London is the third most expensive city in the world, behind Tokyo and Osaka in Japan, according to a report released today.

The least expensive city is Asuncion in Paraguay.

The cost of living survey from Mercer Human Resources Consulting is an annual survey which ranks 144 of the world's cities according to the comparative cost of over 200 items.

New York is used as the base city and scores 100 points. London remains the most expensive city in Europe with a score of 120.3. The most expensive city in the world is Tokyo which scores 134.7, three times more than Asuncion's score of 40.3.

"Steep accommodation and transport costs [in London] together with the appreciation of the pound against the US dollar have contributed to the city's high ranking," said Marie-Laurence Sepede, research manager at Mercer.

The top five most expensive cities are Tokyo, Osaka (with a score of 121.8), London, Moscow (119) and Seoul (115.4). Other British cities ranked include Glasgow in 40th position (87.5) and Birmingham, which occupies the 47th spot (85.8).

In the US, New York is in 13th position, Los Angeles is ranked 44 (86.7) and San Francisco is in 50th place (84.9).

Lima, Peru - ranked 118 with a score of 66.9 - is the most expensive city in South America. Sydney is the costliest city in Australia and the 20th (95.2) most expensive in the world.

Always knew that London was one of the most expensive cities in the world, 3rd place wasn't surprising at all. Their prices just keep shooting every year.

Not a surpirse that Tokya is still holding that position, & not a surprise actually that UK in general is kinda expensive, this is well known, at least for us here in Oman.

Yahh its very true.. London is the most expensive place to live in! u pay tax for everything! and u need licence for everything too.. Can u imagin u need to pay TV licence for each tv u get ur house!
They also pay Road Tax! :p

Yeah I figured - people live in little 'gawa6ee' as my mom says:p - so you see guys, next trip you're planning, don't think London, go to Paris! You'll get you're money's worth there :D. ;)

The funny thing is that France has higher overall taxes, but prices are actually lower than the UK.

They get a better subsidy deal out of the EU, and their sales tax is lower.

But then again they're just not as cool as London.

PT, Paris is pretty. That is not the same as cool. Nicely preserved old culture is not the same as a burgeoning, living cultural experience. The World is in London.

P.S. As well as being the coolest (music, shopping, design, and yes even food), it's also the most tolerant and multi-cultural. At least girls in London can wear their 7ejab to school :p

And yes, London seems to be more tolerant and multicultural. And my friend whos lived in both London and Paris prefers London.

But Paris is "cool", if you know what i mean. Cafes and intellectual mumbo jumbo and arty farty nonsense, its all "cool" :D
