I cant deny the fact that I am a big fond of this city (SOHAR)
Whenever I intend to travel by car to Buraimi or UAE the first thought that comes into my mind is...Sohar is on my way!! once I remember that I start smiling!....The Breeze coming from that city at once reaches to my memory about it. The Scent of the past that is mixed with the modern gigantic growth yet..Identity wise...Never lost!

That is Sohar to me....if I do pass by it after going through the wonderfuly made Sohar gate...I try my best to stop at it..and even sometimes cruiz in the Sohar Beach area...the well developed kornesh....

============================================
Ancient capital of Oman and so thought to be the birthplace of Sindbad the sailor, Sohar is located on the lush Batinah coast and lapped by the calm waters of the Gulf of Oman. The coastal plain of rich agriculture land and palm -fringed beaches is often described as the “breadbasket of Oman”.

Sohar was the main city of trade centuries ago. The city is renowned for its copper deposits, and archaeological evidence points to copper extraction being carried out 5,000 years ago. There are still three copper mines in operation in Sohar with over 18 million tons of copper deposits.

The city is an attractive region for tourists due to its clean, safe beaches and the plethora of archaeological features. One of the first references to 'Sohar' is in the work of historian, Yaqut Al-Hamawi who implies that the city took its name in the 6th century AH from a descendent of Noah: Sohar bin Adam bin Sam bin Noah. Intresting haa?

When the Palestinian Arab scholar Muqadisi visited the city in the 10th century AH, he described it as a "flourishing city with a large number of people living there. It is a beautiful city with a comfortable life, ...and its mosque overlooks the sea ... the Mihrab changes colour because it is covered in copper...".

The city/ town owns much to the fishing and farming industries around it. A visit to the fish souk is a must for visitors. Early morning and early evening fishermen beach their boats at the market and disgorge their catch - a variable Neptune’s harvest of shark, sailfish, grouper, snapper, lobster and shrimps.

Sohar’s labyrinth of streets and alleyways is a boon for shoppers and tourists. The town retains it’s old fashioned charm, successfully combing the traditional Omani way of life with its twentieth century needs .

At it’s heart lies a beautiful restored fort, and a magnificent Corniche sweeps the coast. The Sohar Castle is one of the most prominent features in the city of Sohar and was built between the 13th and 14th century AD by the 'Emirs of Hormuz'.
Imam Nasser bin Murshid Al Ya'arubi managed to conquer and expel the Portuguese from the castle, which was used since then as the administration centre for the rulers of Al-Bu Said dynasty.
An escape tunnel runs from inside the Fort to the Wilayat of Buraimi, 10 Km to the west. It was used as a route to obtain reinforcements and supplies during sieges. The castle features a musium located inside it.

Sohar has many wadis with running water, such as Wadi Hibi, Wadi Ahin and Wadi al Jizzi, and beautiful public parks.

It is an area that is under tourist development as was said earlier and a number of deluxe hotels have now been built.

Every third Friday afternoon in the winter month, holds a series of bullfights. Unlike its European equivalent, this version is completely bloodless, as bulls pit their strength against one another. The winner pushes the loser from the ring. The scramble as these magnificent, agile beasts come too close to the audience or even break loose, can be as entertaining as the “fight”.
