Oh that sounds like so much fun! You Cardiff students are so lucky.
Blue_Chi 24-04-05, 04:01 PM There are around a 100 Omani students in Cardiff this year, with a number this big there are always some people that would drive the group to start some sort of activity or another. We had a national day celebration and some other events as well, you can check our website at http://www.omanistudents.co.uk .
(Am I advertising for the Omani Society or what? :P)
Pineapple Thief 24-04-05, 05:38 PM Damn, 100...including me, theres three - yes, three - omani students in my uni this year...3/20,000...not a high percentage.
Oh, and the other two are both graduating this year.
Blue_Chi 24-04-05, 05:55 PM Actually, in my university there are only around 20, the majority of the students are other universities in the city. I actually never ever see any of the Omani nation except when something happens. (except for two guys that I actually hang out with occasionaly when we go out.)
I am the only omani here so far..and to make things worse the only Arab girl in my uni
Pineapple Thief 24-04-05, 08:03 PM Wow, thats tough...theres a few arabs in my uni, they are around, but most are 40 year old postgrads...theres very few undergrad arabs, and about 2 undergrad arab girls (i know one, one LOOKS arab :os)
Blue_Chi 24-04-05, 08:40 PM I have a small number of Arabs in my course, but I only talk to the khaleeji's of them, that's one girl and one guy. The guy is actually half Arab half British, and he started to ignore me so badly when he discovered that I don't drink. *crazy* The girl and I are good friends. At times I wish I had at least one Arab guy that I can hang around with, but most of the time I feel lucky that I don't know any Arabs in my course.
Anyway, who is coming to Cardiff's Omani Exhibition? (Which is not going to be held at Cardiff University anyway?)
Blossom 24-04-05, 09:52 PM Oh that sounds like so much fun! You Cardiff students are so lucky.
FUN!
i am not sure if this going to be fun but i am going to check it out.
Pineapple Thief 24-04-05, 09:59 PM Too far away..
How can an Exhibition be held at a Restaurant? gosh.. you people need any excuse to just eat.
Blue_Chi 24-04-05, 10:18 PM NaBHaN, nobody would come if food was not mentioned, :P, and I actually forgot to mention that we are also displaying Omani food in the exhibition! :P
Blossom, it will have to be fun, at the worst situations you can still laugh at how the Omani people can make fools of themselves. :P (That wasn't very optimistic, was it?)
PT, well at least you considered, we will keep you updated with the latest events of the exhibition.
Some members of the society have gone today to get some more articles and stuff to display in the exhibitions from places such as Sheffield, Leads and Manchester. Originally nobody wanted to give any of their stuff to anybody else, but the Cultural Attache' left some stuff at Sheffield, so we are taking those, and the guys at leads felt bad or maybe felt embarrased after one guy complained online about how nobody is willing to help. Anyway, we are finally getting some stuff, although I personally thought what we have already is enough anyway.
Pineapple Thief 24-04-05, 10:46 PM Good luck with it all and yeah definitely let us know how it goes :) Get pics and stuff

Blue_Chi 25-04-05, 01:32 AM No, but I believe that it is going to fun and you guys should attend it if you can! ;)

Blue_Chi 25-04-05, 02:47 AM Blossom was complaining earlier about not having anything to do there, so if Paradise Babe and her gang do come then I think we should ask Blossom to take care of them as she is also a member of the Omani Society in Cardiff.
Lady Blossom, we seek your assistace to the honourable ladies of Portsmouth during their visit to our great territoy.
*Okay, maybe I should cool down...*

Blue_Chi 25-04-05, 02:59 AM Blossom has already been allocated to a job, I think that I would ask one of the scary old Omani men with massive beards to take you on a tour instead, they would love to.

