View Full Version : Gaining weight[Problem]!
Sallam,
The below is an article stating reasons behind gaining weight:
===================
Reasons cited for gaining weight (Andrew Irving Associates, 1997)
General public
Predictably, people cited overeating and drinking as the main culprits. The reasons behind this, though, were complex and interesting:
*boredom
*depression
*comfort
*constant availability of food (including convenience foods)
*bad eating habits
*eating at the wrong time
*always finishing all the food on the plate
*rewarding behaviour with sweet treats, and nurturing through food
snacking
*eating the wrong foods
*finishing children's leftover food from their plates
*'healthy' food is more expensive
Lack of exercise was also cited, with the reasons behind it including:
*laziness/too tired after work
*sedentary jobs
*sedentary leisure activities (eg, watching television, computer games)
*use of cars rather than walking
*unable to exercise because of injury, or just too big
*prohibitive cost of health clubs/exercise classes
*being housebound
*Health professionals
They gave broadly similar reasons for the prevalence of overweight as the general public, but also cited other reasons:
*poverty
*poor nutrition education
*poor literacy
*poor labelling of products by both manufacturers and supermarkets
*lack of availability of fruit and vegetables in some (particularly urban) areas
*lack of traditional cooking skills
Thanks for sharing with us this article Solafa :)
Sallam,
Thank you sis Rosy for your reply:)
===========================
But the aim of my thread was to present my problem along with the information provided by the article.
=======================================
I used to weight 11.6 stones (70kg) and I was able to lose it to get to 9.6 stones (58kg) in a period of time. By following healthy food programme set it by my self alongside with practising some sport such as swimming, gym, jogging and walking around the street to get home instead of using a transport.
I was able to manage all of the above when I was student as well as working in part time jobs.
But since I started working in a full time position as an Engineer and I am no longer a student, I started gaining weight. I work from 9am in the morning upto 6-9pm at the evening; I have only 45 minutes break within the hours. Sometimes I can’t take all the lunch break time minutes as will the demand of finishing up things.
I can’t have breakfast in the morning because I don’t want to be late to be at work, and I can not wake up early just to have breakfast!
So when I am at work I either grab a croissant on my way and have it with my cup of tea or not eat any thing until when it is lunch break or not have nay thing at all the whole day till when I get home.
With my squeezed time that I have for my self, I hardly manage to do any exercise apart of walking back home, that’s only if the weather is nice! By the time I get home I only fall asleep.
So I tried to eat healthy instead and depend on the food to lose weight, but unfortunately it is not working :( I have gained about 10.8stones (65kg) :angry: :XD:
I try to eat healthy sandwiches with some fresh juice and 1 or 2 fruit a day [sometimes]. I have been on this programme for the last 2 months yet no sign of loosing weight apart of gaining. :cry:
I really need to lose weight as I feel am heavy and I am not more fitting my own cloth :weep: :depress:
==============================
So Doctors and Nutrition,
I need your advice/help in how can I lose weight with my kiosk routine [work routine]! :help: :bomb: :shy:
=============
P.S. : I hate food routine, i.e. I hate to follow a certain food programme because I feel bored so quickly! :shut:
I read your first article and I have to disagree with it. I do most of the things stated there and yet I do not gain too much overweight.
sallam Abs,
you are right, Even me i dont agree with every thing mentioned in there.
Cause not every one is the same, sometimes it works the opposite with some others people and gives a different results tahn what is expected to come out with. :)

You probably have a fast metabolism Abs. I'm like that as well (alhamulilah), I can loose what I gain in a month in two days.
