I was just checking "Who's Online" and found right there among the guests a nickname "Google Spider." The strange thing is that it doesn't seem to be a Sabla nick name. Anyone has any idea what this is?

Those things scan the site for google search results. Or something like that. We have lots of other spiders too; like Ask Jeeves.

I'm just glad they aren't cockroaches. :p

Like Eny said it's just what the name implies.

Google has a program ... well many ... that constantly crawl websites on the net gathering information about websites. The "spider" gathers this information then brings it back to google where they use this info and constantly changing complex algorithms to catagorize, rank and update their index of websites on the net.

If some one does not want their web in googles index the need to add meta tags in the head section.

<meta name="robots" content="index"> to get indexed
<meta name="robots" content="noindex"> to not get indexed

Or you can use a robot.txt file in your root directory to tell google what pages or directories to index and what pages or directories to not index.

I remember 1st time ever C-ing Google Spider in a form was like 3 years back, when I was an admin in an Arabic Forum, At the begining I thought it was a hacker or perhaps a virus, freaked out, LoLz, but in the end, I found out its nothing but some search technique from Google, that's how U end up having all the info n search results.