Blue_Chi 25-04-05, 03:10 AM Paradise Babe, you should experience the grace of our great hospitality; Cardiff awaits you.
PT, no comment.
Well yeah the similar thing I guess the Oman Student Society of Victoria tried to do in Melbourne, Australia in Victoria University, but I don't know then what happend, the president of the OSSV at that time he asked for some stuff to be sent from Oman and all that... But by then I left to Canberra, so don't really know much about it.
But I think it must have been successfull... most things that is related to culture and tradition in Australia especially in Melbourne is a success, because people welcome it pretty much, especially the International students and other Australians as well. So I assume it would have been a successful event. I'm not sure though!
Arabian Princess 25-04-05, 09:07 PM I love exhibitions about Oman, I've patricipated on them each year during uni days.
having food exhibited is a good idea .. people do enjoy that .. and dont forget the coffee and the dates ;)
Blue_Chi 25-04-05, 09:18 PM Members of the Omani Society today hanged various posters all around UWIC university to inform the public about the exhibition. The Society has also acquired extra articles and goods from the Socities of Sheffield, Leads, and Manchester as well. The event is going to happen the day after tomorrow.
Pineapple Thief 26-04-05, 01:34 AM Food is always the biggest draw, in my (limited) experience :)

really? she is? since when?
And PT sheep can be found anywhere :p no need for toud guide..
Why a Wednesday afternoon?! I would have come otherwise...surely a weekend or at least an evening would have been better for peopl to visit!
Anyway, best of luck Blue, I hope it's a real success.
Btw Blue...checked out your Omani students' site: Very smart. Just oen correction for the "About Cardiff" section. The southern 16 counties of Ireland are the Republic of Ireland, a separate country. The northern six counties, also known as "Ulster" or "Northern Ireland", make up the fourth part of the UK with England, Scotland and Wales. Hence the country's proper name "The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland". Sorry to nit-pick!
Is other Gulf States conducting such events as well? Or is it just the Omanis alone most of the time?
Blue_Chi 26-04-05, 07:40 PM Thanks on pointing that out mimo, I'll see if I can correct that sometime.
Amir, in Cardiff, the most active Khaleeji societies are the Omani and Saudi, other countries don't even have proper socities. On the UK level, I am sure that the Emarati and Kuwaiti Students' Unions are very active.
We finally managed to get some mannequins today to display some Omani constumes, a friend of mine and I had to go through out all the shopes in town without getting anything when finally we got a call saying that they found some at the Arts and Design School of UWIC.
Blossom 28-04-05, 12:42 PM i admit it was fun! its been ages since i laughed this hard ...

I finally bring you the first official OEC (Omani Exhibition in Cardiff) report, this report is exclusive to English Sabla, the OEC was held at the Celtic Suit Restaurant at the UWIC campus in Colchester Avenue on the 27th of April 2005. A variety of Omani clothes, jewlery, pottery, food, and information guides, videos, and photographs were on display through out the venue. Members of the Omani Society supplied most of the articles themselves while some of neighbouring Omani Society contributes by some of their articles as well.

The Omani Society advertised for the event by hanging up posters all through out all the campuses of UWIC, and this reflected in the great number of visitors that came to learn more about the Omani culture (and probably to have some free food and Arabic coffee).
The most important feature of the event was, of course, the Omani Dress Photography stall, where visitors had the opportunity to try on Omani clothes and jewlery and then take a photograph in an Omani scene, the photographs were instantly printed out for the visitors for free.
http://www.oman3d.com/temp/card_temp/1.jpg
Professional Omani fashion experts dressed up the visitors and guided them into how to pause perfectly for the memorable photo.
http://www.oman3d.com/temp/card_temp/2.jpg
There were more than one dress, it should be noted that the small coffee cup you see laying on the floor was brought by Blue_Chi.
http://www.oman3d.com/temp/card_temp/6.jpg
Some visitors also added their own unique touch to the atmosphere by pausing in more ... unique pauses.
http://www.oman3d.com/temp/card_temp/8.jpg
Some other visitors were very violent and actually cut the head of their partners. It was very sad, but she insisted on taking the photo anyway.
http://www.oman3d.com/temp/card_temp/15.jpg
Many Omanis were convinced that she came from 6aqa. (A town in the South of Oman)
http://www.oman3d.com/temp/card_temp/13.jpg
Some visitors clearly came for no other reason but the food, it was even caught on camera.
http://www.oman3d.com/temp/card_temp/12.jpg
I would like to thank the Omani Society for their hospitatliy, a friend of mine also had a tattoo the other day, but she did not mention anything about a stinky smell.
http://www.oman3d.com/temp/card_temp/10.jpg
The Guest of Honour and his escorts, I do not know which one of these he is.
http://www.oman3d.com/temp/card_temp/16.jpg
In conclusion, the Omani Society had so much fun during the exhibition, the Omani people were obviously very glad to represent their country abroad, but most of the entertainment was actually generated while making fun of all the visitors that didn't know anything of what was happening!
