab oman is 10 knots max under power. I took a tour on board of the ship and saw the captains control room and some other parts of the ship.. the omani sailors did some omani dances with some famous omani music songs, all of the visitors of the ship enjoyed it.
I knew from one of the sailors of shabab oman that shabab oman wasnt the only ship thats participating in the festival. Al MUA'ZZAR was the name of the Warship that joined the festival too.. I Loved the name ( al muazzar) sounded so powerful.. so after i have seen the shabab oman ship i rushed to look for the omani warship! i had to admit that it took me ages to find it coz the place was so packed and its really hard to move around with out a map! sadly there wasn't any mini maps for the dock yard.. so each time i see an information desk i would ask them for the location of the omani warship.. Until finaly i found it.. was so happy, got on it and for my shock it was the most packed ship ever! everyone liked it, am so proud of it.. so proud that oman was invited to this festival coz this is a once in a life time! thats what i was told! that who ever go to be part of it will never be attending anything like this in his life! Al Muazzar means in english The Supported. was built in United kingdom for the omani navy and the second after The Qahir which is identical twin to the muazzar. Al muazzar displaces 1500 tons and has a top speed of 28 knots. The Ship is Full loaded with Weapons, machine guns of everykind! they also had all types rockets on the warship! The festival also gathered most important ships in the world.. there were ships from France, Bulgaria, Brazil, Germany, Indonesia, India, Colombia, Denmark, Ireland, Italy, Netherland, Norway, Poland and USA ( So many more of them that i didnt mention btw) the ships were from all kinds! Tall ships or Warships. I really liked the Indian warship.. This destroyer is so big that its designed to carry 2 westland sea king holicopters. or 2 hindustan aeronautics helicopters! i really admired this warship!
The festival was Unpredictable that everyone really enjoyed the shows and the shops despite the ships.. i lived a navy life in this day that i wont forget.. i bought a book about the festival and did some nice shopping.. i got some cute souvenirs, went crazy for everything. I also had seafood meal to make my day! :D felt so sad about the festival ending so soon.. wished it was for longer time.. but thanks to god that today i made it and got to be there to experiance such an event that would happen only once in 200 years!
Here are some pics i took of both of the Shabab oman and Al Muazzar..
Enjoy.. :flower:
