The Egyptian government has donated food aid worth US$40,000 (about 44m/-) to flood victims in Zanzibar, according to the Egyptian Consulate General in Zanzibar.
Mourad Moustafa Kamel said on Tuesday that the assistance was given in response to the Zanzibar Chief Ministers Offices request for help in the wake of the floods in mid-April which killed one person and displaced 16,000 others.
`I have the honour to inform you that your request for emergency assistance for people affected by the floods has been accepted by the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Abu Gheit,` Kamel said in a letter to the Zanzibar Disaster Management Committee which is under the Chief Ministers Office.
He adds: `You are kindly requested to advise us on the most convenient maritime route between Cairo and Zanzibar.`
The rainfall was the heaviest recorded in Zanzibar since 1960 and left dozens of homes submerged in floodwaters.
Damage from the floods is estimated to run into tens of millions of shillings.
Unicef and the Tanzania Red Cross Society helped the Zanzibar government to distribute emergency aid during the floods.
The government has appealed for US$1.4m (about 1.5bn/-) for purchasing food and building materials for the victims.

Zanzibar according to Mti was connected to him and his family owned a prety good fortune there. I think Mti is in a good position to tell us more what has been going on in the clove ireland since April 2005. I believe the flood was the heaviest in century.
Zanzibar that romantic ireland. I believe there are still people connected to Oman there than is to Egypt but anyhow a friend in need is a friend indeed.
Well done Egypt you've beaten the USA on this one.
I believe 40k USD equals about R.O. 15384.615