marshmallowhut 01-06-05, 05:13 PM Well..I'm no nutritionist..but I think maybe you just have to find some time to do some exercise.. I guess as you grow older, your metabolic rate decreases and you tend to put on weight more easily and it gets more difficult to lose it. But I'm sure that with enough exercise, since u're already watching ur diet, u'll be able to lose weight :)

sallam,
I have always been a person who can gain easly but not losing it in the same way~:(
The truth i have not tiem for any exercise, my time is packed. I have been thinking for the last 6 months to join the gym but with no luck in finding the time to do so :yell:
I work 7 days a week in 2 jobs. I am lucky that i have at least few hours to sleep before the tiem to wake up! :os
I have some equipment at home for the stomach pressings and weight carryer but no TIME>>>>>>> :weep:
Arabian Prince 02-06-05, 07:23 PM Hey I never knew stones (weight measuring unit) were so light.. :p
Well thanks Solafa for sharing such informative info as usual :)
Just as Abs and Enigma had pointed out, its pretty much the same with me (el-7amdulillah). But alot of it is true by the way, as I have come across the same info on other occasions as well, and the repetitiveness of the same info has led me to believe that it trustworthy indeed. Those same symptoms/reasons that lead to obesity also lead to many other diseases by the way. :os
I'd like to bring to your attention the BMI (Body Mass Index) which is the best 'rough' guide that you could possibly rely on. Basically it depends on your gender, height, bodyweight and age. It gives you a quick picture of where you stand on the scale according to your calculated BMI...
I'm assuming you've come across this before, since you mentioned you've been on a healthy eating programme. However, I'd also like to point out that you might just get the impression that you are overweight. You could possibly be within the normal weight range, but simply unaware of it :)
There is actually nothing 'threatening' about gaining or losing weight. Its natural depending on our lifestyles and everything affecting it... Its the 'rapid' weightgain/loss that one should be worried about sometimes. :os
Arabian Prince 02-06-05, 07:40 PM Oh and one more thing.. I'm no doctor! :D
But I'd confidently say that you could depend on everything I've said, or am about to say due to loads of reading I've done and the experience I have gone through myself. :) Its your call in the end though :rolleyes:
I work 7 days a week in 2 jobs. I am lucky that i have at least few hours to sleep before the tiem to wake up!
According to this, and other info you have provided, it does seem that you lead a hectic lifestyle. Nutrition is the key here when it comes down to weight control...
Since your case seems like an extremity, I would recommend you to consider any of the following...
- MRP (Meal Replacement Powders): I know they might sound like something you have in space, but they're not all that bad. There are millions to choose from according to your needs and aim. Basically the name speaks for itself... they are a much more time efficient way to replace vital meals throughout the day.
- Multi-vitamins and minerals: (Usually in pill or capsule form) They provide you with your daily recommended intake and more! :) Never underestimate them (vitamins and minerals in general)! Most of them are responsible for healthy bodily functions, one of which is metabolism! :)
- Snack bars: ...you know.. snack bars! :p .. Granola.. kellogs.. anything! They are a quick tasty snack that refuels you with energy in between meals.
Now anyone reading this could go all anti-supplement on me, and state how they barely even work and are not readily absorbed/accepted by the body. My answer to that is, some of the fore-mentioned products are produced by some quite good nutritional companies. Each serving may contain more than the daily recommended intake in order to bypass indigestion by the body, hence providing the body with the required amounts, equally as good as natural foods.
Ofcourse non of this is or should be a substitute to natural healthy food, but they are often needed in certain cases, just like yours Solafa! :)
I hope I've provided you with any related info :)
malak84 02-06-05, 11:30 PM what a scary thread :hehe:
TripleTee 03-06-05, 12:11 AM woohoo AP... way to go! :D... seems like u've been on a diet before :p...unless it's just general knowledge, then that's impressive... I've a few things to add... BMI is quite familiar to me and many other ways of watching over ur body are available if the other doesn't work... but that u have to determine according to the kind of person u are...namely, ur BMI... whether u're an apple (most of the mass concentrated on the upper body-usually applies to men-) or a pear (most of the mass concentrated on the lower body-usually applies to women)... however sometimes -though very rarely- a woman might be an apple... never heard of a man being a pear but who knows... anyways.... the types of healthy diets u have the choice of are:
-Dr. Atkins.... sure u guys know him.
-Carbohydrate -protein diet: meaning never eat them together... but seperate.
-Calories... there's a certain way of counting how many calories u use up a day, regardless of what u do... meaning average. If u eat to that limit, ur weight wont change, if u eat over the limit u'll gain weight and vise versa.
Those are the common ones... another diet is according to ur bloodtype... what u eat that's good for u could be poisonous to others... eat what matches ur blood type is what it says. Other more detailed info I could give if requested... otherwise this is the general statement.
Arabian Prince 03-06-05, 11:29 AM :D Thanks TripleTee... I didn't expect anyone to be even half as enthusiastic over this for any reason whatsoever! lol
Well no.. I havn't been on a diet.. or you may could consider it as one, but if you are reffering to a weight-loss diet then I've never been on one, and hopefully (inshallah) I won't ever have to go on one :) (I love food :) )
If you were to call it a diet, then it would be non-other than a weightgain diet :) (started off believing any kind of weight put on would be good enough, ended up 'knowing' pure muscle mass was the only way to go about it :) ) I was so driven and determined to put on weight (mashallah) that I had incorprated it into my lifestyle, and it doesn't seem like I have to go out of the way of things anymore. Dramatic changes over quite some time (el-7amdulillah) :)
Well thanks for posting all the beneficial information, however I do think it'll be more of a hassle to Solafa to be restricted to any of these diets given the hectic lifestyle or daily routine she has mentioned... don't you think?!
Good info nevertheless :)
Arabian Prince 03-06-05, 11:35 AM ...........Having read through all this wonderful info that has been provided... I'd like to say one more thing... DON'T even bother to start thinking about taking any of this into consideration if you don't think you are determined enough to go through with it all the way...
Basically if you know you can't or even won't go through with it to the end.. then I'd urge you to rethink it over and probably not even start at all.. it is NOT of any benefit at all if you are to "give it a try" these things need time, sacrifice.. and above all need a strong will!
I have seen for myself, many people waste their precious time, money and other things and seem to be very dedicated at first... they see no results in a week.. maybe even a month so they let it all go...
NON of it is MAGIC!
(Hmmm :) .. I feel relieved now! I just had to let that out! :D )
TripleTee 03-06-05, 11:48 AM Sheesh people... didn't see the life outline there!... hmmmmmm.... ok Solafa.. there are many ways to cure that ONLY if u have the will power ;);)... if so then I can guide u to a routine I never followed :p... I'm no nutrition or doctor though...
if I'm gettin this right.... u can eat healthily... but healthy food is not always slimming my dear... it's the ones with little calories or less fat that u need... however... from a friend I know... she's been told that she should eat the most for breakfast cuz then u wont be that hungry for the rest of the day... so I guess u should find a way to do that... cuz 1st breakfast is important...2nd u won't feel weak or hungry that much for the rest of the day...
TripleTee 03-06-05, 11:50 AM Loool... true AP... absolutely :D... somethin I never wish to learn... but will power is essential... ight Solafa?? :D
sALLAM,
Sorry for taking long tiem to reply in this thread as i was waiting for more replies and at least a Nutri. or a Doc. to reply in here, but it does not seem to be a problem to them. :think:
=====
Any way,
A big and many thanks to Arabian Prince and TOTAT, for your information:) glad to read them through.
>>>>>>>>>>>BUT<<<<<<<<<
Arabian Prince, The truth i am always against taking pils to reduce weight, as i dont gurnatee them alot, and i am not ready to take them at this moment, for am terified from their side effects, i know i might sound freky but its true, plus i hate taking pils for it is a boring task to do everyday.[i keep on skipping my own Iron pills every day] :shut:
TOTAT, Well thank you for providing us with the official programmes of diet. Yet i hate to follow a certain diet as i have mentioned in my previous reply, because i get bored very quickly and i would feel restricted to certain food that i might not even be in amood to have them on that time.!!!!! i am wierd :mmhmm:

-After every thing is be done , then prepare my stuff for monday to be back to work, and sleep!
=========================
This is m daily routin.
So you could see that i haven' got enough time to set my self to any kind of sport, or even a small exercise at home. :(
My body depends on what i am eating before sleeping and thats it......... :(
dear solafa,
Don't take weight seriously. Weight is the sum of all tissue in ur body= Brain+ muscles, bones+ organs + Fat + body fluids and water. W
Remember weight is different from obesity. There are people who are 100 kgs but not obese and there will be others who are 50 kgs but obese.
it all depends on ur age, sex and other parameters.
My advice before you start any diet or excercise, is to know whether u are obese or not. Measure your BMI , waist and hip circumference and Skinfold thickness.
You might be in a normal range.
Meanwhile, i will try to look for the calorie chart which will help u to calculate how much energy you take per day and how much lose out of it. This will help you to manage the increase in weight.
TripleTee 11-06-05, 11:03 AM Solafa dear.... here's how u count how many calories u use a day...
BMR (Basal Metabolic Rate)
Multiply ur weight in kilograms by 24 (to get ur weight in kg multiply pounds by 0.46)
Ex. a person weighing 64 kg
64x24=1536
However, if u are over 20 u must make some adjustments to the calculations. for each decade over 20 substract 2%.
Ex. a person in his 30s weighing 64kg
64x24=1536
2% of 1536 = 31
1536-31= 1505
therefores the answer is 1505......... I hope the calculations are right... but that's the idea.
The amount of calories used (determined by this method) gives u the amount u use up without doing any exercises or such things... eat over the limit and u gain weight... eat below the limit and u lose... eat upto the limit, nothing changes. ight ;)
Trple Tee... that was a good reply
TripleTee 12-06-05, 10:24 PM Thnx Fahad... was just fascinated by this info... despite me hating to count calories... but I think it's a method Solafa can follow regardless of her schedule... as long as she knows how many calories is in what she eats..:p

sallam Doctor,
apology for taking tiem to reply you in here, and thank your for your comment[in the small box] :)
Well, the truth i never took weight as that seriouse in the past but recently i had to take a step to lose some and meanwhile as i am gaining it is worrying me:(
Just forgot to mention that i am a bone structured person, which means my bones are havier than every thing else in my body. :mmhmm:
I have check 3 BMI 's in different place one says i am fine and other says needs to do some exercise and a third one said that i really need to work hard to lose weight :weep:
Plus are BMI's all trustifullllllll!?????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!

Sallam dear,
Thank you for the effort of providing this method to me, it sounds a reasonable way of calculating the calories used.....
But how would i know the calories in the fruit for example?
thanks again appreciated:)
TripleTee 16-06-05, 10:57 PM ....good u asked me that Solafa :)... I was wondering b4, but then i figured out a chart full of types of foods and the calories they contain... to know which fruit contains what calories one always has to get back to that chart... most of the products in markets give info in the packet about how many calories it contains... but generally an example of what the chart says is:
Kiwi 100g =49 cal
Mango 100g
raw flesh only=57 cal
canned in syrup=77 cal
Orange 1 small=55 cal
Papaya,fresh 100g= 27 cal
peaches 100g
raw=33 cal
canned in natural juice=39 cal
canned in syrup=55 cal
Well... those are just a few examples... the whole chart is from A-Z... quite long... I guess u'll need to follow it up exactly to know the amount of calories u consume during the day... which is exactly why I said it's a tiring process... but quite easy when u know it...
sallam,
thanks TOTAT, for the above information!:)
i have done some search and i found a list of fruits, vegetables, breads,...etc of calories content in each!
thank you again.:)
well done Triple tee... i will would to refer every person asking about calories to you.. I have a very detailed nutritional guidlines which i hate to read.
Solafa , regarding BMI. BMI is widely used to define obesity However itis not a good indicator for risks associated with obesity like diabetes and cardiovascular disease..
Visceral fat (intra-abdominal fat) are the more risky not the fat beneath the skin.. this is why waist was found to be better correlated with risks.
